  • I had a vision in my head for a specific photograph, and focused so hard on the end result, I fought against my own creative process. Lessons were learned and wisdom was gained.

David's Stupid ? of the day. I'm assuming at some point in your career you've shot with Cokin filters which means NDs are interchangeable. Did you make a conscious decision to go to dedicated filter sizes and if so why? Asking as I have Cokin today... and am looking to get some NDs (I have 1 dedicated size).

Honestly, I only recently (within the last couple of years) discovered the "filter holder" type of filter system. When I had my studio open, I very rarely photographed outside of my studio, and for the work I was doing, I had very little use for filters of any kind. All of the pro Master filters I have were acquired this summer. All the rest were gathered here and there and by happenstance. Even when I was in college, I rarely did work outside of the studio and infrequently used filters. Even the long exposure stuff I did, I kept to night time hours to avoid the expense of filters (I was broke in college). I am looking at replacing my filter system, but at this point it is an expense I cannot yet justify, and I know better than to buy shit for myself this close to Christmas.

I have some Cokin Holders a couple of filters but am now playing with FOTGA (Amazon). Bought some rings for my Fuji lenses (XT30) and a 16ND Filter. I’m sure it’s not as ‘strong’ as a good one from say B&H but it’s also about a third of the price.
