  • Well, this is a low quality and rambling video, but it does go through what I did to get switched power to the Garmin Zumo on my Harley. I used the spare wiring for the fender tip light.
I think the RS part number I used was 362-8869. It's called PCB connector, Female, crimp, 24-20AWG
General disclaimer: I know nothing about motorcycle electrics so you make your own judgement about what you should do.

When you're riding down the highway, can you actually hear the audio on the GPS telling you to turn right or turn left. I'd love to put a GPS on my 2009 road king classic. I have no USB or any of that kind of stuff. Just stock everything. Thanks. 👍🏽🤠 5/15/23

Re running the power down; The Zumo can be either removed or turned off via the power button and the Zumo will not run down your batter. Just put battery terminal connectors on the power supply cable and Bob's your uncle. While that was very cool, it was not necessary.

I know this is 7 years old but if you're still about, what did you do with the transformer box? Did it fit in behind the headlight?

Yes, it all went behind the headlight. Bit of a squeeze if I remember.

You didn't show the part where you connected the inverter to the rest of the circuit that's very important

Thanks for the info, I didn't spot the terminal part number in the video description, but got it now.I had a swift look behind the headlamp and the wiring is there, same as yours, so that it the way I'm going to go.What did you do with all of the spare cable that comes with the Garmin? With the 660 the cable is about a meter long and incorporates plugs for microphones and speakers which I wont be using as I will be pairing it up to my helmet via Bluetooth. Is there room inside the headlamp bezel to accommodate the surplus cable as I don't want to chop the harness length down?

+Jack Lee Yes, I just squashed it all up inside the headlamp. It fitted fairly easily as far as I remember.

Good find! I used #73153-96BK and 73191-96 and a motorcycle USB charger to power my phone.

Thanks very much for the excellent video. I've just got a Garmin Zumo 660 off Santy for my 15 Road King and i've been wondering which would be the best power source to use.I don't fancy taking the tank off to go from the battery, so the fender tip wiring seems like a good idea. Is there any way you could provide the part numbers for the connector and terminals from RS components? I've had a look, but there are loads of different types. Was there any reason why you decided not to use the accessory switch on the opposite side to the driving light switch ?

Thanks. I didn't use the accessory switch for 1 main reason. I already have a parade fan on that. I still could have done it, but didn't want the hassle of turning it on and off. You need to check if your bike has the wiring already in it. If so the plastic part is already there. The only part you need to buy is in the description of the video. Good luck.

Hi you gave the part nr for the pcb pins, what was the part nr for the plastic housing?

The plastic housing is already on the bike attached to the end of the wire for the fender tip light. Strange I know.

As an option to purchasing a Garmin GPS, you can take a hand-me-down cell phone and simply use the Google Maps spp; Even without a SIM card. The GPS portion of the phone still works, even without cellular service, and for free. Then dedicate the phone as your motorcycle GPS.

Thanks for your comment. That might work (you would need to install the maps offline first), but the whole point of these devices is that they are securely attached and waterproof. I have used a phone many times, but it isn't always up to the job.

Would be easier to "splice" the Garmin red/black wires directly to the Harley red/black wiring instead of buying the multi lock tang crimp connectors.
Also, the Road King has an accessory on/off switch. Can attach Garmin wires to the accessory switch to power the GPS.

Regarding wires - yes you could, I just decided to do it this way. Regarding accessory on/off switch, I thought about it, but I didn't want any chance that I would accidentally leave the gps on and draining the battery or vice versa.

MotorbikeStuff Should shut off GPS at same time you turn off the bike.
