Ahh... Everquest! I played it for about 5 years, and no game in my 30 years of gaming can compare to it. It was a beautiful thing in so many ways. Hopefully Pantheon can live up to half of its glory.
wow...I am going to age myself but I started playing EQ when it was in beta. I still have my account and characters and log in every so often to chat with my guild friends even though I don't play anymore. What I miss the most is the camaraderie that was in that game.
I think the camaraderie comes from it being an earlier time in the internet. I don't think you'd be able to foster the same type of community now due to the hyperconnectivity we have. Back then you were required to co-operate more, had to communicate better and build relationships in order to play the game. Your whole focus was on the game and the people in front of you. Now you can just google the answers to questions and there will be countless walkthroughs on youtube for every MMO. Plus we are so used to communicating with other people online that the novelty is completely gone. Back in early EQ I never spoke to anyone online; I hadn't even joined chatrooms at that point. Now we communicate with people we know in real life online extensively you don't build the same deep relationships. I loved Everquest, I don't think you can ever recreate a game like it because it was such a product of its time.
I think it can be done. It's just that everyone is afraid to make a game again where, for instance, as is mentioned in this video, it can take you an hour to go from one city to another, and that is without dying. Part of the fun of the game was the parts that made it not fun. The dying, the travel times, the progression requirements, the challenge. Hell, I remember one of the selling points for me was reading on the kunark box about how long it took to cross the continent. They boasted about it on the box!
My favorite game ever. Especially in the beginning . The rules of play we're like no other and I still haven't seen a game that doesn't baby the players. There was ninja looting . Kill steals . Real level 1 twinkage . Wild wild west kind of world.
Tbh I almost gave up looking at this video and now that I finished it, I'd really like to try it out. It seems like the perfect fit for "Idk what to do" days. Also would like to see more content of Everquest from Cohh, since I can respect his opinions on things like these.
Man, this brings back memories! I was the character modeler from the original EQ up to Shadows of Luclin. Modeled, texture mapped, and rigged 99% of the characters. So glad people are still enjoying EQ after all these years!
Played it back in the days. It was an amazing game. Years later (3-4 years ago) I wanted to come back but was overwhelmed and overpowered with all the addons and stuff. I will never forget how I died at around Level 18. you lose ALL your equipment and a decent amount of HP. I didn't know that necromancers could summon your corpse. So I was looking for my corpse for about 4-5 hours, not finding it. And I really never found it. Was naked at Level 18 and started begging people to give me some stuff. The great community helped me out. And yes, Level 18 was a lot of time invested back then. A LOT. Very cool video! Keep it up. Would like to see more of it
Seriously need to do some Let's Play videos. I don't think Everquest gets the respect it deserves these days. It opened the door for every graphical MMO out there today and is MUCH more expansive than anyone could possibly imagine on the live servers.
Overall great video, especially for your audience who may not have played Everquest. I know this video was done with out a script as you were streaming, all in one take so please take the corrections with a grain of salt but just a few pieces of info were not exactly correct. 3:06 There are currently 23 expansions not 16. 9:03 Wizards can Quad kite starting at 27 after obtaining the bonds of force AE snare spell. soloing is definitely in their deck much like druids
Druids had it much safer though. You could kill 4 mobs at once as a wizard or you could die in about 3 seconds if one or more resisted your snare or got too close. And at 27 you're starting to get into "don't mess around" territory when it comes to soloing even 1 mob at a time.
While I've never played Everquest, everything in this video mirrors my feelings for another MMO, Ragnarok Online. It was a blast, despite being a grindfest. Never felt at home as much as while playing that game.
Man I played this game for 10 years; I raided as a Gnome Wizard on Tholuxe and then Bertox when servers moved. This game is my 'good ole days' of gaming. So incredible.
The Ranger non-comment literally made me LOL. That being said back in the day the best EQ player I knew played a Ranger. He was amazing and the best puller I knew. Over Monks. There is something to be said when one player can pull an entire zone to your camp spot and holding aggro while the group peeled mobs off. We just had to let him know when our target was close to death and he would bring the pack in, then the tank would taunt another mob while we killed off the first. We would do that for a few hours and everyone would get XP. When we were done we would just back out and zone. Nothing like the sight of a Ranger running a train to zone with everything in that zone in tow. Its a sight to behold. There is also something to be said about Necro/Shammy duo's. Mmmmm
EQ is my favorite MMO. I'm so glad they did the Agnarr server. It's so refreshing playing this game with an adult perspective. It's not nearly as hard or complicated as I thought it was as a kid, however, it's so much more fun now.
I appreciate the vids. I played on Ps2 (EQOA) so you probably see us as the lesser race, but this brings back alot of good memories. thank you and keep the vids coming!!!!
There are probably fewer polygons that make up all of the starting city than one character model in FFXIV. BTW, your love for EQ is what Final Fantasy XI is for me. That game feels like home, and over 15 years I've made more friends there than real life.
from 24:00 ish on.. hit it head on.. Everytime I play this game, I feel like I've come home. This game had an immersion no other game has matched for me. It's why I still look for an excuse to play 18 years later.
Wow that music...the nostalgia haaaa Dude I miss this game so much. I remember buying this in April 1999 when it first came out. The game was so punishing but rewarding, so amazing. Had a 55 Half Elf Druid...if you died you lost atleast 3-5 days worth of grinding like crazy to level.
I was running around agnarr server at like level 7 and was in a group at orc 2 with some people from the Ancient coalition and I asked to join. Little did I know I saw a person named Cohh type in guild chat. Send him a tell and he responded immediately as kind as ever confirming that it was actually in fact this Cohh. Good show I Grew up on EQ too played from 2000 all the way to 2006
Either a game I would play the heck out of, or a game I would get bored of instantly. 50/50 chance of either. I'll wait for Pantheon, and see how that goes.
Probably the biggest botch job of a class in MMO's that I can remember. Can't tank but given one of the best aggro spells in the game, a taunt button, and only chain armor, CHECK! Archery completely useless, CHECK! Worst hybrid spell choices by far, CHECK (thanks Droods)! Class specific endgame weapon that procs aggro roulette and gets party members killed, CHECK! I think it was a trap by the developers to punish people obsessed with Drzzt at the time.
The original UO is finally being remade by two former devs who worked on the franchise. It's in Alpha currently and will be coming out on Steam beta in 3 months. It'll have all the old school sandbox mechanics and feel of old Ultima online down to the smallest details. Full loot PvP, precasting, criminal system. When you die, you're a ghost, same skills and spells, weapons even the game commands 'bank, all follow me, same mobs. Player housing and dungeons in the open world with player-owned merchants, loot able house keys, and player run economy, tameable mounts included, no leveling, no classes. Blacksmith, fishing, tailoring, mining, lumberjack, lock picking, stealth, hide... Here's an in depth review. Also explains how to be a battle mage with halberd m.ua-cam.com/video/X94okE0Ma80/v-deo.html
Thanks for rekindling my love of EQ. Discovered your channel while looking for Pantheon vids. Now to download it! Downloaded, now am thinking of my class. Nec ans Mage still the go to for solo play? I don't have the time like I used to have, and need to take regular breaks, so I need someone that can solo.
Original EQ was what table top role players envisioned a video game into :D It was a slow, confusing, punishing, and no-fucks-given about your "convenience" game. And that made it glorious.
2:14 He shoulda probably added that there ARE more advanced models available. He's just chosen to turn them off for the original versions with basically no customisation. (Not that the new ones have alot, but at least hair, face, and eye colour each have their own scrollers)
Im going to check out Everquest while waiting for Pantheon. I tried it a couple of times before but was always put off by the dated graphics, animations and horrendous UI. But I think I'll stick to it this time
Remember this Cohh? It will always be the best and they can never take that away from us because it was an amazing magical time in 1999, never to be repeated. We're doomed to be always looking for that cherry pop.
Great trip down memory lane, thanks Cohh. I’ll never forget starting in Qeynos and accidentally finding the secret entrance to the Temple of Bertoxxulous... yikes!!
I keep trying to get into this, and this video will help me a lot. I really regret that I did not try it back in 2000 when I first saw it, but I was just sure I could not play it on my computer at the time and I had a 6 year old daughter, so I had to be sure about any computer games I spent money on.
Caught your stream this morning when I saw "CohhCarnage, 9100 viewers, Everquest." I just subbed to FFXIV to prepare for their new expansion and the glorious Red Mage master race, but I'm *incredibly* tempted to jump into this. I always wanted to play an Enchanter, and now seems like literally the best time to jump into EQ since WoW killed it. Also heard talk of Pantheon, which if it's a revival of the old-school design philosophy in MMOs, I'm in. I enjoy themeparks, but I feels like MMOs nowadays have forgotten that they're supposed to be other worlds you can immerse yourself in.
God I miss this game... I remember twinking out my rogue when I quit my twinked monk (lvled the monk to 49 and got bored of it) then moved it fungi tunic and other stuff to a rogue and sold some to buy more rogue gear.... rogue really kicked ass with fungi and other gear, .. dark elf was my race.. just the memories .. love it.
So much nostalgia. I logged into my level 62 Cleric the other day and it all felt so foreign...I quit shortly after PoP came out...I think it took me 3 months to get from level 60 to 62.
Damn that was a serious flashback, just seeing the character screen. I played EQ back in the early 2000's and it's definitely a different beast from the MMOs of today (both in a good and bad way). Thanks for the nostalgia trip. Though, to be fair Cohh, at the time in EQ you're playing on the progression sever, everyone would have hated you for being a halfling :D
If you mean about the halflings, it's been a while. I seem to remember when they 1st came out in EQ they were disliked because they didn't really have any downsides racially (most races had something). I also want to say they tended to be played by the more obnoxious players, but I could be wrong. There was probably something else, but old age and memory and all that.:D
Ahhhh, I watched some old gameplay from 2004 and I listened to someone talk about why they hated Halflings so much. Seems like they had a pretty good reason!
I started my MMO experience with WoW, and have always wondered about EQ. I like EQ2 (which I just started playing recently), but after this video I think I might want to look at EQ1 - Druid (because I usually solo play). Thanks for the info.
Wizards can solo quite well after bonds of force. Though you will need a means of running fast. If snare doesn't land. Though perhaps in vanilla or might be rough without j boots
Hi Cohh. A past friend used to play a game at work around 2006? Not really sure of the Date. Anyways it was definitely on the Computer and it had to do with gaining land, Armies,Castles, Invisible characters like Dragons I''m pretty sure.It was an International Competitive game. Any Help??
Yes, you can change all loot setups selections at any time. Take a look at the buttons on the bottom left of the AdvLoot window. You can edit just about everything there.
Not an mmo person but almost good enough an intro to get me to try it. I love RPGs but something about always being online only and eventually servers shutting down always turn me off MMOs. I like having a game collection that stays with me.
Thanks for the video. Finally someone convinced me to try the game. I'm gonna start out on Agnarr, and probably roll as a Bard or Enchanter. might not be the smartest choice for a beginner, but I love the ideas of the classes, so I'll just have to deal with it! :D
update; played all day and I'm a level 5 Enchanter and still have no clue what I'm doing. I love this. Also on Agnarr, if anyone wants to hit me up, my character's name is "Fenthern"!
also cohh I'll be joining agnarr next week and I'd like to start casually getting into guilds again, pantheon has gotten my mmo hype up. what's your guild info and how do I join?
do you have to do quest? to level up??? im the kinda person that likes to just explore on my 1st charter then make a nother charter later on and do quest and stuff/party a few months after lern how to play
Not at all. You get XP from killing things, so you can go from 1st level to max without ever picking up a quest. In fact despite the name, quests are a pretty small part of Everquest, the only ones that really matter is each class gets a high level 'epic quest' to get a special item for that class. That said, be careful if you want to just wander off exploring. Once you are out of the newbie zones there are a lot of things out there which will just one-shot you on sight if you get too close. It's an incredibly tense/fun experience, but always explore with caution.
Good explanation, but Enchanter is usually the highest DPS in the group because of pets especially on this server. A hasted pet will outdps wizards/mages/etc. You mentioned they are low DPS. Just thought I would mention since every enchanter has a charmed pet on this server. In raids, SK are actually the highest raid DPS if they are trying for the first 1-3 expansions because of the high damage of chain life taps and the lifetap disc and harm touch.
Can find Everquest Free To Play on steam or their web site. Coh's playing on the official servers, specifically on a progression server Agnar (it's behind a $15/mo pay wall to play on progression servers though)
You can play on Project 1999, a fan based private server. They do have a written agreement with Daybreak games, so it's legal and wont be shutdown. They do require you to own the game though if I remember correctly and they are currently up to the 2nd expansion, Velious. So if you don't want a monthly fee, that is an option, but you may need to buy the base game and expansions.
Mark Diesel P99 for someone that never played the original game can be hell. Most people that never played classic will be turned off due to it being much more challenging in terms XP gain for one. This is very similar to classic but you can have a job/family life and still achieve quite a bit in a short amount of time. No hell levels ! Maps ! Faster XP but still very rewarding among many many more convenience of life things.
P99 community is cancer though. It's where all the FoH and Uberguild wannabe tryhards from 20 years ago flocked to to start drama and piss at each other on the forum all day. I had enough when half the server got suspended for cheating a few years ago.
l played UO, then EQ came out, and l got hooked lol. l have great memories playing this game, and l still log in sometimes to check my old characters out :)
CohhCamage am I the only one having issues with new models to this game. Only way to describe the issue is when a a new model is wearing armor some times its flickering... first I thought it was my pc but it did it on 3 other pc's and 4 graphics cards...Cards I used to test was gtx 1060 750 750 and a 1050. I think its a direct X issue . Any ideas or just use older models?
Took me about a month, but I played 8-10 hours every day. I started at the first expansion (Kunark) but played the majority of it in the vanilla world.
Modern EQ doesn't have the same level grind as classic... Even the progression severs give ALOT more XP than classic... It took less than a week for most of the raid bosses to be downed on the new progression server, I'd say currently the XP grind is somewhere between Vanilla WoW and BC era for time to hit 50 cap.
james ross Played at server start and my played time was 2 days. if you are completely new you will look at a month at most probably less if you play 4 to 8 hours and actually group in good areas. I recommend just enjoying the journey though. The first time through is magic. Ive just been on every progression server so maxing a character fast is more beneficial to me.
After all that introduction of the classes, you still missed the king of buffs? Now I suggest you do another video and focus it on the Shaman (Jawz from Bertoxx says hi) :D
good intro!sometimes i miss those times...however, sadly you didnt pick bard and showed some mass song kiting and spell-weaving, which required some skill.and yea, running from qeynos/halas to freeport was a pain in the a with only strafe run and no bind affinity at highkeep... had to run all over again several times - but had fun.
Not enough to make me log in my raid Enchanter again..... though I admit I did a month ago to say high to the old folks that go way back to standing at North Fremont Bank for days trying to get enough good players to break into Fear.
Project 99 is a replica of the original game. Don't get me wrong I'll play 99 over wow ect.... But the old world rules is what really had the hardcore players . Imo
Even P99 dosnt come close to the original feeling and especially the community that old EQ had. And that is what made EQ so great is the community back then.
Ahh... Everquest! I played it for about 5 years, and no game in my 30 years of gaming can compare to it. It was a beautiful thing in so many ways. Hopefully Pantheon can live up to half of its glory.
My favorite part is he logs into the game, right into a Public discussion about Brad Mcquaid's coke addiction tanking Vanguard Saga of Heros.
I'm guessing that's how he died? Everyone is all hush, hush about cause of death.
Dude you should make more of these. Your commentary is the shizz and your quality is really good.
wow...I am going to age myself but I started playing EQ when it was in beta. I still have my account and characters and log in every so often to chat with my guild friends even though I don't play anymore. What I miss the most is the camaraderie that was in that game.

It really seems like a game where you can just chill while playing, something I could use after playing overwatch and for honor for a year
It's definitely a game you can play if you want to kill time. Everquest slaughters time.
Yup, I played 100 hours in the first week of getting the game and I'm not even kidding, I need help.
If you are gonna go play on P99 or something you can def sink time into this game. Especially when it can take days to get a couple levels.
You definitely will not know what to do when you star EQ lol
Man, this brings back memories! I was the character modeler from the original EQ up to Shadows of Luclin. Modeled, texture mapped, and rigged 99% of the characters. So glad people are still enjoying EQ after all these years!

Bet you returned to the game by now.. Everquest.. it stays with us
Overall great video, especially for your audience who may not have played Everquest.

Came here to see if there's a comment about that :)) not dissapointed :))
Probably the biggest botch job of a class in MMO's that I can remember.

Thank you Cohh for sharing these EQ flashbacks. So many good memories. Hope Pantheon keeps it old school like EQ.
Thanks for rekindling my love of EQ. Discovered your channel while looking for Pantheon vids. Now to download it!

Would you do a series?
he do
Hey CohhCarnage! Been following your coverage of Pantheon, and started back up on Agnarr, while we all wait for Pantheon. Anyway Subscribed !
Wizards can solo very well outdoors, quad kiting. That little instant clicky staff of Ro to pull with was awesome.
Hey. If at all possible can you do a video where you go in depth on the races and classes. Im not sure if you have yet.
Im going to check out Everquest while waiting for Pantheon. I tried it a couple of times before but was always put off by the dated graphics, animations and horrendous UI. But I think I'll stick to it this time

What a nostalgia trip. This game was my life about 18 years ago.
Saw you camping Bedroom in Lguk, cool to see somebody with a big following giving EQ some love!
Played EverCrack as CajunElf Bard on Cazic-Thule Server for many yrs, from Day 1 it was released. Loved Loved my Experience in that game
Whoot! I remember my ogress shadow knight. Great times sneaking around cities avoiding guards!
God I miss this game... I remember twinking out my rogue when I quit my twinked monk (lvled the monk to 49 and got bored of it) then moved it fungi tunic and other stuff to a rogue and sold some to buy more rogue gear....

Why?
If you mean about the halflings, it's been a while. I seem to remember when they 1st came out in EQ they were disliked because they didn't really have any downsides racially (most races had something). I also want to say they tended to be played by the more obnoxious players, but I could be wrong. There was probably something else, but old age and memory and all that.:D
Ahhhh, I watched some old gameplay from 2004 and I listened to someone talk about why they hated Halflings so much. Seems like they had a pretty good reason!
If you are ever bored, Cohh, I have some EverQuest playlists on my channel. Got one starting for my human druid on Agnarr.
Nice vid, i got totally overwhelmed playing without any guide.
I started my MMO experience with WoW, and have always wondered about EQ. I like EQ2 (which I just started playing recently), but after this video I think I might want to look at EQ1 - Druid (because I usually solo play). Thanks for the info.
Props for using the oldschool character models. So much better than the "improved" luclin models.
Wizards can solo quite well after bonds of force. Though you will need a means of running fast. If snare doesn't land. Though perhaps in vanilla or might be rough without j boots
It never lets me start in my home cities? Crescent is the only option. Wonder why.
Hi Cohh. A past friend used to play a game at work around 2006? Not really sure of the Date. Anyways it was definitely on the Computer and it had to do with gaining land, Armies,Castles, Invisible characters like Dragons I''m pretty sure.It was an International Competitive game. Any Help??
If I select the "always need" loot option. Is there a way to change it to "always greed" afterwards ?
Those are important in groups I suppose ?
Yes, you can change all loot setups selections at any time. Take a look at the buttons on the bottom left of the AdvLoot window. You can edit just about everything there.
oh hot damn. I'm on board for this ride!!!
you spelled "bored" wrong
Mike Rodriguez You're stupid, aren't you?
LOL
You guys have a guild on mangler accepting apps for new players? Returning tonight would be nice to have a guild to run around with.
Haven't you done videos for Pantheon?
I started in 99, ended in early 2000s is it possible to play now with the charector i played back then ?
Druid was my main in EQ. Kited the heck out of everything. Root, run, attack. Rinse repeat.
I played EQ for a very very long time. Have you checked out 'Project: Gorgon'? It is still in alpha, but has the same great feel of EQ. Loving it.
good times, EQ was my first mmorpg (in 3D), awesome video!
Not an mmo person but almost good enough an intro to get me to try it. I love RPGs but something about always being online only and eventually servers shutting down always turn me off MMOs. I like having a game collection that stays with me.
Hey, do you know why I can't see any shadows and bloom effects ? I do have all graphics set to high...
I played on Project 1999 for a little bit. It's a really good server. I hope pantheon can deliver on that old mmo feel that vanilla eq has.
Progression servers are not good servers for beginners I played on a progression server for my first server I did not know anything I stayed lvl 8
This video made me feel really good.
Did you just skip my favorite class, Shaman, when going through the classes, or was I just dozing off?
He didn't mention it cuz he was reading from the human list
Cleric is a great choice as groups are needed in this game. They are fun to solo with to boot.
What server are you playing on there is it a live server or is it EMU server?
What's up with Rangers? I'm new to this game and made one.
also cohh I'll be joining agnarr next week and I'd like to start casually getting into guilds again, pantheon has gotten my mmo hype up. what's your guild info and how do I join?
do you have to do quest? to level up??? im the kinda person that likes to just explore on my 1st charter then make a nother charter later on and do quest and stuff/party a few months after lern how to play
I wish you showed you were able to get the game installed and play it.
First played EverCrack in 99, never fully walked away.
Was subbed until a year or so ago almost constantly since just after launch. Half Elf Ranger was my main on Cazic Thule.
Looking forward to the Pantheon stream tomorrow. :)
I need this!! I was a huge EQ player and I'm in the nostalgic phase of life. Downloading on Steam. How do I find your guild?
Graphics looks awesome. Tried the game and love it but it is old school graphics. How do I change this?
Thanks for the video for us newbies.
l played UO, then EQ came out, and l got hooked lol. l have great memories playing this game, and l still log in sometimes to check my old characters out :)
By the way great video
as a ranger 20 years ago, this still hurt....however accurate
Just downloaded and got into the guild. This game is fun
Is this gonna be a series?
i downloaded it on steam. is it the same thing than you?
what would be the average leveling time from 1-50?
First time Character never played before? 2-3 months.
aricias I'd say longer than that. 6 months. you'll be learning all the way to level 50
Real threat of losing gear, lose XP when you die, TRAIN TO ZONE!!!!
Oh the memories
Is he still playing the game today?
Why did you skip Shaman?
How do I find your guild Cohh?
good intro!sometimes i miss those times...however, sadly you didnt pick bard and showed some mass song kiting and spell-weaving, which required some skill.and yea, running from qeynos/halas to freeport was a pain in the a with only strafe run and no bind affinity at highkeep... had to run all over again several times - but had fun.
just what i need tnaks mate
more videos pls on eq
Necromancer: the support class for the support class.
Not enough to make me log in my raid Enchanter again..... though I admit I did a month ago to say high to the old folks that go way back to standing at North Fremont Bank for days trying to get enough good players to break into Fear.
didn't watch the video, but it said Everquest, so thumbs up.
Can you still play this
Everquest isn't like any MMO I have played in the past? But I have literally played Everquest before.
project 1999 is the real everquest.
Project 99 is a replica of the original game. Don't get me wrong I'll play 99 over wow ect.... But the old world rules is what really had the hardcore players . Imo
While I wouldn't mind playing old style I love Luclin zones. So I'd hate posting a server without it
Even P99 dosnt come close to the original feeling and especially the community that old EQ had. And that is what made EQ so great is the community back then.
I agree it was painful I died so much I could not get to my corpse and it dissapeared then i could not get my loot again
