"Without question the most deplorable event in the history of American ornithology was the introduction of the English Sparrow." -W.L. Dawson, The Birds of Ohio, 1903
This video shows the removal (by hunting) of English (House) Sparrows from a feeder for the purpose of creating a friendlier environment for native song birds. This method equals instant death for the birds in question - much better than poisoning or netting.
This was one of 4 trips I made to this location. By the end of the fourth trip, the English sparrow numbers were reduced significantly enough so that they no longer "swarmed" the feeder. Native song birds returned in healthy numbers. I estimated I shot around 200 in total (over the 4 days). I also tore sparrow nests out of the trees and barns. I hit 'em like a ton of bricks. And the result was that there were song birds all over that bird feeder at the end of day 4. (the video was filmed on day 3). I moved around this location, shooting at 3 or 4 "hot spots". This spot was just the easiest to film.
Equipment details:
The Camera Mount I used to record through the scope can be found here:

The slow-motion camera I use to film the shots through the scope is the Casio EX-FC150. That camera is no longer made, but you can buy its successor (which is actually a better camera than the one I use) here:

Gun - Edgun Matador .22 PCP air rifle
Scope - Hawke Sidewinder 30 6.5-20x (video at 10x)

[It goes without saying that] All birds were legally shot, and all are exotic species. I can't say this enough - if you have a problem with hunting do NOT watch this video. Friends can comment without approval. All others will be screened.
For those who do enjoy hunting...um....enjoy. :)
European house sparrows are an out-right plague on some farms. If left unchecked, their numbers swell out of control. They eat a lot of the livestock feed. But, what is worse is that they defecate in that feed. In this way, they can spread crippling disease very quickly to the animals.
Furthermore, these birds are quite aggressive and disrupt the nesting of tree cavity-nesting birds, such as Purple Martin, Eastern Bluebird, Carolina wren, and a variety of woodpeckers.
We not only shoot sparrows and starlings, we remove their nests and habitat (brush) as much as possible. Some folks think it doesn't make a difference. I can tell you that they are not trying hard enough. If you make life tough on these birds, they will find alternative areas to congregate.
Do a Google search on "House Sparrow" and you will find much information about the damage they cause. One thing I'm sure of is that if these birds were ugly like a rat, fewer people would be so quick to chastise me for blasting them.
These birds aren't real smart. Sparrow: "Every time one of my buddies lands on this branch over here his head explodes. Weird. Oh well, it's a good spot to land, I'm going in."
Holy shit ikr
You are really correct, sparrows are dumb, this is from 2+ years experience in having house sparrows they took 2 years (from baby) to know the house window path to nest but now they only know how to get in to the house through different windows but they only go out through the main door and windows near the main door. They don't have intelligence to go back from the other windows they came from.

A friend has killed a bunch of English sparrows and now we see native species at the feeder that we never saw before.
:) I'm a bird nerd, and as much as I love these flyers, I'm really glad your knocking down the colony- sparrows are a ridiculously invasive species, and I'm glad somebody is keeping those bullies in line!
but the sparrows interfered with the local nature with the first place... as he said "ridiculously invasive species"
DAVY that is very stupid, if they are invasive then you want to kill them because the other birds can't compete with them, so shut up.
sorry i Agree with Andrea Charais i do love color bird more then starling woodpecker and sparrows then other bird i hate seeing them taking over my Area neighborhood wil paid him to get them out of their ASAP

We're actually running low on these both of these bird species back here in the UK now. Maybe you should start wrangling them and mailing them back to us!
Shlami Mk4 not a bad plan
not in Sheffield they're not. I have 13 sparrow nests in my garden alone.
Then you are lucky, domestic cats (far as i am concerned a highly invasive species) have slaughtered local bird populations. I have not seen a sparrow in weeks. They also destroyed a nest and killed 4 blackbirds chicks last night :(.
I bloody hate roaming cats, our native wildlife just has not had time to adapt to them.
ratbike rider The solution is as simple as putting a bell round the thing's neck. It should be a legal requirement to having a cat.
Still a pest on feeders here on the north coast of Ireland, bullies that chase the tits and finches and robins away in a swarm. Wouldn't care if they didn't appear like a plague of locusts devouring everything.
I've gotten a few with my daisy model 25. After doing some research on these evil creatures, I will spring for a more sophisticated shooting system. I had always wondered what happened to the red cardinals that used to be around. I called fish and wildlife and they said they are trying to eradicate the english sparrows, along with starlings. They gave me their blessing to blow them to smithereens. their last words to me were "Happy Hunting"!

At least now I know why the _only_ birds I ever see are sparrows.

The problem with invasive species is that they cause the loss of native birds in their natural environment. Depending on things like size, aggressiveness, and dependence on the same food source the bigger more aggressive non native drive out the native birds and can cause loss of the native birds. An example is the more aggressive European starling drives tree cavity nesting native birds like tree sparrow, blue bird and red headed woodpecker out of their nest and take them over.

I've learned so much about bird, wind, airgun ballistics, just how to be a good person. Ted of the year award.
You get a lot of haters who really don't understand what invasive species can do to an ecosystem. As an avid fisherman and hunter I have seen it first hand many times with dfferents species. Like the reintroducing of wolves in Idaho, pet goldfish and carp dumped in lakes and ponds, iguanas and pythons in Florida released in the wild by uneducated people. Keep it up
@OldPossum and is there a problem with enjoying it? I enjoy hunting and fishing and I grin like I fool when I get a deer on the ground or land a big fish...
You are an intelligent, knowledgeable and skilled professional. Thank you for your effort in the fight against invasive bird species.

Up in the mountains we get steady 5-11mph and then hazardous conditions---gust up to 55mph, but 37mph is steady. I have to dope for wind too, and right where you walked the feeding lane, demonstrating the difference---that was good to show people. The hits were solid thwacking.
I have to do this routine around my scratch pile. We have roadrunner sometimes. I had this young one that was curious that liked to hang out on my porch rail. We have the tall ones and standard size roadrunners. I feed them mice I kill. One liked going into my firepit to dig for things. I've been nailing things on the 18" Talon in .25 I made out of the pistol I bought 10 years ago. Sometimes it hits so hard on those Seneca 43gr, that the hit cuts the small varmint in half. Wicked hits. Short or long.

Hey Ted just started watching you videos you make me howl with your humor it makes my day watching your videos
This video inspired me. I'm not a hunter by any means, but these jerks have annoyed me to the brink. I bought a benji 392 .22 and have done some small target practice over a month or two to see how dialed my shooting was. Yesterday, I noticed house sparrows harassing the wren house I set up and they were chasing the wrens off. I found a good downward angle (from the bathroom window). The male HOSP had a mid air tiff with the wren and chased her off and landed back on the front of the house. I didn't hesitate, pulled the trigger, and the bird didn't know what hit him. I was just happy my first shot was incredibly clean. I might've enjoyed it more than I care to admit....

The ignorance on the internet is almost appalling. People who are upset that this guy is shooting birds, READ THE FACTS ABOUT THE BIRDS HE'S SHOOTING!!!! Not to mention they are in no way endangered or have a low population.
Oddly enough these sparrows have become scarce here in Denmark. they used to be everywhere, but improvements in the insulation of our homes, especially in the cities have caused a dramatic decline. they are no longer able to survive the winters.
How would that lead to the decline of the sparrows? I'm sorry I don't see the connection very well.
dkchen In the winter they would seek shelter under roof overhangs in the cities where poor insulation let out heat. As new insulation standards increased in an effort to reduce energy expenditures fewer of the sparrows survived the winter and populations dropped dramatically in the cities. They are still common in rural areas.
trefod Thanks for clarifying :)
where I live, in England, they are dramatically declining too!

The comments on here are hilarious! You earned a new subscriber buddy!
Ted, remember, ...
...some of the negatives just may be newbies to your channel. If they manage to take in a few more of the vids, especially those dealing with pest control, they'll see that your background in the area of native fauna is extensive and valid, and that any harvest is made for quite justifiable reasons. Negative commenters should also remember that growing up and living in rural or farming areas is quite different than growing up in a city's interior. Vastly different approach to, and repercussions from, excessive numbers of a pest species, than a city dweller could perhaps truly 'get'.
I've never seen hunting vids where the narrator had not only such a deep background of research and hands-on experience with these particular species, but were as enjoyably presented as well.
Keep it up, Ted.

Its good you are getting the sparrows, now it is time to eliminate the cat population then you will see native birds return. The domestic / feral cat is one of the worlds major predators of small native birds and animals.
They are terrible for ground nesting birds, and some bush nesting. The barn cats (farm cats) like you see in the video are more important to keep mice off the farm, can't get rid of them unless you want mice in everything you own. Wild feral cats are terrible though! I wish my state would let us shoot them, but its animal cruelty if you are caught. Makes no sense to me. A feral cat is not a farm cat or a domestic "outside" cat. These things get about twice the size of a house cat and will tear you to shreds if you corner one, they eat birds and rodents. Basically a slightly smaller bobcat.
People only do this for fun and where I live in the uk it is illegal to shoot them as they are endangered if people like this carry on than the species may go extinct and he calls them pests just so people subscribe a real pest he should be shooting is cattle and other animals which are bad for the environment!!
That part 💯💯👍🏽👍🏽

May i eat the kitties
Pretty sure my neighbors would call the cops on me if I was out shooting my guns at birds. Have you ever been in that scenario where you had to explain to them how invasive these species are?
If its legal, than nothing anyone can say. Maybe they would send a DNR officer over to make sure you weren't shooting anything illegal. If you are in a city, check and see if air guns are banned first (they are usually not considered firearms), then see if there is an ordinance against killing/hunting animals, if its legal to shoot and legal to take game, there's nothing your neighbors can say.. and really you shouldn't try to explain it. If they are curious, then maybe explain what you are killing and why, if they are pissed off then best to call the police and have them explain to the neighbor that its legal and to stop harassing you.
He is in the sticks were you can do this. In the city u can't shoot or hunt outside a state park. The population is too dense.
Use a Damn BB or pellet gin dummy !
I respect this, this has given me a new appreciation of songbirds and a new hatred for house sparrows.
I’m a vet but I know and have seen the impact of these animals it’s horrible
Yeah. Here in the Philippines, we deal with quite the invasive species of fish ravaging our aquatic farms so we hunt them down and eat those bastards for good measure. Not only does it help nature, but it's a delicious way of asserting dominance.
Sunay Rastogi: These videos + house sparrows kicking barn swallows out of stores made me despise the birds. They are my least favorite bird species because they aren’t even remotely as friendly as Barn swallows and flycatchers yet store owners don’t give a single crap about controlling House sparrows and keeping the friendly Barn swallows safe from invasion.

I got a female house sparrow at 19yds with my Hatsan 125 Vortex at 28/FPE with JSB 18g and it was definitely overkill. He literally landed 1/ft from my splatterburst target while I was plinking. Sad to have to take these little birds out like this - I don't enjoy seeing them die - but they really need to be controlled.
Most people don't realize it, but the sparrows are killers themselves. They kill other birds and steal their nests.
They don't try to contain venomous snakes in the Everglades because they are native species. The snakes that are being contained if Florida are non-native pythons and boas, which are constrictors.
Thank you for the correction. I am going to edit what I wrote.
HowdyThere88 --No problem. I went to Florida last year, and I saw quite a few Burmese and Reticulated pythons while I was there. The state hires people to capture and remove (or kill) them. I love snakes, but I recognize that invasive species must be removed when possible. The constrictors in Florida are decimating the native wildlife. They have no problem eating alligators when they can't find anything more palatable.

I enjoy your videos. Unfortunately, by promoting the domesticated cat, the song bird population is suffering tremendously here in the USA and in other parts of the World. Studies have confirmed that House Cats kill tens of millions of birds and other creatures each year. Entities such as the Sierra Club and others are calling upon cat owners to keep cats indoors in order to preserve our native birds. You would do well to bury or otherwise dispose of the English Sparrow and European Starling bodies in another fashion rather than to whet the appetites of the cats. jay salser
Humans do far more damage to animal populations than any cat... shall we start culling according to our preferences for various species... I'm all for it, just say when. :)
machinech wow that’s a useless point that I totally haven’t seen a billion times.
Guess what dumbass humans are doing a lot of damage and house cats are one of them. By bringing house cats to every continent on earth their damage IS our fault. Unfortunately, we've taken it upon ourselves to be a nation of "animal lovers", a retarded notion, as we fail time and again to identify when an animal has become...a pest. A rat. A cockroach. A destructive parasite, a bully and a thug towards ACTUAL songbirds. No, the house sparrow is not a songbird, for it has no song. Its an unremarkable flying rat.
The noise and their aggression, is starting to get me down.
abloogywoogywoo Even if it was classed as a pest you wouldn't be able to shoot it just because you don't like them, i suggest you read up on the laws before you attempt to shoot anything..
***** I'm afraid you're the one who needs to research the legal definition of a pest and what is allowed to do to one of them. At least here in the US where Ted lives. I think your caboose has detached itself from the train.
You know that house sparrows are on serious decline, right? 70% gone in 20 years. It's illegal to harm or kill any, and to steal eggs. The reason why we live besides them is because they rely on us for food. Not like in the USA where they aren't endangered.
abloogywoogywoo They are on the endangered list!!!
abloogywoogywoo they are in fact beautiful song birds, youre perception of things is very screwed up, shall we judge you as a "flying rat" because you can get food before someone else who actually needs it and your voice sounds like shit and shoot you down?? thought not
