Such sentiment has been growing in Russia for many years, since at least the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2021, a poll showed that 64% of Russian did not think of themselves as a European country, compared to only 29% who did. Imagine someone saying Algeria shouldnt be in Africa since they are Arabs.
