  • Life in the town and pre-Revolutionary house my family has occupied for many generations.
A memorial plaque at the port recalls the 2006 anti-NATO protests and riots which took place there amidst attempted joint NATO-Ukraine military exercises in Crimea.
This same port was the site of an attack against Russia's Black Sea Fleet by NATO Storm Shadow/SCALP EG cruise missiles in late 2023. Loitering munitions and rockets are shot down constantly, with some of the better stuff making it through or being intercepted right over the town. It is not legal to document this in-depth.
The residents of the town, in 2006, were Ukrainian citizens. They could not have foreseen that they would hold Russian passports in 8 years. This underscores the duration and complexity of this conflict - or perhaps its simplicity. Two distinct ideologies clashing under one government, with big players on either side having lots to gain.
