I just had troubles with this borer this week of July 15th, 2021 here in E TX on my acorn squash mostly. They have attacked laying eggs on my watermelons as well. So far they have left my cucumbers alone. But they laid eggs on my outer sides of the leaves as well. I watched her come in and yes she mimics a wasp pretty much and I swatted at it. It comes back to attack also. Not only is it a pest, its crazy. haha! But thanks for the video! I learned a lot.
Thank you so much for a very informative piece on the vine borers and squash bugs. It seemed you were talking to commercial farmers as your audience, I am a home gardener audience and would like to hear more emphasis on organic solutions, if possible. I did hear you, you stated organic solutions are to be used early and are not too efficacious. I planted 8 zucchini’s and crooked neck squash and all got vine borers. I am down to five but most are barely surviving, they are about 1/7 th the size of a normal zucchini. My question is, should I leave them or take all of them out? It’s my first time growing them. I have manually gone after the borers with a tweezer and most of my zucchini plants have holes through and through where the vine borers were. The plants are alive but nearly not productive. Finally I am glad a university finally put out a video on UA-cam. I am learning from other gardeners but like the official word to come from universities in UA-cam format. Have a great day!
I found a long pair of tweezers and a nut picker works good for removals of vine bore. It also helps if you grow sqush vertical. Spray vine with need oil and dawn . Repeat when it rains it made a huge difference. If you see the moth squish it's little guts out.😊
I inject BT into the vines and have had great success here in NJ for the past 3 years.
