    Just found this video, interesting as the 4025 has been my go to X/Y field mic for several years now. I also use the 4029 M/S shotgun on occasion. Both are very good for the money. I use the same Rycote pistol mount and BBG windscreen as you. I flipped the rubber friction mount in the BBG around 180 deg to give a bit more room inside the BBG so the front of the 4025 has a little more air space. I noticed you had the mic in the mount backwards (according the the arrow on the mount) but maybe you did that to make the mic stick out farther. I also noticed you had the K-Tek internal boom cable plugged onto the stereo mic. Did you re-wire the boom with 5-pin XLR connectors and cable for stereo or did you buy it that way? This video is two years old and you have moved on to the Schoeps DMS system but for $649 it is hard to the beat the sound you got from the 4025.

    Hey, amazing video, I have a question though. Would a stereo mic like this one be good for doing doc-like work, travel video, shooting out in your environment. I make a lot of videos where I’m outside and I’d like to record things like the waves, trees bristling in the wind, people walking etc, and I’m confused whether I should use an stereo mic like this or a standard shotgun on-camera.
    Would love your advice and recommendations.

After watching this I feel that I have so much to learn now haha,,not sure if I can afford that with a zoom f6 though. I need to start off slowly and work my way into it. Any other vids on your channel for beginners recording nature sounds, waves, river, creeks, birds things like that?
    Thanks again

    Hi Marcel. I love the 4025, it's a great microphone. I was just wondering about your experience with the Rycote BBG. I have bought 2, in the correct size which is 21mm, but I found the fit of the grommet so tight that the first bbg broke while I was putting it on the microphone, and the second one was also extremely tight and I had to return it. Did you use the 21mm or did you go for the larger 22mm size? Thanks

    This is a very compact solution for ambience recording. Though the stereo width is lesser comparing to omni spaced pair but it is most compact setup and great for portable. I`d love to buy this microphone someday

    Thank you for posting this review and recording tests! Did you put the Rycote BBG and windjammer on at the same time along with the foam? Is there any difference in quality if one those elements is removed on a windless day? thank you!

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jeff! Yes in this video I had the foam on the microphone too. If there is no wind I recommend not using the windjammer. The foam and the BBG are enough. Friends told me that, if I use the Cinela Albert together with the wind protection I loose quality in the low ends. I assume that could happen with this setup too.

    Your channel is such a treasure trove of inspiration. Question for you: Do you use the hand clap to sync your videos or are you using an external device, like a Deity TC-1 for timecode? I've invested in the Deity system and hope it turns out to be a wise choice. I do some multi camera video, which is the main reason for the timecode system but, have played with feeding one of the TC-1s into my X8.

    • @FreeToUseSounds

    Hi! Thanks for the nice video! About the Rycote BBG. Is it the 25mm or the 21mm version? And does the end of the mic touch the top part of the BBG? I just bought the 25mm and was surprised that it was so small and cramped and I see that you can even fit the audio-technica windprotection foam on the mic as well.

  • @alantuttphotography

    I'm often surprised how much I enjoy ambient recordings. As you say, they're quite relaxing. How would you compare the recordings you get with this mic to an ORTF setup with 2 separate mics? I'm considering this or a pair of Rode NT5s.

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  3 роки тому +5

      Hi Alan. Of course the ORTF with the Sennheiser 8040 I use is another world. The sound field feels more natural to my ears. When I had AB setups I used USI Pro or DPA omnis what what great so I wonder how 8050 would sound like in a ln ORTF angle. Not sure how the NT5 would sound like but I assume these are a nice pair.

    Thanks again for this review..you've certainly put this mic on my radar! Do you think this would work on a boom pole for sit down interviews as well...above the talent...or would you also need a dedicated shotgun for something like that? Thanks!

    • @FreeToUseSounds

    Hi there sounds great 😊 Looking for a mic set. So Just one question. Does this mic do better as a standalone mic for ambience recording or would a pair do even better for stereo listening experience. Like the DPA’s or a pair of MKH’s?

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! It's a great microphone, but to find out which stereo microphone kit you like, you need to understand the difference between the different recording techniques. This microphone is XY, but there are also ORTF, NOS, A-B, MS, DMS, Blumlein and binaural stereo. So, knowing this, you need to know which microphones are made for the recording technique of your choice. Then you need to learn more about the characteristics (polar pattern) of the microphones . When you know all of this, you will know which microphone is best for you.

    Love your channel! I have been using the Zoom H4n Pro to record ambient sound fx for short films and recently I have noticed when the gain is turned up high their is a lot of pre-amp hiss introduced into my recordings. I'm thinking of getting an external x-y mic such as the BP4025 and running that through a Cloud Lifter to get super clean recordings.
    Do you use 1 XLR input into your zoom device from the BP4025 to get stereo recordings?
    I'm trying to find out to use 1 of the inputs on the Zoom H4N to record stereo via an external mic but can't seem to find an answer. I'm now doubting it has the capabilities and may look into investing in a Zoom F6 or H8.
    Keep the videos coming!

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Jamie! Yes, that can happen but has nothing really to do with the recorder itself. It's about operating the gain control in different environments. If you are in a quiet space like a forest or you record sounds in empty streets, don't force the sound to sound loud.
      Always listen with your ears first, put on your headphones, and adjust the gain until you hear the hiss. Then lower it until it disappears and start recording.
      Not sure if you can find a 5 pin XLR cloud filter. The AT 4025 is a stereo microphone with a 5 pin XLR. That means you have a 5 pin connection on the microphone and the cable splits into a 3 pin XLR left and right. The 5 pin XLR cable is included if you buy the 4025 and that saves you some money. I do prefer Mogami cold because lower quality cables can create noise as well.
      If you use one XLR input on the recorder you get a mono signal.

  • @Outrid3rs

    Amazing vid, just subscribed. I have kind of a noob question - you have Both a foam windscreen and the fluffy Rycote wind screen. I realize you want them to reduce wind noise and protection, but wouldn't it actually sound better without either one? Bare mic direct recording without any filters?

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, Mike! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing!
      While it's true that using a bare microphone without any filters might seem like it would provide a clearer sound, in reality, wind can significantly distort audio recordings. Many microphones on their own don't have built-in protection against wind. Without a foam windscreen or a fluffy windscreen, strong wind can not only distort the sound but also potentially damage the microphone's membranes. Additionally, wind can carry dust and other particles that could get into the microphone and destroy it over time. Recording close to the sea with salt in the air and not using protective material is really not a good idea. :)
      So, these windscreens are essential for protecting the microphone and ensuring the best possible audio quality in various environments, especially outdoors.
      Hope that helps clarify!

      Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words and support! Regarding the 4025 microphone, it can be used indoors as well. While it might not perform exactly like a large diaphragm microphone when recording indoor, it's a versatile piece of equipment that should work decently for both indoor and field recordings. It's always nice to have specialized mics for different scenarios, but the 4025 can be a great all-rounder if you're looking for a single solution.

Just click on “search for microphone” and use AT835ST. For the cables you probably need to find somebody who can shorten this for you.

      Hi Barney, I do have the super blimp as well and yes it fits but the main issue is the weight of the AT 4025. The clips are not strong enough. So you would need some that are much stronger. 4 Clips wouldn't work because the mic is not long enough.

    Good Afternoon everyone! Does anyone have any ideas on what would be the best way to record audio of passing boats or cars that are at a distance? I currently use a mid level Sony shotgun mic on my pro Panasonic 4K video camera... but can't seem to get good clear audio levels when I film them. The distance varies of the cars and boats that I am filming... but typically I would estimate that they are anywhere from 20 to 100 yards away depending on the area where I am standing to record. I know that most shotguns are really only designed for maybe 20 feet or so... but there must be a way to record more distant sounds like this as when I watch television broadcasts of boat or car races... the passing sounds and the engines sound full, loud, and vibrant. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Bekah! Hmm the AT 4025 is a great microphone but I wouldn't compare it to the NT-SF1 because its just a different type of mic. You need to decide if you need four channel recordings (ambisonic) for your work or not. Of course with the NT-SF1 and the plugin you can create unique and different stereo files and you can create 5.1, 7.1 etc with it. It all sounds great but do you need it is the questions? Keep in mind for the AT 4025 you need extra wind protection and a good mount. Rycote has the BBG but also a different blimp. With the second option you are beyond $1100 and the NT-SF1 has everything included for $1000. I'm recording with the NT-SF1 currently almost every day around Denver and I like the quality. What I'm not really a fan of is the windjammer. Low winds is alright but for high winds its not very useful. I might get a Rycote Cyclon for it and solve the problem. Its not cheap and more weight.

    Grrr, now I want one... 😋
    I didn't known this particular mike: it seems sooo good! Fantastic specifications for sure: seems very valuable for this price, a real bargain.
    I own several microphones, corresponding to various uses, but no stereo one like this. The 120° axis of the capsules looks like a sort of mix between ORTF and XY stereophony : have you a feeling of hole in the center of the scenes you record or not at all?
    I used to record music representations of my children at the conservatory in ORTF mode with a cheap Behringer B5 cardioid pair (or Sennheiser ME-64 sometimes) and was very pleased with the results... But this set is not very practical for field recording. So I've acquired a Shure VP-88 for this use which I do love a lot: it's a very versatile tough M-S Mike which allows me to choose the size of my stereo field directly on the Mike (Small, Medium or Large) or later in post-processing with a perfect mono compatibility for radio use because of the cardioid center capsule. But it suffers of a very high self-noise level and mere dynamic, limiting its use for quiet ambiances... (Maybe I should try adding feat-head preamps?)
    So I recently bought a 2d hand Pearl MSH-10: another very expensive but high quality tiny M-S micro for stereo recording. Not ever used it but it should be wonderful for field recording... And I've found a 2d one I intend to use in double M-S mode to try some 5.1 recordings I could listen in my home cinema: it should be great if I succeed!
    I'd love to add the BP-4025 alongside to this one to compare the results nevertheless: 2 complementaries micro for stereo recordings. The Audio Technica is for sure a clear winner to avoid clipping, considering its 145 dB spl (and even 155 using the pad) plugged in the F6 and its dreaming 32 bits, but being able to choose your stereo size is such a great specification too... I just want them both! 😁
    Congrats for your job Marcel (and Libby of course), love to look at your videos. Keep going on man! You'll be welcome if you come near Toulouse (FR) 🥂

    Hello, I’m completely new at this. Thank you for this review. According to you does this ATechnica mic sound better than the build in stereo mic on a Zoom H6 for example to record light nature ambiance like soft stream of water, light breeze, birds... Since I just need to record from time to time for my own personal use, would you advise me to purchase this mic with a H6 or maybe it would work fine on a H4n? I just don’t about the preamps as well. Hope you can answer question. Thank you.

      Hi Sylvain. Thank you for your message and yes the AT 4025 is a huge improvement to the XY capsule but if you don't use it very often you have to decide if you want to spend that kind of money on it. It also works fine on the H4n if you have this recorder already.

      @@FreeToUseSounds Thank you very much for your answers. You're the best channel about field recording, honestly. Since I will mainly be capturing soft ambiance sound (nature mainly), I won't need a lot of bass for example. Great video and great sounding mic. In fact i ordered this mic after watching this video several times. I'm currently using an H4n Pro, but I can't get the results I want when it comes to recording ambience, so I'm looking to upgrade that as well. Either an F3, or if can stretch the budget further, an F6. From a relative beginner's perspective, which one would recommend? I might add that I have a Sennheiser MKE that i intend to use as well. Thanks for another awesome video.

      I was going to say F3 but then you mentioned the MKE and I definitely can think of scenarios where I'd like to plug in my MKE 600 and a 4025 (which I'm here to evaluate for purchase) simultaneously. I run an F8 and would probably trade it for an F6. Never know what additional gear you might want to add and plug in down the line.

  • @javieralejandro8144
    @javieralejandro8144 4 місяці тому

    This microphone has 14db of self noise, and I think it's just fine. I think many times they are trying to sell us the low noise retoric and most of the times it all has pros and cons, for instance this one holds up to 155db spl, 20db over the lewitt 540s. IMHO It's more important to have more dynamic range and avoid (at all cost) distortion at the mic level, because 32bits are not going to save your there. Further more, it's also important how to use the mic and capture the sound, than just take numbers like the noise floor if you, for instance, end up capturing loud sources. I think that even the 32bits are more important than the self noise of a condenser IMHO
