But the 85 Bears DID have a QB. A pro bowl QB in fact, in the midst of winning 25 consecutive starts. Operating the #1 scoring offense in the NFL... the defense didn't do that. And Payton wasn't nearly the RB he was in the mid-late 70's anymore.
Stop acting like Jim Mcmahon didn't exist, or just held onto the coat tails of a great defense. Just because Charles Martin, a dirty Packers player, cheap shotted him in 86, just as he was starting to show the ability, or luck mostly actually, to stay healthy. I recommend you watch the 85 Bears Week 3 game vs the Vikings to get an idea of how that team looks with, compared to without him. Then check out the Dolphins game after that. Defenses aren't so elite when they're on the field all day. They never were though when Mcmahon was healthy.

I think passing over Lamar was worse, for everybody. Baker Mayfield, the Browns, & Lamar himself. The Ravens seem to resent having an élite QB (especially the cost). The Browns meanwhile chased after The Worst QB Option & over-paid him.
All of this could have been avoided had they chosen Lamar.

If you want, I can tear them down. You remember when Mac Jones was discovered to be Seeking Advice outside the Pats? If Bellichick had responded to that With Silence we'd all know Jones was on the way out, right? Well?
Fields called out his coaches publicly after week 7 of '22. What did *their silence* indicate? The Exact Same Thing. But because this indicated that the Bears were betraying We The Fans as well as Fields, everyone seems to have gone into denial over it.
Well, let me remind you of what you "forgot" while in denial. 1) "The Bears _had to call_ for Fields to Not Throw to Certain Receivers on Certain Plays to simplify the offense for him because he Can't Read Defenses." That's the 'reason' Bears fans made up to excuse a play-call that had Zero Chance of succeeding. What's wrong with all this?
First, obviously, if Fields can't read defenses, you're putting his life at risk out there. _Especially_ when you call for your o-line to ua-cam.com/video/FiiK21VzI_o/v-deo.html let all the pass-rushers through to him. He can't read defenses so he may not run for his life.
2nd, how is forcing Fields to stop mid-play or mid-throw, read a player's jersey #, try & remember whether it's one he's allowed to throw to on that play _then_ throw simpler than throwing to whatever receiver he sees? A real head-scratcher these excuses y'all make up.
      2) The You The Fans said "Fields holds onto the ball too long." So now you not only forgot that he was ordered *By His Coaches To* hold onto the ball instead of pass it, it's his fault now. Or should he drop the ball instead of run away from the pass-rushers his coaches order his o-linesmen to run away from? Like they _told us that_ they were moving away from him. You think they spent the next 1.5 years calling plays designed to make their decision look stupid?
      3) One can't _unlearn_ to read defenses. So ua-cam.com/video/QuhUbISnr8s/v-deo.html *proves* he can now & always did read 'em which means that there is No Excuse for calling plays with zero chance of success. Also in weeks 8-10 of '22 & weeks 11, 14-17 of '23 different play sets were called in which Fields was far more efficient & scored more points. The 3-game streak in '22 he led the Entire NFL in offense proving it was _only_ the play-calling holding him back as he played up with Allen, Mahomes & Burrow when the play0-calling changed.
The last thing is someone spliced Fields' college highlights into a video with Caleb Williams'. It's no surprise to me, but what do you know? Fields ua-cam.com/video/5JO1PsupF_U/v-deo.html is a better rusher _AND_ more accurate passer who scrambles & makes throws on the run & at weird arm angles better in the NFL than Caleb has done so far in college.
      This team is _great!_

It's hard to complete passes when you're dodging the entire front line of the other team. The Bears are famous for not having a decent front line. Even McMahon had that problem and ended up with a lacerated kidney and repeated concussions. He currently is suffering from CTE as a result of repeated brain trauma. The pad that all quarterbacks wear around their waists and middle was first introduced for McMahon to protect his kidney and ribs. Even a mediocre quarterback can have a decent game if he isn't getting pounded into the turf play after play. It used to irritate the heck out of me when critics would call McMahon "brittle." He took some incredibly strong hits.

    Great video!
As a Bears fan I will come right out and say it. They have an ownership problem! This is where players and coaches come to die. They can't draft well. The scout's evaluation of the talent is poor. Playing quarterback for the Bears is like a suicide mission. They have lacked an offensive line for 2 decades. Sure, we could have drafted better as the video shows, but those more recent picks would not have florished here. It would have been more of the same, injuries upon injuries. If you can't protect your quarterback, you have nothing....

    • @DianeLake-sw3ym
      @DianeLake-sw3ym 2 місяці тому

I wondered about this. While I don't watch the Bears, it's my husband's team, I have said to him it is the front office that is the problem. The talent scouting, the guys in charge of who to pick, that the Bears cannot assess talent.
I grew up in KC. I grew up with the Chiefs. My team. I watched a video about the guy who discovered Mahomens. In 2017, Veech was the guy watching the tapes and the talent. He was suppose to assess a guy on the same team at Texas Tech as Mahomes. He found himself drawn to the QB. He began a campaign for getting this kid. But, it was a year before Mahomes even declared. Still, Veech wanted him and told Andy Reid he was the next Goat. So when he declared the Chiefs were sold on him and move mountains to get him. The only real thing in their way was the Bears. They had the 2nd draft pick and The Chiefs traded big stuff to get to 10th pick. Breath was held until the Bears announced Trubitski.
The Bears long needed a Veech in their scouting and then listen to him.

I believe this is why they are constantly looking for that franchise QB. I also can’t 100% put the blame on the QBs because in the modern era their offensive line hasn’t exactly been spectacular while at the same time running into injuries. It makes for a terrible situation with Bears QBs. Is Caleb really the answer? No, unless they can find a way to develop what many say is a generational talent.

The part that's most troubling though isn't the PERSON playing the position....but the way this franchise coaches and treats this position. I truly believe the Bears have had some great players come in to play in Chicago....and were cut down at the knees by horrendous play calling and overall game strategy. I don't think Aaron Rogers or Patrick MaHomes would have had the careers they've had....if they ended up with the Bears. We'll see if this changes with Caleb....but as someone who's seen this many times before.... they'll have to prove it before I'll believe it.

Good video overall but you missed a couple things on the Fields analysis. Dalton was signed first and only signed there because he was promised the starting job. They had no idea they’d be able to draft a qb but made a horrible desperation trade when Fields dropped because Pace and Nagy were lame ducks and thought a young qb might buy them more time. Dalton was not brought in to mentor anyone, but it came out recently that when he and Foles did try to be good teammates and give Fields some pointers he had no interest.
“Faulty pass protection” - the line has been ranked top 10 both of the last 2 years in ESPN pass block win rate%. I’m not making that up, anyone can look it up. That stat measures how often the line holds their blocks for 2.5 sec, when most good qbs have the ball out of there. But as we all know Fields holds the ball for-fing-ever and only got slightly better over time at sensing pressure and/or throwing the ball away. Sorry not sorry to bust everyone’s bubble but most of the sacks were on him.
Looking forward to more of your videos.

I just hope for the Bears' sake that Caleb isnt just Fields 2.0. No doubt this comment will get some backlash, but if you want to see something interesting, look up the long list of USC QBs that have been drafted into the NFL. They were all busts, some of them terrible terrible busts, and all of them highly regarded in scouting reports. The ONE exception being Carson Palmer, who although had a long and fairly consistent career, didnt achieve the HoF, nor will he. That's the only one (You can say Hayden, I disagree). USC has a long history of being a very QB friendly system, and an equally long history of those QBs not being nearly as good in the NFL as they looked in college.
It's not just Darnold, Kessler, Sanchez, Barkley, Leinart or Cassel either. It's a long and storied list. Does that mean Caleb will follow suit? Who knows. Just saying drafting stud QBs from that system has had a very low percentage success rate.

I do believe McMahon deserved that Pro Bowl in '85. While he didn't put up the biggest counting stats, he had the seventh-best passer rating in the NFL, including the second best in the NFC. Possibly the main reason his counting stats aren't that big is because the Bears kept blowing out opponents in games that were usually over by the end of the third quarter, they ran the ball more to chew clock and potentially limit mistakes. Only one of his touchdown passes was in the fourth quarter, and it was early in that quarter, and they were up 13, which it is definitely possible to come back from.

Exactly. If he had taken care of himself instead of being lazy and blaming others for his injuries...he could've been really great. Many of the issues with McMahon you still see to this day in his interviews. He only focuses on the part he cares about and ignores all the mistakes he made that lead to his problems. Many-a-time he'd throws his body around to get yards, but he also did not take proper action after releasing a pass to avoid a late hit. Many of his injuries came on those kinds of plays. Just the other day I was looking up an old highlight from 1985 of William Perry returning a fumble 59 yards against the Lions (ua-cam.com/video/k5yP84lGhjQ/v-deo.html). Between all the instant replays of Perry's play, McMahon re-entered the game and threw a touchdown to Ken Margerum. In the replay of McMahon's touchdown, McMahon gets hit really late, but the part to focus on is that he didn't even try to evade the hit. He just took it like a limp dummy so he'd have somebody else to blame. that's how McMahon typically gets hurt.

First off well done! This feels like a professionally made video!
As a bears fan I’d say the issue is the organization and coaches. Look at Detroit, the moment you say some shake ups at the top you saw changed and things are looking good there rn. We just always seem to be lacking in one of those two at any given time for most of our history. It doesn’t matter how many great QBs you throw at us, or how many good players you give them to work with, if the coaches and organization aren’t good then you’re gonna be see the same BS, just to varying degrees. Again, look at the lions, back during the stafford days they had a darn good QB and had some good weapons to work with offensively and defensively…and yet they just couldn’t make it work. And then suddnely you see them really shake things up and suddenly you see an improvement and see things really turn around. The fact that we can take QBs like cutler who did well before us, and get little out of them, shows it requires some changes beyond players.
I will say that I think Jim McMahon was a good quarterback. He wasn’t a Joe Montana or Tom Brady but he was good imo. Looking at the scores of the games that season yes you see the defense kept their opponents from scoring quite a bit but you also see some good numbers for what they scored and that requires a good offense and a good QB. I don’t think he was carried like you seem to say. The 2006 bears definitely carried Rex and that obviously lead them to fail.

Great video! As a lifelong bears fan (since ‘95), all the memories of shitty QB, after shitty QB came flooding back. By pointing out the Bears lack of being proactive at the position despite having a “QB” already, makes me feel even more confident in them drafting Caleb Williams. I’m cautiously optimistic, but we will see how it turns out in a few years.

Yo this was well put together yo! As a die hard you told our story well. As a young fan all those woes from 2006 and on I've felt each one. The way you built up the Parkey kick with excellent, it's like it was that playoff game all over again! I called the mis kick cause I had watched him hit the uprights more than five times throughout the whole season 🤦🤦🤦

Amazing to hear about Jim McMahon era. As a kid, he was so popular even tho we never really followed the nfl closely. Just thru media and advertising, they made him seem like the best qb and alongside the goats. But because of this vid, I now know that he was mid and that it was personality that made him popular, more than his talent. Crazh how media/advertising can influence people who aren't paying much attention or looking into the details. Thanks fornthe trip down memory lane

Content was excellent and well done. Sucks our beloved franchise has had some bad quarterbacking. Hoping Williams helps us turn the corner.
