WAY to GO Gracie and family! ❤❤❤
WOW! I am shocked at the negative remarks and all the doomed forewarning and what not…did ya’ll not see all the other folks out there hiking??? AND…Dad did NOTHING wrong! His son had already been out there and was doing this anyways….I think it’s cool Dad went along with his kids! They had water, food and plenty of others out on the trail. Way to live it up and make a memory…So many wimps out there these days…. Way to enjoy this beautiful life as a family!

Although I don’t think the tone of some of the earlier comments was necessary, it is true that lack of judgement was repeatedly shown; and the points made in those earlier comments were valid. When hiking do thorough research on what to wear, dangers unique to the area, etc. National Parks always have plenty of resources on their website (as does the GC). The father is most accountable for the mistakes made. His son could have died, and the father was pushing him on. I’m glad everyone made it out ok. Please, do your homework in the future, and take the advice and warnings from the park/rangers seriously.

GPS watches don't read accurately there. Your son's mileage was 46. Your wife's was 22. You and your daughter did 24.
The way you guys did this was incredibly dangerous: Time of year. Time of day. Lack of proper training. Not knowing where you were, or the mileages to all of the significant locations (rest stops) and how far between each. No full brim shade hats, and your daughter in no hat with her entire neck, head, face, and shoulders frying in the high altitude sun. Tank top on your daughter, exposing so much of her to the sun. Not getting hair and shirts wet at every single water location, and in the all the creek crossings, as well as along Bright Angel Creek from Wall Creek, all the way to Phantom. Separating from mom and leaving her to fend for herself for over an hour on the climb, and who knows how long she was actually walking solo, and again, lack of training, lack of sun protection, not getting hair and clothing wet. 2 people have already been found dead on the River Trail (the section in the Gorge, from Black Bridge to the River Delta Rest Stop) this season, (in the last month), and it's "this" kind of hiking in the Canyon that leads to either needing to be rescued, or worse. With so much information available on UA-cam alone, plus the video that Park Service released in April (posted on the NPS website, as well as here in YT), it's hard to understand the 4 of you going into the Canyon for more than a couple miles.
I started backpacking there with wife in 2007, and we returned in 2008 with our 8yr old daughter, and came back year, after year. In 2015, My daughter and I started running R2R's, mid-Aug, on our birthdays, when she turned 16. We did that together 5yrs in a row, and then I started doing 2 a year, solo. Was just there at the end of May to run another Rim2River, as a speed run. I'll be there mid-Aug, to celebrate my 61st with another R2R run (we run them we don't walk or use poles). We/I rescue people like yourselves almost every trip in the Canyon, and we carry extra electrolyte and GU Roctane for such efforts, and it's a real disappointment to turn our vacation experience and training, into a rescue operation.

They knew the GPS was inaccurate, they said so in the video. They dunked their stuff in water repeatedly throughout, including the son getting completely in the river. The only valid part of your criticism is they didn't have sun protection clothing, but this is common, even for serious thru-hikers, some folks do it that way. Ultra runners don't have tons of sun gear on either.
It's definitely a dangerous hike, but I think they did a lot more research than you're suggesting. I also think they are far more trained than you realize. An untrained person can barely walk 12 miles with elevation much less what they did. They have obviously developed a strong base over many years.

Congratulations. I did rim-to-rim back in the '70s. I blew out my right knee on the way up. It still reminds me when I hike. By God's grace, I still enjoy the journey, up and down, good or bad; it is part of my life story. Praise the Lord.

Absolutely fantastic achievement, especially with the family. I did the North rim to the Colorado and back up in a day, but to do the round trip is incredible(Charley is my hero). Complete shout out to the family. It was in the 1980's when I used to hike the Canyon, so I was surprised not to see any mule urine or feces on the trail, especially at the switchbacks. This made it quite aromatic in the summers. Do the mules not go down the Kaibab any longer on either Rim? Thanks for sharing!

Great job everyone! Don't let the internet experts who have commented on here get you down. It might have not been the cleanest hike, but you guys did it. I accomplished a rim-to-rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon in mid October of 2016. I was 51 years old then. I hiked from the South Rim to the North Rim, stayed over night. I maybe got two hours of sleep. Then I hiked back to the South Rim the next day. It was brutal, especially climbing up to the North Rim. It was so windy and cold. I thought I was going to die, but I made it. In the end, making it is all that matters.

You don't understand religion if you think physical law and God are in contradiction. You should at least have some idea of what they believe if you're going to criticize. They believe God created the physical laws behind the processes you describe. Many physicists and mathematicians are Christian. I would know, they are my colleagues in the math department at the major university where I am employed. Physical law is incredibly mysterious. No physicist thinks it just "makes sense", we are all profoundly baffled. God is just as good an explanation as any, the situation is very, very weird. Arrogant people act like they understand it because they know a tiny bit of science. I have been studying science full time for more than a decade and KNOW I don't understand it...
