Dark City has always been a favorite of mine, but no one ever seems to talk about it. In my opinion, a very underrated classic, and one that has withstood the test of time. Thank you!
Great movie. Just recently watched it.
The director's cut is the only way to watch this movie. Agreed that it's underrated.
What truth
@ agreed I didn't get it when it came out in 98, I was maybe 27 then I get it now...
Never seen it now I'm gonna
The Matrix before the Matrix was the Matrix.
Also 1995's _Strange Days_ as well as _The Truman Show_ (1997) . The Wachowski -br-- -s didn't mention them, but they obviously drew inspiration from those then-recent hits. There's also 1962's _The Brain that Wouldn't Die_ and _The Outer Limits_ 1965 episode "The Brain of Colonel Barham" based on Brain-in-a-Vat theory, which in turn was based on Descartes' 1641 evil demon. And who knows who conjectured simulated realities before that…
Cool
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z I wouldn't mind seeing a film comics explained episode for the creatures featured in the Netflix series Bird box. @ film comics explained
The Watchowskis just ripped off the comic named The Invisibles. The Matrix 2 and 3 movies deviated from The Invisibles story so much, a big reason why the Matrix sequels sucked.
There was also the Thirteenth Floor, eXistenz.
One of the best movies most people haven't seen or remember.
Jennifer Connelly was absolutely Haunting in it.
She'd be alright if she wasn't so hairy.
One of most underrated and misunderstood movies in last 20 years
26 years now.
Why do creatures who can't tolerate water keep coming to Earth?
Yeah like, its mostly water here it literally fall from the sky every now and then... go away
All of the water is hidden, so they don't notice it until they get here.
Or something.
It's 80% of the planet. Eventually some "advanced" alien group has to think:
"Blue bad? Oh, lets go to that RED PLANET directly next store! Brilliance!!!"
(Also at no point am I insulting this channel. I think it's incredible and wag my tail whenever I see a new posting. But seriously, WATER?!?!)
Pretty sure these aliens had no choice. They had to take life where they found it.
Desperate time calls for desperate measures. But still, jellyfish like alien who literally died if it touches water? Seems contradicting to me.
I also couldn't help but notice the city the Strangers created seemed to be an unmistakable reference to Plato's Cave allegory. The city itself is the cave and the Strangers are the beings casting shadows on the walls for the human subjects. The humans have no way of knowing of anything except what the Strangers show and provide them in the City, just as the prisoners in the Cave have no way of knowing anything outside of the shadows they were presented and the sounds they could hear. The people innately knew/felt that something else was up as they kept having unexplained memories of other places and unexplained glitches in the Stranger's own design aroused suspicion in some just as the diffused sunlight does for the prisoners in Plato's Cave. Those who were awake during the tuning are those who escaped the Cave and saw the outside light (the Truth). And just as Plato predicted, when they tried to go back into the cave to inform their peers that they were trapped in the cave, they were rejected as the people would rather live with what they already know than seek out the truth and possibly have to change.
Yea but why deny the truth? The reality from platos and similar settings is that the enlightened or ones that saw glitch are different than the people that supposedly dont want to see or here or look for truth as in those people in cave dont want to here or believe truth because they are the shadow and the guy who saw truth is the experiment or only guy in cave. We have evidence of that in our reality theres scientists that suposedly for something to exist or not exist it has to be proven and then theres psychologists that say if you cant prove something its not real and youre crazy thats contradicting powers in control right?
@@jasonharvote4093 the same reason why Plato's arguments were rarely refuted.
Embarrassment.
See, Plato was big like Xbox, and when folks took to debate with ol'Plato, his go to was, in the modern vernacular, "maybe you would rather fight me bro?", and Plato wasn't some slouch at wrestling neither.
@@handsomehobo1270 im not sure what you mean but seems you didnt understand my comment. I comented on why would somebody deny something if they didnt know if it was true or false. I dont do it and science cant deny or believe if it doesnt see it or cant be proven. You seem to imply that plato used violance or something. The truth still stands about what i said. If i said something and you didnt believe it is your choice but if you were to contradict me and insult me or anybody that is on you or the lerson doing that and you couldnt say you didnt have it coming. And whether somebody felt they had to use violance to prove something doesnt change the fact of something is real or not and thats what seems youre implying. If birds can fly and i say they dont and use violance to tell you they dont that doesnt change the fact that birds do fly. So my point is not about violance but why somebody would deny something they dont know if its real or not.
so our reality as we know it currently pretty much... those with families to raise, mortgages to pay don't want to know the truth...but leaves those of us that do feeling useless to help
That's why this world stays the way it is... 😞
Dark city is one of those movies that you do not want remade or Rebooted. I fear that the current climate of entertainment will completely ruin what made this movie is so great.
same with total recall but that happened
They did it with The Adjustment Bureau.
*I want one of the main characters in Dark City to be gender-swapped like they are doing with Dune.*
I don't think they'll remake this one
I concur as well as my family members. Never remake this classic.
This movie is a perfect blend of neo- noir, sci-fi, fantasy, and psychological thriller. Alex Proyas did a wonderful job with this film, until we got Gods of Egypt in 2016. What a mess!
I liked Gods of Egypt 😀 I thought it was interesting how other people try to explain The One True God The Lord Jesus Christ 😇
Pamela Haskell uh ok.
Shaine White Alex Proyas is great in doing dark films. His film version of the Crow has been the best and no other comes close.
@@889Pammov "The one true god"? How do you know Jesús is truer than Zeus or Odin or Whatever other god mankind once believed in???
Fun movie
Are strangers just celibate cenobite
Do/can Cenobites get it on? 🤔
- it’s just like asking if Elder Gods get it on, possible but who would really want to see that except a victim from the Barkerverse
The Cenobites are celibate cenobites.
Great film. The strangers from Dark City make me think of a society made up of Men in Black. Not the benevolent MIBs from the movies, the eerie and threatening MIBs of urban legend.
Incelobites... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
More than a little late to this but, I think the Strangers’ extinction was caused by individuality. When they “Tune” together, their strength increases and maybe even the ability to share energy with one another. They would share their minds and form the whole of the hive-mind. As more and more of them started to show individuality they would lose the ability to share memories and energy with each other. So, the set out to find a care for this plague of individuality and found humans. A race of beings who could survive without a hive-mind. If they could find a human that could “tune” and inject them with their collective memories, it would strengthen the hive-mind.
This movie + hallucinogens = Transcendental journey through the nature of reality , consciousness, free will, and just how visually stunning a stylized green and black morphing world can be while you are tripping balls
My fear is to never come back
I'm gonna say that watching this movie on hallucinagens would NOT lead to a fun night.
Mr. Hand: "I wonder what's on 4chan right now?"
Mr. Book: "SHUT DOWN THE MACHINES!"
I highly recommend the Director's Cut of this film. The standard cut spoils literally everything in the first two to three minutes of the movie. Either way, it's a fantastic movie, one of my all-time favorites.
Yeah this bummed me out when it came on T.V the other week. My mom had never seen it before and right there it was explained to her right off the bat. Oh well, she still enjoyed it.
This fact has been spoiled by anyone who mentions the Director's Cut, like, ever.
I bought the Director's Cut DVD when it came out, I've never watched the standard cut.
Will get the Director's Cut ASAP. I always enjoy a freaky noir movie.
What’s the difference between the two? Without spoiling it?
The director's cut is the ideal version. The theatrical release added a voice over from the doctor during the opening that spoils the whole movie.
directors cut is awesome
Thanks. I'll remember that
Inception kinda?
This movie is so under rated. A beautiful niightmare. I realize it's always night, but wondered how no one ever asked about children.
Ikr?! They mention them a couple of times, but you never see any. Except for the one creepy stranger, of course.
The prostitute at the automat has one in her apartment. Also when they make the poor people rich their children are asleep in their bedroom.
It's just poorly advertised. For the people that know of and watch it it's always a great movie.
Theres one kid the girl at the murdered hoohaas place under the bed
Bruh this whole city is suffering a severe vitamin D deficiency. The strangers would be lacijg the water supply with vitamin d because otherwise theyd be dying or severely sick
the strangers really remind me of when the Discworld auditors took human form in the thief of time
I thought so as well. Since Dark City came out in 1998 and Thief of time in 2001, I guess that Pratchett took inspiration from the film. That would explain why I felt like I was missing a reference when I was reading the scene in which Lady LeJean was introducing the six new auditors with colours as names.
@@Johannes-br6zn as soon as i read the part where they gave themselves colours as names reservoir dogs came to mind.
I always wondered if the Strangers had actually already found what they were looking for but never realised. The little one who said "Poor, poor Mr Quick" and in the directors cut also expressed what sounded like genuine Empathy for another lost Stranger appeared to have thoughts and feeling of his own that were perhaps sincere. Possibly such positive personality traits were of so little interest to the others they never thought to pursue it...
Somewhat underrated movie. Loved unique feel.
So underrated that for the average moviegoers it does exist. But so rewatchable.
Anyone else getting Hellraiser aesthetic? Makes me think of the Clive Barker book, the one where the detective goes to Hell, meets the Leviathan, etc. Saw this kinda stuff in my head while reading it.
The strangers are definitely a shameless "homage" to Hellraiser's cenobites.
@@j_shelby_damnwird
I would argue they both stole the look from the 1984 Dune and the similar appearance of the Spacing Guild.
@@jsbaker2795 Agreed. They are only missing those vacuum cleaners... 😊

What was your role in it?

It's a good movie, just poorly advertised, I never heard about it until years later because this is the kind of things me and my mom would've loved to see.
@@aelix56 Exactly; same for me. I love the movie, and I think people would talk about it more if it was advertised better. I had never heard about it prior to my big brother recommending it because I never saw any trailers for it.
Went to the theater to see it.
It will be forever a cinematic masterpiece and live in cult film infamy like many others that didn't break the box office.
A favorite of mine, also. It's Hellraiser meets The Matrix meets Metropolis!
Beautifully filmed, great soundtrack, and just about the COOLEST movie trailer I've ever seen!
i dont get the hellraiser reference. other than black leather, it has nothing to do with hellraiser
@@poindextertunes - It's the look and feel of those films. But, tell me they don't all look like Pinhead. 😄
I remember seeing this movie like 4-5 times in the theater as a teen, because it blew my mind back in the day.
Oh my God, this is one of my favorite sci-fi movies ever made!! I was confused by the storyline, but then I realized that the Strangers were aliens that have kidnapped humans and used them as guinea pigs to see how they react to strange and unusual environments, but all hell breaks loose when one Human, John Murdock, wakes up...
yeah but the intro at the beginning of the movie gives things away
It's like a cross between the Matrix and Hellraiser with Tim Burton's Batman thrown in for good measure.
The director's cut has deleted scenes, and removed the voice over narration from the theatrical release . . . .
The reason this movie recorded as flop or not so successful is they had a huge bidget for it, but there was literally nothing for marketing there was basically no marketing campaign on release. This is a great recipe to relegate oneself to the cult classic following like blade runner.
*"NO MORE MR QUICK."*
The original matrix
Exactly. The entire tone and colour palette was used by the Matrix
The archons
Yeah but the story is fresh from the book only thing taken was the color and outfits. That's it!!! the matrix is still wayyyy better because it's relevant til this day. This is just a cool movie
The original bizarro Truman show.
@@sonoisrael4660 This movie is as well. Interesting that Neo was of the 6th "great reset" 😉 . Take care!
The neglect of Dark City is criminal. This movie is a aesthetic and cinematic classic directed by Alex Proyas who also helmed the Crow. I would love to see him do a Batman movie following the mode of Dark City.
Ironically, if the strangers had looked far more alien, people might not have gone for this movie much. AS it is, though, its a great film, and has that eerie film noir era feel from decades past.
I grew up to this movie. So naturally when I became a parent had a kid, I would put my hand over my daughter's face and say sleep from the day she was born. and it was worth it for the reaction I got when she was about 10 or 12 years old and I sat down and watched Dark City with her for the first time.
Epic man, just epic!
That's the most awesomeness thing I heard in forever.

Loved everything about Dark City, awesome cast.
What's this? 3 hours before new year and a great explanation video posted....new year to you man and Happy new year from Kenya.
A favorite of mine as well. Another similar story is that of "Indigo Prophecy", one of the earlier "playable film" games for PC and Sony PlayStation. The plot of that one has many facets that stretch into varying concepts and ideologies but in the end seems to be one of the heavier inspirations for what would become "The Matrix".
As you've pointed out, it probably inspired at least the visual effects of inception and I wouldn't be suprised if the matrix took a bit more from dark city. This is an overlooked gem, the story is not a recycled plot and the effects were petty darn awesome for the time
matrix did take from dark city, it was filmed on some of the same sets that were made for dark city.
matrix was written in the early nineties. i doubt they took anything from this
Amazing review FilmComicsExplained - you are an excellent narrator, this is one of my favorite movies
As always loved the video. Hate that it ended cannot wait for the next one!

Man, I really enjoyed this video. I saw Dark City as a young man, and the twists and turns just blew me away! They kept coming until that final reveal. Your video made me recall that little sadist stranger. He looked different and was a mean, little bastard. What a movie!

I really like this flicker. Thank You, I love your channel and your work.
I think Dark City was one of the best. Great theme and amazing production design. It deserved far more attention than it got.
It has developed a fan following. The reason why you say this is dark city actually had a significant budget itself, however for whatever reasons there was no marketing campaign at all as far as I'm aware. I dont know why, but thats why its not well known and, why it will like blade runner ... develop a solid fan following .

Happy new year bro love the video
One of my favorite films of all time. I always wondered, why do The Strangers only choose the bodies of dead men as vessels, but why not also women? They had at least _one_ child boy as a host (Mr. Sleep) but no women. Perhaps they figured the "Alpha Male" subjects would be better-looking authority figures while blending into Dark City. (Even though they don't blend in well, their dark, creepy figures, their black suits and hats, etc) And also, why do they all have English accents? lol It's probably just because they sound more sophisticated and evil, like most characters with English accents. xD No offence, FCE. lol Great video!
I think it's 1993 when we all still referred to 'Mankind'.
Less female extras wanted to shave their head for the film ;)
It’s not that big of a deal. Just accept it, it’s fiction.
There are women Strangers in the gatherings just they're all bald and with sunken dark eyes

This is one of my fave hidden gems, it also have an hilarious scene where 80% of the exposition occurs and my wife and I still refer to as the “info dump boat ride” in multiple other movies.
That said it is a must see for fans of the genre.

Love this movie
Love this movie, bought it when I was young. Love the gothic atmosphere and how the victim became the hero by the end.
Proyas directed The Crow too!
I was just thinking. Maybe the strangers were the heros ,they were searchijg to better their kind and for individuality to benefit their society.
One of my favorite movies! Thanks for this one!
What's amazing is that despite the hopelessly depressing, dark world, the movie isn't alienating to watch. In fact it's very riveting with the imaginativeness, production design (mixture of 50's aesthetic and Gothic), the originality and of course the great story. The director was wise to sneak in sunny beach scenes (even if they're just quick memory implants) so the darkness doesn't overwhelm. Movies like "The Spirit" and "Sin City" also had dark surreal cities but
I remember when I first watched this movie; I thought it was apart of the hellraiser series. But was even more interested when I got further into the movie and realized it wasn't
why? absolutely no connection to Clive Barkers works

This movie is amazing, I got to see it when it came out in the 90's with a group of friends who went and saw movies every weekend for years. It was definitely ahead of it's time and the buildings shifting and moving ooks fantastic. I kind of wish they had a spin off where batman got stuck here. Seems like his kind of place.
Im thinking its significantly influenced by Gotham vibes, alot of the architecture too, like when you see the buildings move etc

I absolutely loved this movie back when it came out. The imagery and cinematography was great, and the story and overall mood of the film were very haunting- I’d find myself thinking about it without intending to think about it (if you get what I mean). I’d recommend it to anyone with a taste for the stranger and darker parts of sci-fi. It wasn’t gory or over the top evil or anything like that, just more like a Twin Peaks feel- like a kind of “future noir”. Didn’t Alex Proyas direct “The Crow”, as well?
I almost put the cinematography of dark city alongside a darker hue of blade runner and certainly alongside something like batman
