If you don't like that feeling when your legs are trapped in your kayak and you can't breathe, don't take this line!
The full film of highlights of our paddling the East Lyn and Hoar Oak Falls on Exmoor (Brendon to the sea) is here: • Kayaking the East Lyn
This is an extract of the footage in which me and my boat were trapped in a siphon (aka Syphon) in the first crux rapid at the beginning of the East Lyn Gorge.
This siphon is not yet in the UK Rivers Guidebook but the existing entry is here:
    www.ukriversgui...
This was my first whitewater paddle down the grade 4 / grade 5 East Lyn river. It was at a medium level (1.68m at Brendon) and apart from the accident/incident that was this rather dramatic vertical pin, it was great fun!

I have a step-out pillar in my boat but my left leg was squashed and I have nerve damage in my right leg which makes it fairly useless. Also I couldn't get to the grab loop of my spraydeck as it was pinned under the rock too so I couldn't get to the pillar unfortunately...Very lucky to have a great team around me :-)

Just wanted to share that a kayaks spray skirt can be pulled from the side of the cockpit in the case that the grab loop is inaccessible, tears off, or in the misfortunate case that it would be tucked into the boat. There is usually enough slop or at least a lower amount of tension on the longer side sections of the cockpit that the spray skirt is stretched over that fingers can fairly easily work under this section of the skirt and be pulled free. You have great videos!

That's funny you got pinned in the EXACT same spot as the last pinning video I just watched on youtube - small world! Look at this guy's pin - same spot 3rd person view: Kayaker Trapped Underwater Saved by Friends' Quick Reactions

Yeah it was really odd because there were about 4 of us within a couple of weeks... Seems like something shifted

nose of the boat is pinned behind a rock, force of water on it holds that tight. Similarly the force of water on the paddler jams you down into the boat, mostly likely bends you down doubled up. In boats without a central rigid step-out pillar your feet are basically flapping around, useless, nothing to push against to get you up and out, using your powerful thigh muscles.

there was likely a rock underwater right after the drop that caught the bow of the boat when it went under water stopping the boat and holding the boat with the boater in it under the falls

Hi Freddie! Hope that all is well! I've been more into writing articles and photography lately but going to Italy in May Half Term so will get some footage for everyone! Good luck over the next few months... I'm rooting for you!

Yikes! Not to be ignorant, but how does the water actually hold the boat and boater? So glad you got freed quickly.
