  • There's a movement to take down the statue to controversial former police commissioner and Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo. We talked to Philadelphians on Aug. 17 to see whether they thought it should stay or go.

Keeping the city safe is racist, yo. My wife's son shouldn't have to fear for his life every time he robs a store.

You can move it anywhere you want to move it. History will repeat itself. There will be another Rizzo....are you gonna move that person's statue as well?!

Who cares? Statues are stupid anyway.

Some of the comments by the younger people in this video ( too young to remember) are ignorant of the facts. Educate yourselves instead of just parroting what someone else said. Confederate monuments should be moved, but if you remove every monument of anyone who EVER did anything to offend anyone, there will be nothing left. We are ALL human, good and bad.

If you were more or less a law abiding citizen of Philly when Frank Rizzo headed the PPD and later was Mayor, you had nothing to fear from the police. True "Frank's Boys" could be heavy handed at times, but almost only when you did something seriously wrong.

I wish he was still here for starters, a great guy that did alot for this city...I'd much rather be living in philly back then with frank as mayor then these days ...I am philly born and raised and still here for now....but I cant wait to get AWAY.

Why hasn't the media in Philly talked about the sculpture of activist Octavius Catto that will be reveled on 9/26/17 just feet away from the Rizzo sculpture? Is all this coverage about Rizzo and now the black power pik a distraction? If the Rizzo statue comes down or moved then so should the "All Wars Memorial to Colored Soldiers and Sailors" at 20th & the Parkway, "Phila Stars Negro League" at Belmont & Parkside and the African American Museum at 7th & Arch. How about the sculpture's for Richard Allen,Joe Frazier,Julius Erving and Wilt Chamberlain? There are 1700 sculpture's in Philly, more then there are in Washington DC. I think all the sculpture's should be moved to the neighborhoods where these people grew up in. Tourists come to Philly to see history from the past not today's protests of hate.

Your argument is i like rizzo so if they take down his statue then there shouldnt be a black history museum...
The black history museum never oppressed a whole people and disproportionatly arrested minorities. I get that life was better easier for the italian americans etc. (basiclly caucasion communities) but cant people step back and think how it was for other groups during this time. Tbh i think people want to think that they care alot more than they actually do and when these protests are over not much will have changed :/

Frank Rizzo was no racist. Ppl say that he was because his police force was tough on crime. Yes, they were known to rough ppl up, but right or wrong it wasn't just blacks it was all ethnicities. Rizzo was a Democrat and had a lot of black support, but you never hear about that nowadays. I know lots of minorities who looked forward to Rizzo becoming mayor again. The #'s were in his favor & he would've won too, had he not died. Ed Rendell became mayor by default. Rizzo would've crushed him at the poles.

Well I'm here because I found a news paper clipping in something that belonged to my dad. My last name is also Rizzo. I have no contact with anyone who can really shed light on it for me. But everything I've seen points to he's my dad's uncle. So "great uncle"
Now I know why my fucking nose is so big 🤌 🤌

Think of it this way. If you did something great in your lifetime. Something amazing, but also some bad things. And somone erected you a monument for the great thing you did. Would you be ok of the removal of your statue because of some things that you did.

One of the saddest things today in society is that someone, somewhere, will be offended by anything. It's a freaking statue. Get over yourselves, move on & stop trying to rewrite history. It's sad that in today's society you constantly have to walk on eggshells so you don't "offend" anyone.

The man dedicated his life to the public service of Philadelphia, for decades as a cop, then commissioner, and then mayor. He was voted into office by the people of Philly. As a cop he encountered the worst of it and faced it head on, taking no sh-t from anyone. He was a man's man, a boss. Simply put, if you did no wrong under his watch then you were just fine. I would have loved to have seen this rioting attempted during his watch as either commissioner or mayor, the jails would have been overflowing before the light of dawn. Enough is enough of this nonsense, speak up Philadelphians, ALL Philadelphians! Put the dam statue back.
