Just grab my Quad and SW5 sub today to replace Ambeo Max and Ambeo sub, placement strictly follow Sony guide and done calibration. After few hours listen to them, my current rating is sound quality Ambeo Max 100 Quad 85, immersive Ambeo Max 90 Quad 100. With good placement and wall to bounce the Ambeo will really shine and will understand why Sennheiser think that it’s good enough with the bar alone. Btw Ambeo sub gets much deeper than SW5 sub, but lighter weight, don’t know how to describe it by words. @@neverenoughtech you know what, I actually love the indie music too, not sure why I forgot about that. Then I am weird too, I love movie soundtracks, a lot, it is my main source of music listening.
do you think the quad set up is as good as the sony STR1000 AVR with decent speakers (2 ceiling). Im looking for one or the other and curious if the AVR is still alot better or is the difference minimal and not worth the extra work. Thanks
How would these systems be comparable with dedicated 5.1.2 setup utilizing Klipsch Reference speakers and any of the entry level AVRs like Onkyo TX-NR6100/Sony STR-AN1000/Denon AVR-X1800H?
Went with the Bravia 7 75 inch and the bar 9 /w sub. Perfect setup with use of the zoom 3 that sounds great compared to just going with the quads without a sony tv. Was surprised how much the zoom 3 helped with vocals in movies (not a gimmick)which was a big deal for me! 👍
I came looking and glad I landed on your page. Seriously considering the Q990D. Question is would it pair well with a LG C2? I realise the hand-off feature may not work seamlessly. Or should I consider future proofing my selection with the new Sony Quad?
On the quads, did you experiment with the ‘height of sound field’ setting? Which one did you end up on that sounded best? I feel as though I like ‘lower’ more than the other two despite the speakers even left and right of the tv
Sony subwoofer sw5 is lacking in low frequency bass response. It does not hit low. That excitement during action scenes when the bass hits low will be missing in sony sw5.
How is the dialogue performance of the phantom center channel? Like I have A9 and as long as I am sitting in the center, I can perceive the sound to be coming from the center of the screen. But if I move off-center (a little left or right), I can feel voice coming from the front speaker nearest to my position. Do the quads have the same problem?
I had the quad and loved it, separation is 2nd to none, but should be for what they are. I was able to score the Sonos with 300s for $500 cheaper so I figured I’d give it a try, WOW! In my living space I was able to get a louder system and the Atmos is, in my opinion better. The front separation is obviously not as good with a bar vs separate speakers, but it’s close. Both systems are phenomenal, but like I said, it will depend on the room you’re using the system in. Sorry for the long post. Also, thanks again for reviewing systems that most won’t due to needing to be paid or get a freebie (AR)😂
I’ll just say I own 40 Sonos components - ignoring the current software situation - Sonos has traditionally been on a tier of its own from a total experience standpoint. So not surprised people would like Sonos - I think the sound profile is quite different which will appeal to many. If I had to live by the AR creed, I wouldn’t have many videos unfortunately
I truly enjoy your stuff, I’ve never laughed/chuckled so much during a tech video, and super informative as well. Question: I live in an apartment, the walls are not super thin, but still, I can get a bit paranoid with the sub from my current Q990C. I’m considering buying the Quad, but without the sub, only quad. Do you think that the sound would be satisfactory enough? Like, enough bass without any risk of feeling paranoid when watching blurays? Thanks!
Unfortunately I returned my Ambeo Max due to Dolby Atmos drop out issue and unreasonable low volume on sub after calibration, but really love the sound
@@adamtindal3057 Not really, no. I had an issue with my Apple TV displaying white dots in dark scenes. But I bought the G4, not sure where the problem is as of now. Otherwise, I really love the Ambeo. Even had the A9 1st edition to test here, as well as Arc with sub and 100s. Sent them all back.

Great video my man. I'm going to go for the Quad in 2025 with the next gen Sony QD-Oled 77". The follow-up to the A95L (A95M ?). That will be my first Oled Tv with my first surround sound system. A match made in Heaven. Haha
Thank you! My wife problem with the quad is the look and colour. We blacked out the ps5 as soon as we could. So the quad is not an option. I watch all you bar reviews. Looking for the best bar. But I have a 65 oled Sony A8 . Does that matter on the bar I buy? I’m leaning toward the Sony bar 9 with the s-5 and sub! Your thoughts would be appreciated.
They blend in really seamlessly when wall mounted and look really nice. Black would be too intrusive, although it wouldn't be hard to find a cover to make them black.
I can’t really get a handle on the aesthetics issue … bar 9 would be a strong possibility -- you might also consider the Ambeo plus with sub - that would be a stronger choice I think with just two components … In terms of finding the right system I suggest that you buy a system almost expecting to return it … it makes sense to get some exposure to various bars to get a sense of what works best with your particular ear. Beyond the plus you might consider arc and sub/sub mini / Bose and sub module as well. I think Bose makes the best looking bars
Dragon can go much louder and be more aggressive but it will be more direct sounding down the middle and front heavy. Some people prefer that though. Remember the bar is 147cm wide and the sound will expand beyond that but the quads you can place like double the size of that to 300cm and it will still extend beyond so the sound stage just won't compete with the quads. You also don't have any calibration tools on the Dragon so to perfect it you have to measure things and input the measurements manually and updated also require a usb drive. Don't get me wrong it is still a great device and the clarity will be more dynamic but again a lot more front heavy. Quads as all 4 speakers are the same size, you get the same dynamics and acoustics everywhere. It's more natural and raw sounding which again some people will like, otherwise will hate. It's personal preference though as to what you want. I always state that if you can have the front speakers at least 3m apart then you'll get a better sound stage and movie experience with better balanced rears. If you want sheer grunt slap you in the face, chest pounding bass, then the Dragon will be better.
@@S1mmz thank you for detailed answer, i look for dragon since 2023 CES, I know the part you mention and I'm a senior software developer so I like to deal with those things and tweak things around. 3m is also fine so I think I will enjoy it very much. Quad seems like sounds will very light ~
I spent hours trying to dig up any proper reviews on the Bar 9 before pulling the trigger on one but that was 3 weeks ago and at the time there was next to no info online aside from headline specs. So I ended up going for the 990D which was decidedly cheaper and has, as well all know, a pretty stellar reputation. What I’m really interested to hear from you though is what do you think about the Bar 9 with the SW5 and RS5s in comparison to the 990D??? Do tell…. Did I make the right choice with the 990D or should I have waited for more reviews from the Sony?
Don't waste your money on either one. Just buy an inexpensive DAC that supports HDMI CEC and a pair of decent powered speakers. You'll get a FAR better experience. MiniDSP Flex HT and a pair of JBL 104-BT's, pair of JBL 305P (or bigger), pair of Rokits from KRK, pair of Adam Audio T-series, etc... I get that the price can vary widly and that I'm talking about just a pair of speakers but come on y'all... have a little more self-respect. If your buying an incredible tv, buy some decent audio to go with. That MiniDSP is so incredibly versatile. Granted, it cannot decode any bitstreamed formats from Dolby or DTS. But it can decode lossless multi-channel which is what most content can be delivered with. You also get incredibly powerful DSP. It's very difficult to do better until you spend about 3-4x the cost of the MiniDSP.
Thanks for the video. Just subb'd. May I know if you might put a comparison video b/w Bose 600 and Sonos Beam Gen2? If someone considers dialogue and sound quality ( movie experience) as top priority for a smaller space , which one would you recommend.

If you have a compatible Sony Tv (I have an 85X95J), there is a 7 band equalizer on the tv itself you can use to tailor the sound. Settings>sound>sound customization> equalizer.
music is definitely getting better by the minute (quite literally, because of AI) but i happen to be part of the 0.000001% that uses car as a cd player unfortunately, so i do prefer equipment that can truly present the thrashing of distorted guitar on my favourite punk rock album 😀
Sony made one huge mistake with the $2500 Quad - and that is a embarrassing low 1-year warranty. Don't they have any confidence in their designs/build quality ? Makes me consider an upgrade for my 5.1.2 system instead.
hello out of curiosity does the quads sound good when the speaker placements are not optimal? Since most people probably who buy quads are after the “place it anywhere” feature. 1. small rooms: front under wall mounted tv , rears directly beside sofa 2. Bigger rooms: fronts well placed, rears maybe 1 slightly further than the other and not equidistance from left and right, imagine like the walls are 6-9feet from the back of the sofa
Your review formats are among my favorite. I need a new setup and am considering quad with sw-5 sub vs Sonos ultimate immersive. Not concerned with music, just want to be blown away with impact when watching movies. Which option am i better off with?
Daniel, you have mentioned several times you buy all of this equipment. With the items you are not keeping for the long term, Are you able to return for a refund ? If not, do you sell it ? Is there a way for us to buy it directly from you ? Or do you have a garage tons of "new" equipment ? I would like to know the exact location... just kidding !
Well, I trust your opinions so I'll keep waiting for something else. Would love to hear the quad but I wouldn't like not having a center channel, and Sony subwoofers are very weak too.
I do believe that in most cases, soundbars are becoming better than standalones. This is taking into consideration the convenience and likelihood that a consumer will be much more inclined to use a soundbar over piecing together and wiring a system in a room, not that they outperform a dedicated system. Though, even then, they are getting damn good. That said, two areas soundbars desperately need to step up their game. 1) HDMI ports. While eArc does help, 6+ HDMI inputs found on most receivers is a quality-of-life issue that can be addressed on soundbars. Nakamichi has 3 on their sub $1000 soundbars, that should be the minimum standard. Worse, it seems soundbars are actually reducing HDMI ports. Positioning in cramped spaces is another common problem, and the Bravia Theater Bar 9 is another example of hoping the consumer can cram a cable in the port and hoping for the best. 2) Cloth. Get rid of the damn cloth. Animals tear that stuff up, and soundbars and speakers are more commonly exposed to animals and kids. Cloth also attracts lint like no other. There are definitely more differences, but overall, I recommend soundbars to my friends and family, despite having a dedicated theater room with separates and receiver. Before getting my theater room, I used quite a lot of different soundbars, and a few were very impressive, while the much more affordable 3.1 systems greatly improved TV sound without breaking the bank or requiring rear speaker placement.
Great review! I seriously go to you and LandPet for honest reviews. You guys are brand leg humpers. I want to replace my old 5.1 but Sony Quads is right up there in price in comparison to a new 5.1 😑
I like the idea of the A9 and quad but for the price I could build a decent atmosphere system. I couldn't justify buying that for what they're asking price wise. I agree with what you said about the soundbar too. I heard the Samsung q990B in my brother in law's house and I could tell that front sound was coming from the soundbar without proper front left - right separation. It sounded like the sound is coming from three areas. You just can't beat having two front speakers for left and right sound. Soundbar manufacturers should make it possible to add two front speakers like the rear surround speakers that you can buy separately for their soundbars.
i lurk reddit and the like, and everything people bring up building their own system, they link some equipment that have horrible markup prices in Australia which quickly overtakes the A9 in price. what's with the price of audio equipment here...
The quads can hold their own on entry and some mid level wired systems these days. Might not have the level of clarity but then it's not bad and the immersiveness actually bests them.
I recently bought bar 9 with SW5 subwoofer (there was some discount, so managed to buy both of them new for ~1590 USD in Europe, thought it's nice deal). But the price for SA-RS5 seems a bit high just for 2 years old rears (around 741 USD in Europe). Do you know if Sony has any plans to release new lineup for rear speakers? Maybe it is worth to wait to see what they offer there
Going forward: "Reviewing tech with a funny-AF dry sense of humor" shall be called "pulling a Glaser" 😋 Question: So, the quad units are wireless, but require 120 VAC ... I've installed a 2-gang 120 outlet behind the TV with multiple plugs ... so I'm wondering about saving the headache of running new power to the quads ( drilling, patching drywall, etc. ) ... would it be sufficient 'separation' to install the quads on the wall immediately adjacent to the TV w/ min. cable routing ( resulting separation ~ 7 feet C2C )? Cheers!
Everyone keeps calling my humor dry. These videos are as animated as I get. I would say if you are committing to the Quad shoot for more separation … to get a more dramatic effect. But perhaps you can play with the separation the ugly way (pitting them on stands) and see if you think it’s worth the extra work
Loved the review - wish you had a Bravia TV so I could have your thoughts on the center channel/TV thing. (I have a SONY A80L) Moving to a house with an 18x25 greatroom (9 ft ceilings) open in the rear. What do you think of the Bar 9 there? Thanks again!
Yeah, next on the list should be to definitely add a A95L or a Bravia 9 into the mix. Definitely helps take the quads to an even greater level, especially now that the tv gets included in the calibration and the speakers play in unison unlike the original model where they played independently. While it makes things even more expensive it's worth it if going 3m wide, really does feel like having a dedicated center and allows the fronts speakers to perform even greater.
The Bravia Bar 9 is the ugliest cheaply built piece of shit Sony has delivered in a long time. Dont care what it sounds like, its embarrassing to go from something as beautiful and elegant as the A7000 to that shit 💩 And to think they want more $$ for it…lmao
Have fun trying not to scratch that A7000, I've lost track of how many I've seen on eBay being sold with smashed glass. The Bar 9 is intentionally covered in fabric, it's better for the planet and ultimately the objective of a new iteration of a sound bar is to... sound better, which the Bar 9 definitely does.
Caution for people with poor internet connection.. don’t buy this if you want to use the app, to control with phone, and/or to pass music to the Quad.. Sony will force you to install their poorly written app and open your wifi to them in order to connect to it..
Please review the Sonos Ace TV audio swap - we need an audio expert like you to properly review that feature and weather it really feels like 7.1.4 or just glorified stereo
By the way - I have a Klipsch Core 200 soundbar in a smaller room 12x14 and it sounds tremendous - for a $500 soundbar, have you heard or will you review?
Here’s a head scratcher for you. Love all your stuff. Long time follower, first time question asker:). Say I’m up to my eye balls in Sonos around the house. Love the “speakers in every room”, but wanted to flirt with the Quads as the home cinema stuff and keep the Sonos as the speakers spread out for music. Is there a way to use the Sonos Port on the Quad to incorporate it into the Sonos system? Obviously not smart money wise, but I think you understand that part of the sound obsession/disease 😂
I’d say there probably is some hacky way to do it (a line in port would be quite helpful on the quad) … I’d wait for a Sonos stream box/ port thing with an hdmi port before trying what you described
Wild that you’ve had largely positive experience with the Bar 9 and optional rears and sub vs Andrew Robinson who seemed to absolutely hate it to the point where he purchased two to check his first wasn’t a dud. My experience has been great so far. I think room calibration makes a huge difference to the spatial mapping, I’ve noticed even a slight change in calibration position makes a large impact on the sound.
The quad is better I think we agree on that … I suspect he was more sensitive by some of the weaknesses than me. But I rarely watch other reviews before publishing (and rarely after) so I can keep my independence. I agree that the bar 9 takes some tuning to get it to sound right
What if I don't have enough space to place the Quads for wide separation? Or if there are obstacles near my TV that prevent optimal placement of the Quads? Example, the TV in my room is directly under stairs so I probably only have space to mount the TV but may not have space at one side of the TV to wall mount the Quads as there's stairs in the way. I probably can try to place them in irregular positions but besides affecting the overall look, will it affect the surround bubble that I'm aiming for?
The optimization tool will help bit of you need to hack your way to making it work you should probably skip … they’re expensive and you would want to access the majority of the value … it sounds like maybe the room does not allow for that
Great review! I have the HT-A9 and I will upgrade my tv to the Bravia 9. Was thinking about buying the soundbar 9 for a central speaker. Do you think that it would work together with the HT-A9? Thanks for the support.
There is no replacement to just having more speakers. Having to blast sound to create “phantom” speakers just amps the annoying background music and damages your ears. I feel like the cheapest wired system with a dedicated receiver will beat any phantom speaker effect in terms of crispness and effect any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Simply put, having a speaker on your roof is 10x better then having something trying to blast sound off the roof, etc. as in a $50 speaker on the roof is better than a $500 one, etc..
@@neverenoughtech you are right, I guess I was just frustrated. I appreciate how much info and work you put into sound systems. I am still hesitating between the quad and the Sonos immersive set (Arc, Sub, 2x Era300), as you heard both any comment that can help me choose please?
I think both are quite good choices … Sonos has a less modern profile - maybe a little thicker but I’d say less precise - the 300s add fireworks - Sony the front back symmetry is very satisfying along with the front separation - Sonos has the ecosystem advantage where you can use the 300s and arc separately. By all accounts the arc soundbar is probably less than a year away from being updated. I can’t make this a cut and dry choice for you and be honest
I would say Sonos has a slight edge if you factor in music listening and the ease of use. If you don't have an iPhone you can still use the Sonos app to stream Music from services like UA-cam Music without using Airplay. At the end of the day you might be hard pressed to hear a difference between them unless you have golden ears and are comparing them side by side.
Thank you for your reply, really taught choice in one hand i think the quad is perfect right now but if Sonos bring a new arc and the ability to add 2 more Era300 to the set-up it will be difficult to compete with. Adding the Sonos mess with the application right now i am lost 😅
The illegal is a much bigger sound with nice separation up front but given the price and the superiority of Sony in putting the pieces together - I’d be weary - if you are starting from scratch quad is a safer bet

90s is still widely celebrated 30 years on … I liked indie music in the 2000 - 2010 range as a contrast to main stream at the same time. Though I sense timeless songs after 2000 is few and far between
@@neverenoughtech you know what, I actually love the indie music too, not sure why I forgot about that.

Voicezoom 3.0 is actually real good. You can also lower the voices if you want to!
I suspect it’s good particularly with bigger high end TVs. Thanks for sharing

Yes but probably amongst a bigger comparison

Too expensive as usual from sony!
Probably gonna wait a few years until til competitors offer a cheaper quad-like offerings..
Could you review the Bar 8? I got one to pair with a 55” A95L in a small bedroom set up. Debating if I should add SW3 or SW5 sub.
wow, nice set up. just out of curiosity, could u just hook up the sub to the Bravia 7/9 without the sound bar?
@@michael-4k4000 Need the soundbar
Is it worth buying the Quad if you only have space to place the front speakers on the sides of a 65 tv? Btw why the f*ck i find you funny? :)

Thanks!
If you are moving from the C and haven’t been arrested you should be good. No sub with this system makes me sad but less sad than with the A9

Is the theatre quads better than the Sonos ultimate immersive system?
As soon as I found out how hideous and cheap the Bravia Bar 9 was, I went and bought two Sony A7000 on Clearance. Ya Sony can keep their new garbage
Great video my man. I'm going to go for the Quad in 2025 with the next gen Sony QD-Oled 77". The follow-up to the A95L (A95M ?). That will be my first Oled Tv with my first surround sound system. A match made in Heaven. Haha
Same! But I was struggling to choose between the Quad and soundbar 9 because I don’t have a space behind the sofa it stuck on wall
I just bought Dragon, and it is still in shipment. what is your opinion of which one is better ~ I think Dragon beats all All-in-one soundbar system
Absolutely love your reviews. Keep it up!
Helps to hear!
Should have waited, it's all over now.... 🥲
@@dazzaw4681how do you mean?
Thinking of replacing my non-4k AVR and it's huge speakers with the quad a d new TV. However, I'd lose FM radio, which I still use occasionally.

1. small rooms: front under wall mounted tv , rears directly beside sofa

Well, I trust your opinions so I'll keep waiting for something else. Would love to hear the quad but I wouldn't like not having a center channel, and Sony subwoofers are very weak too.
I was looking forward to the bar 9, but disappointed in what it ended up being.
I’ll go with the Q990D for now.
what is best stand for Quad?
NeverEnoughMoney 😆
When you build one; make a video and show us what you come up with that properly competes.
i lurk reddit and the like, and everything people bring up building their own system, they link some equipment that have horrible markup prices in Australia which quickly overtakes the A9 in price. what's with the price of audio equipment here...
The quads can hold their own on entry and some mid level wired systems these days. Might not have the level of clarity but then it's not bad and the immersiveness actually bests them.
Sony always adds their own tax to their products.
You can get some full range nice towers for the money they charge, I'll say that. 🤷♂️
@@kusakabe3264 you're comparing Australian prices. Everything in Australia is about 50% more expensive.
Maybe it is worth to wait to see what they offer there
Going forward: "Reviewing tech with a funny-AF dry sense of humor" shall be called "pulling a Glaser" 😋
Question:
So, the quad units are wireless, but require 120 VAC ...
But perhaps you can play with the separation the ugly way (pitting them on stands) and see if you think it’s worth the extra work
Grabbed quads off marketplace and saved 700. very happy.

Loved the review - wish you had a Bravia TV so I could have your thoughts on the center channel/TV thing. (I have a SONY A80L) Moving to a house with an 18x25 greatroom (9 ft ceilings) open in the rear. What do you think of the Bar 9 there? Thanks again!
having them 15 feet behind the couch seemed to be the sweetspot for me, tried 25, but ... then I woke up ... ;-)
Voice zoom doesn’t work at all. Have you noticed that on your BTB9?
LMAO @ four carpet samples.
If they put keyhole slots on the back of the quads I could use my current speaker stands.
Is an internet connection required? I hope the app talks directly with the box over my local network without depending on Sony's servers.
Please review the Sonos Ace TV audio swap - we need an audio expert like you to properly review that feature and weather it really feels like 7.1.4 or just glorified stereo
Is the quad better than the dragon?
This is not a simple question - it really hinges on how you value front separation vs raw power and high end tweeters.
By the way - I have a Klipsch Core 200 soundbar in a smaller room 12x14 and it sounds tremendous - for a $500 soundbar, have you heard or will you review?
Yeah want to get my hands on that full system … heard good things
The optimization tool will help bit of you need to hack your way to making it work you should probably skip … they’re expensive and you would want to access the majority of the value … it sounds like maybe the room does not allow for that
Sorry broke boy i couldnt hear you i was too busy admiring all this space behind my couch (im richer than you)
Good for you … I’m tired of all this false modesty
I have to tell you, I tried the bar 9 with the sw5… with a Bravia 8. Unfortunately, I preferred the Sonos arc with sub mini instead. Oh well.
That’s what I have in my (big open space) living room so not that offended

Yet the phantom products exist and people are genuinely interested. That can’t just be dismissed.
Can add a second sw5 subwoofer to the bar 9?
Nope

Would you take the Quad system over the illegal Sonos system you created back in the day?
The illegal is a much bigger sound with nice separation up front but given the price and the superiority of Sony in putting the pieces together - I’d be weary - if you are starting from scratch quad is a safer bet
