    This is a fantastic video. I definitely tend to be very stressed when creating. I am working on re-embracing the idea of creating art being "play". Perfectionism is really not fun. Also... in English, we refer to the hand we use for writing, etc, being our "dominant" hand. Those who use both for writing and such are ambidextrous.

      I was just coming here to say this! It’s always the tortoise and the hare. Perhaps they changed it to be more regional since we don’t really have many wild hedgehogs in the states? Idk that’s just a thought.

    • @stephanie.kilgast
      @stephanie.kilgast  Рік тому +4

      I knew it in France as the hare and the tortoise as well, they are variations on that story throughout Europe :)

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 2 місяці тому

      The one with the tortoise is different. The tortoise was consistent and strong and kept working, where the hare slept.
      In this one, the hedgehog is scheming and the hare is fooled, until death.
      Big difference.

    🦔 I'm sorry you're suffering such upheaval and stress, right now - it's hard to focus on yourself sometimes. I have to deliberately schedule myself "RELAX" time in my schedule or I'll work right through. It definitely feels like the world pushes the idea that no matter what you do, it's never enough. Which is straight up wrong! So thank you for the reminder, and don't forget to take care of yourself, too. 🍄🐚

    Its nice to find someone else who struggles to put herself first. Doing Councilling right now that's been realised as my biggest problem. I do everything for my closest family and neglect myself but I don't know how to change that. My Councillor gave me a task to do before my session that's all about and so far I'm failing badly. Xx

    • @stephanie.kilgast
      @stephanie.kilgast  Рік тому +1

      You have to think of yourself sometimes, you can’t help others if you’re not in a great place yourself.
      If you are happy and in good health, you’re going to be able to give back much more. It’s a fine balance.
      I’m not too bad about it, apart for the work, where I tend to focus all my energy on what has to be done and not what I want to do.
      So I don’t have the best advice, but yes, you are important as a person and need to be kind to yourself. I hope you can turn things around. Try to listen to your councillor. Just get out and have a piece of cake, with tea and book and try to enjoy it :)

Mine takes the form of numb fingers and electric shocks radiating down my arm--not fun! It is so important for younger artists to know the hazards of bad posture while making art, and I wish someone had told me decades ago to be mindful of this. We only get one body! Wishing you tons of success, good health and happiness! 💚

      Yes, being mindful of your own body is really important. It's honestly the main reason I do yoga and walk a lot, and am mindful of my diet, to avoid pain later in life. Clearly, I still need to make a few adjustments...
      I'm not that young anymore, 37, not old either, but yeah, would not say I"m a young artist. In any case, I'm not in constant pain and I'm seeing two health practitioners right now. I don't want this to get worse.
      Thank you so much, and I hope you're doing ok with your arm!

      Yes, from the beginning! Your polymer clay mini food was hugely inspiring! I was in a traditional ceramics class at the time, and I’m most familiar with earthenware clay, so it kinda blew open the possibilities of what can be done with polymer clay. I haven’t played in a while with it but I may bring it back to my supply inventory and incorporate it in my paintings

    Oh the pain, I'm going through that at the moment. It got so bad that I went to hospital. Turns out it's tennis elbow. Was told to buy an elbow support which hopefully arrives today. Fortunately I'm mainly left handed, but I miss sculpting and sewing, so frustrating, have lots I want to do. Still cant cook though, cant stand for long, so I'm surviving on lettuce and cereal, the bf can't cook. I like the way you mounted the hedgehog onto the book, great tip. Will have to try that. Amazing sculpture, must have took an age to add all that detail so inspiring. I took part in a collaboration to make a piece inspired by fairy tales, I chose to sculpt the troll from 3 billy goats gruff. He was the good guy in my story. Thank you for the fabulous video. Reminds me of our hedgehog patient.
    We found one in our garden, breathing heavily, one and a half years ago. Turned out she had lung worms (parasites) most likely due to eating snails. The vet gave her medication against the worms.
    She lived another 6 months in our care. Turned out to be real picky with food once she got a taste of cooked chicken and scrambled eggs. She didn't like cat food at all after that.
    We found another one that was too young/small to survive the winter. So we fed her as well. After she gained enough weight she was able to hibernate in our garage. We set her free last spring 🦔.
    We then placed 2 wooden boxes (cat proof) with food in the garden and had up to 4 hedgehogs visiting regularly last year. (Captured on a wildlife camera.)
    This way they hopefully are less exposed to parasites. As a result the number of snails in the garden has gone up 😅
    🦔

      I'm going to a flea market today (you never know) and if I don't find anything there, I'll just order new trestles.
      Also, thank you! I didn't know him and his work is amazing!
      Ikea have those desks, I have one that is manual (it was much cheaper)
      It's good when sculpting too as. you can adjust it to eye level.

    What reasons did you stop using polymer clay? Was it mostly to do with it being plastic based, or are there other environmental factors that you know of which make other clays better environmentally? 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔

    • @stephanie.kilgast
      @stephanie.kilgast  Рік тому

      Yes. Art and environmental questions is a conundrum. I really love sculpting mixed media, but all clays have some plastic binder (usually at the very least glue). Polymer clay has to be cured, so that’s extra energy to use (and waste).
      But then you also have the whole acrylics paints issue (plastic in liquid form) and varnishes, gesso and so on.
      I arrived at a point in my thinking process where I was thinking of just stopping everything, but I had to choose myself in that regard.
      I have a bit of another point of view now, I took a few steps back and I consider that the amount of impact I create is a lot less than other things.
      Take a look around your room, everything is coated in plastic, most of these things will end up in the landfill and you will likely repaint your walls a few times in your life (with plastic I might add)
      So if I create small sculptures that are made partly of plastic, compared to what is happening in the world, and especially since I talk about these issues in my work, it’s not as bad. Or at least that’s how I deal with my conscience.
      I still try to implement more paper+watercolor in my sculptures and I picked up oil painting, so I certainly am trying to reduce my impact, but I’d rather focus on other aspects of my life to reduce my eco footprint. (a vegetarian diet, no kids)
      I found it more sustainable and healthy for me to not feel guilty about every single thing I did that I loved doing in essence.
      The key for me is to find the balance of reducing my impact while still enjoying my life.
      That’s also what I tell people, eat less meat, buy less stuff, just do everything a little less.
      We’re humans and we live in societies that have a huge impact, so as much as it’s great to try and lessen it, it would be foolish to think we can be « perfect ».

    🦔🐇 ah les contes de Grimm ! Un jour j’aimerais bien travailler sur les musiciens de la ville de Brème, un de mes préférés et avec plein d’animaux 😉 j’aime beaucoup la composition de cette sculpture en rapport avec son titre, et le lièvre et le museau du hérisson sont juste parfaits 😍 Question pâte polymère, j’utilise la Premo de chez Sculpey et qui supporte très bien l’acrylique (c’est celle qu’utilise Virginie Ropars), et pour peindre dessus j’utilise la peinture pour Warhammer de chez Citadelle qui est très pigmentée, puis le vernis mat Mister Super Clear pour protéger. Je ne sais pas si tu as déjà essayé ces gammes, il y a tellement de choses il faut dire ! Heureuse de savoir que tu as pu trouver une solution pour tes douleurs, et je te souhaite d’avoir le temps de faire les créations qui te font envie ! Très bon week-end et encore bravo pour cette pièce

      C'est clair qu'il y a beaucoup de marques! En ce moment j'aime bien la cos clay (pâte polymère) et j'utilise la gouache acrylique de turner et la soflat de golden. Je ne compte pas changer de si tôt, j'aime bien les acryliques "pour artistes" parce que je préfère choisir d'après les pigments utilisés, ce qui est impossible avec les gammes de peintures pour modélisme.
      Et merci :)

      @@stephanie.kilgast Merci beaucoup pour ta réponse ! Ah la cosclay me fait très envie, je pense essayer dans pas longtemps. La marque Golden m’attire beaucoup également, je sais qu’elle est vraiment super notamment pour ce genre de pièces. Je ne savais pas pour le manque d’infos avec les peintures pour modélisme, je ne m’étais pas posée la question mais je comprends parfaitement que tu y sois attentive. Je viens de voir que tu as une nouvelle vidéo qui a un si joli thème, je vais la déguster demain matin pour bien démarrer la journée 😊

      @@marinagelineau8341 la cosclay est pas mal et elle prend bien la couleur. La golden est bien, mais honnêtement je préfère la turner, c'est juste plus pratique les tubes. Ils vont bientôt sortir les 2 pigments qui me manque dans leur gamme (et la raison pour laquelle je me suis tournée vers la soflat)
      Enfin... il y a tellement de matériaux aujourd'hui, on pourrait passer des mois à tout tester pour de pas trouver de préférence XD

    Hi Stephanie. It's exactly the right time to work through this issue. You must begin tweaking things on this new learning curve. I am in similar situations with my resilience and stamina , sooooo !!! This is holding a mirror right up front of me lol. Doing these things for ourselves has been the true path of least resistance. 🙏 Thank you and here's to us 21st century Woman . 🌟🪶🌒🐈‍⬛

    🦔 You know, this story about the hedgehog and the hare makes me think of people who make their way up there by cheating.

    • @stephanie.kilgast
      @stephanie.kilgast  Рік тому

      yes and no, I see it as outsmarting the hand you were given. The hedgehog can't wind a race against the hare, it's physically impossible, so the only chance he has is to find a way around its own limits.
      I think it's the same in life. For instance, some people have bad memory, so they need to write things down more and create files to remember key things to work around their shortcomings. It's not considered cheating, it's using your brain to even up your own limits.

    I used to want to become an artist....but nowadays it's just so much bullsheet - make vids, make shorts, reels, make a website, market yourself, edit vids, make courses, do this, do that, so much that it's not even about being an artist anymore, more like a marketing influencer. I love your channel because you offer a very sober view on everything. I know you do courses and get your income from galleries which is not so easy to get to, but you still sell it in a sober manner, not like "HAHA I'M AN ARTIST EVERYTHING IS SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS AND MONEY FALLS FROM THE SKY" :D ... also many online artists nowadays don't even do actual art, how many channels I have seen go from "speedpainting XY" to "10 tips with paintbrushes" or "monthly art subscription box unboxing", or churning out videos so frequently that it affects the quality of their art.... honestly I could NEVER be an artist, it burned me out so much I could not touch a paintbrush for over 3 years and every time I did, I started anxiety breathing and realized I did not enjoy art AT ALL. I am only now getting back to it, as a hobby of course. Nevertheless, gorgeous work as usual Stephanie. You are one of my favorite artists both because of your work, philosophies, and your channel overall. 🦔

      In all honesty, « being an artist » always came with challenges. In previous centuries artists who were able to make a living from their craft would do so mostly from commissions, or/and from patrons. Nowadays at least you can follow a more personal introspective path, so that’s a clear bonus.
      As for the rest, indeed you need to be a bit of a Swiss knife, you have to know how to run a business, make sense of the internet, social media and algorithm, while still honing your skills and finding your niche.
      You’re your own boss, so no paid holidays, no money ever comes in if you stop working (passive income is a lie) but you can also define your own schedule and are relatively free.
      I would not trade it with anything else, but yeah, it’s not an easy job. (Easier than most though)
      That being said you don’t have to be a « professional » artist to be an artist, as in, you don’t have to actively try and sell/showcase your work to do interesting work. You can also treat it as something you do on the weekends and in the evenings. It will take more time to develop ideas, but you’ll also be free of financial questions.
      Many artists (today and in the past) have/had a money job to sustain their art career, there’s nothing wrong with that. I think it can be a real advantage, because you can do art for the sole purpose of creation.
      All that to say, please get back to your art, even if it’s just once a week, creation is such an important part of being a human :)
      And thank you for your comment, it made me really happy :)

      yeah, basically a lot of white glue and some filler. It dries translucent and usually flexible. It's incredibly strong, however it shrinks when drying and it also dries fairly quickly.
