Yes why is it that the vegan cream cheese from NYC bagel shops sooooooo much better than store bought vegan cream cheese? I absolutely love the tofu scallion cream cheese and everything bagel from Bagel and Schmear!
Was never a huge fan of cream cheese. I was a toasted sesame and butter kinda girl. Hope one day they put vegan butter in the shops
When I moved to NYC in the 70's I could get a bagel and cream cheese for 50 cents.
Minimum wage was also $1.85. So technically, a minimum wage employee could buy the same amount of bagels now as 50 years ago. Pretty cool.
"In 1968, a full-time worker earning minimum wage could actually support a family of three above the poverty line. Today, that same worker would earn less than the poverty line for a family of two."
Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, Feb. 2014
And it’s only gotten worse for the working class since this data was published. That isn’t so cool!
were many people vegan back then?
@@celinabond None of my friends or co-workers were. There weren't any vegan eateries that I was aware of back then.
I love what you said ab a min into the video, about people being upset with your choices of where to go, thank you so much for keeping it real.
I try! 😝
Yay! Went to NYC at the end of January and we went to Brooklyn bagel and coffee! This video made us feel better that we did not get to try too many places!
Watching this in quarantine from my apartment in Brooklyn and living vicariously through you!!!!
Brooklyn Bagel is ICONIC!!! im so happy you went there, I always take people there when theyre visiting. best bagel in new york for sure.
I've been to Brooklyn bagel and coffee co and they are so legit... I wish store bought cream cheese could taste that yummy
The orange and white tubes are ‘chimneys’. They’re used to keep steam coming out of manholes away from traffic and people walking by
Thank you!
LOVED this video! Please keep making theSe types of videos. They are so helpful especially for someone who is newer to NY! 💜💜💜
Glad I could help!
Shout out to everything bagels, that's my favorite bagel ever! Great vid
Same! And thank you :)
GIRL, an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese is the best combo! That has been my go-to since I was a kid. Also, I love your channel...you are one of my favorite vegan UA-camrs.
Thank you!
this is the content i'm here for - my fave!
Thank you!
Welcome
I’m soooo craving a good bagel with cream cheese now!! 🥯
Omg. I've been so nervous about returning to NYC as a vegan and missing out on bagels with cream cheese....your UA-cam video just changed my life! Thank you
You're so welcome
Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Co is the best full stop. When I go to NY I buy at least a dozen. I feel very validated haha
Bringing it back to this gem 😃
The only bagels I can get in Tacoma, Washington are bagged Thomas’s bagels or Starbucks 😖🤢.. there’s nothing like a NY bagel!! It is the water! NY and MA have “soft” tap water which make our bagels crispy on the outside and fluffy yet chewy on the inside!Nothing better! Great video! 💙
Thanks for going to all the trouble!! Very helpful!!!
This is awesome going to NY for the first time this weekend and haven't had bagels with cream cheese since being veganish
I visited NY recently and was blown away by the vegan cream cheeses at your bagel shops. I’m from LA so I’m used to amazing vegan food but wish I could’ve brought some cream cheese home.
I was terrified you were going to say Brooklyn bagel wasnt vegan! It's my favorite in the city too!
Wow the bagels look so good, I want a bagel so bad now 😩
2020 - The year a UA-cam video of a bagel tour is «super controversial». It´s current year, and we have reached the breaking point. Great video, as usual, super informative and I will be getting a bagel the next time we’re in NYC. The best bagel I have ever had was in «Bagel» in Palma de Mallorca.
the video we all needed
Just found your channel today and am really enjoying your videos. Now I need a bagel, though!
That’s what he said! Lol thanks for sharing. My next trip to New York. I’ll be checking out Brooklyn bagel and coffee Company for sure
@veganbodegacat thanks to you because I watched this late last night gave me the craving for bagel and cream cheese. Thankfully where I ordered from hit the spot. Lula Bagels in Brooklyn New York, Nostrand Ave. I also recommend getting the steam chai latte. Perhaps they can substitute honey for agave.
Everything bagel and scallion cream cheese is the only way to go!
loved this! know which bagel place ill be going to when in the city! thanks!!!
Loving the purple hair !
My go to vegan bagel spot in nyc is Murray’s Bagels!! I believe there’s only two locations that are in Manhattan but they have about 4 different varieties of tofu cream cheese. I always get a toasted everything w/ the vegetable tofu spread and I also add onions, tomatoes, and capers onto it. With all that on it, it’s literally to die for and still inexpensive. I highly recommend 👌
I’ll check it out! Thanks
Black seed bagels are Montreal style bagels which are thin and crispy! Good when you’re craving that, but NY bagels are much better bc of the fluffiness!!
My favorite vegan bagel from New York is from Best Bagel and Coffee right by Madison Square Garden, worth trying if you're ever over there!
I’ve made an entire Yelp album with your nyc recommendations, I really hope I could go one day b/c it’s seriously vegan foodie paradise
8:05 I died a little. I would loooooooooooooooove to have our Greek/Middle Eastern delicatessen stands to have this in a vegan version... whoa! I would get containers and containers, week after week, cream cheese was such a huge deal to me growing up and 12 yrs a vegan has still hunting me for "the real deal"...
Need bagels like this in northern ireland look fab!
this video was heaven
Thank you!
so here for this.
“The CEO of vegan bagels”
Totally agree with your ranking (except I've never bothered with Black Seed because of the honey). Brooklyn Bagel is consistently great. The only other place that does better is Absolute Bagels on the Upper West Side. If you go, just remember they're cash only so don't ask about credit card yadda yadda or you'll get The Look!
Absolute bagel is amazing
Ess-A-Bagel is hands down the best bagel ever🥯🗽
Violife cream cheese hits the nail on the head
M J , really? I love Miyoko’s mozzarella, but not their cream cheese. I tried some from Trader Joe’s and hated it. I actually ended up liking Daiya plain cream cheeze, but have a hard time finding it anymore. I saw Violife, but hesitated. I might just give them a shot!
@@anothernight82 Do it, it's amazing
violife's new garlic herb cream cheese is FIRE
Really good video
Thanks!
the steam thing cools off the pipes etc. below the streets :)
Thank you!
Bagel Shmagel in Bay Ridge has the best tofu cream cheese!!
oh my god I've pasted that smoke stack thing on e 10th twice this week and its so confusing....cars dont know what to do about so they kinda just stop/swerve around it and it makes crossing the street wayyy more interesting lol
Bagelsmith 💚
Kudos to you for shooting outside
Thanks!
I thought you like the cream cheese, because you put some in your hair.😂 You know cream cheese is good when it gets all over you.👍🏾🥰
😂😂
I used to eat bagels but then I saw how diabetics reacted to the flour and yeast combination. I know for a fact that Essa Bagel uses Pillsbury high-gluten flour so I don't know if that has anything to do with it and probably most bagel shops use this kind of flower. I'd like to try a really healthy sprouted bagel and see how that works.
For the average healthy person, gluten, wheat, and yeast are perfectly fine! But if you have any heath limitations, perhaps you can get the cream cheese and put it on bagels from a health food store. I think Ezekiel bread does sprouted bagels!
The Kirk.try frozen
Alvarado street company bagels They only come frozen youll find them in most all " Health Food " markets and some conventional and .Ez.ial ?.the one thst follows this bible phrase naming all the grains
They do have gluten free
Alvarado thst ive tried
They a huge variety..or did
There not a typical N.Y. bagel Ive yet to find one thats like the ones i grew up eating made in a Brooklyn coal basement bakery made by Eastern European immigrants using generational passed down recipes
But I have tried them enjoying then for what they are. You can always try making them Authentically there poached in water with diastic malted barley thats sprouted dried barley ground powder or a barley Malt sryup you can get made by EDEN FOODs very thick sticky dark lasts 4 ever
@@DDios-ih9de I've had those but defrosting and heating those bagels left me wanting something fresh. I wish there was a bagel store that makes "fresh" sprouted bagels or bagels that don't use "enriched" flour. However, I'm not someone who eats bagels regularly, maybe once a year if that. Thanks for the recommendations.
You have to try Absolute Bagels!
Beauriful video, question, do u know how they make the vegan cream cheece? Do u think they make it or trhy use tofutti? Thabk you
I think they take tofutti and whip it up with seltzer
how do you become a vegan youtube superstar, can you upload a tutorial how you got your success, how long it took, your strategy, etc
Maybe when im a superstar. Im not there yet
NYC bagels are the best NJ comes in 2nd I guess cause they're near each other. Lol
NJ bagels are also really good!
Bergen Bagel is my absolutely hands down favorite. So many vegan cc options! SIDE QUESTION, im new here. Have you been to Dromedary Bar or Cocolin in Bushwick?
No I havent!
@@bodegacatx both really good options for vegan eats in Bushwick if champs is too packed. I recommend you try them. Along with Monks in Bushwick too. New to your channel but not new to Brooklyn veg food. I have been here 6 years :)
I like your hair color.
Thanks!
Please go at peace food close to union square and taste their vegan cheeseburger !
I miss your 5$ deals... please do some more...
Probably will this summer!
I always scoop out the interior of my bagel. I like the crust the most.
You are so spot on with your analogies of a legit NYC bagel for it a legit NYC native sorry not sorry
I think pick a bagel has vegan options!
I have never been to NYC before, but now I must go because they serve vegan cream cheese like it's gelato?????! I live in San Diego and the bagel game isn't strong. Would you consider Einstein Brother's bagels any good? I love their cranberry, but it could possibly just be a lump of boiled bread to a seasoned bagel consumer!
It’s been a long time since I’ve had an Einstein bagel. So I don’t remember haha.
And I never thought about our cream cheese being served like gelato 😂 True.
Wait for the first one was there tofu strawberry?.
Dont remember, sorry
Me stuck six hours away from New York wishing I could have a New York bagel 😔
I had the understanding Black Seed egg-washes all of their bagels??? Is this a myth? I haven't had one in forever, please say I'm wrong :)
oops I finished the video haha, not egg-wash - but something else!
They said they didn’t have eggs. But I found out they do boil in honey water. That being said, it was the least yummy bagel so I don’t think you’re missing out.
Commercially made bread is so often is not vegan, it is wise to always check !
Is this list still the same/accurate? I hope they can ship nationwide. I want to some and I’m in Minneapolis
My fave bagels are still Brooklyn bagel co and Tompkins SQ bagels!
@@bodegacatx hey! I’m in Brooklyn now leaving Wednesday and i tried Tompkins. Sadly I got sick and threw it up unrelated because of too much kava or something.
Wondering your thoughts on best bakery in town in general and to get a cake or something? It’s my birthday today and if I can stomach it tonight or tomorrow I’d like to try something. I trust your recommendations. The line was so long for the bagel place on Easter Sunday. It was pretty good
Or just curious your “gotta try this place recommendation.” A friend recommended jajaja and I was also eyeing up screamers pizza. Not sure did you’ll see this in time and no worries if not. I’ll can see about checking out more of your videos.
@@bodegacatx happy Zoe is a place that came up on yelp
Sheese cream cheese is good! Or am I just poor for options down under lol
Haven’t tried it!
Hey, I watched your video about The Ordinary and you might know this by now, but the rash/redness on your chin might be perioral dermatitis. It usually presents around the mouth, but some people also get it around their eyes.
Thats exactly what it was! Im working on it with a dermatologist now!
@@bodegacatx I'm glad you found out what it was! But I'm sorry that it's perioral dermatitis. 😔 I have the same thing and it's not fun. Hope your skin is doing better. ❤️
I've never heard of a NYC bagel being boiled in honey water? But why? Por que? What store bought vegan cream cheese do you recommend? Not a fan of the consistency of Miyokos or Kite Hill. If the texture aint right I'm spitting the shit up like a baby! LOL
I don’t like any store bought cream cheeses. Sorry!
@@bodegacatx i wonder how hard it is to make vegan cream cheese? Hmm
I really like the Trader Joe's vegan cream cheese!! Much cheaper than others. I also like the Tofutti but TJ's is definitely my favorite
KayLove hotforfood has an amazing recipe for tofu cream cheese, it’s super easy and quick
violife 100%
Do you guys not have oatly's cream cheese over there?
Nope!
@@bodegacatx It's my go to. I am not a cream cheese connoisseur so I don't really know if it would rate high on any list but it tastes better than the non-vegan brand called Philadelphia if you have ever had that very similar.
How long have you been vegan for ?
4.5 years!
Have you tried kite hill cream cheese in chive or jalapeño? 😱
Yes! And I think it’s yummy but doesn’t taste like cream cheese
Vegan Bodegacat i feel you! I don’t think any of them really taste like cream cheese but the bagel shop ones definitely get the texture closer like creamier and lighter 😋
Thank you for this video!!! Ppl say i am a bagel snob..but you have to be a new yorker to understand. A real bagel is fluffy on the inside and crusty on the outside...giving you a chewy bite 😋. Cream cheese ratio....she must be thicc 😆 . any thing else is just a roll.
I’m gonna pretend that you said they were boiled in holy water instead of honey water, smh.
What is vegan cream cheese? Does it taste anything like real cheese? If you remember what it taste like
It’s pretty similar if it’s made well!
Not to start any controversy. I know that honey isnt vegan, I get that it is an animal by-product but is there a moral reason for not consuming Honey? I have done a lot of research and knowing that bees are endangered and an essential pollinator for all the fruits and veggies that we eat, I see bee farming as an important part of keeping the bee populations up, giving them a better opportunity to thrive. Personally Ill keep up my plant-based eating while also including locally farmed honey in my diet! I'm actually curious if this is something you have revisited or researched recently since going vegan? Again not here to judge or start fights, I am plant based (vegan with honey) for less than a year so I'm curious
Haha, I wants got called a fake Vegan for researching things like this. LOL people are so sensitive. Honestly, I want to do a lot more research but I think it’s perfectly valid to support places who are trying to conserve the bees. I definitely think eating mass produced honey is not begin but there is a gray area
It lets heat out of the sewer lol
I knew the last bagel wasn’t gonna be good when you opened it. It wasn’t done. 🤮
What’s up with the weirdo standing behind her in that building?
Time stamp: 7:25 was v concerned that he was about to expose himself in the background
sam m me too! As soon as he changed positions and had his hands together I was like wtf..? Then it switched.
@@samm4478 LOL ...I thought same thing.
Omg I didn’t even notice till you guys said something
Vegan Bodegacat so creepy! We care about you and your safety.
the Essa bagel looked undercooked imo... eek no bueno
When your bagel’s anemic 😔
Sad
Somebody should have warned you that blackseed makes Montréal style bagels. If you weren't expecting that kind of flavor and texture I can see it being off-putting.
Consider the absent hole in the bagel a free mini bread roll 😂. And bro honey water!? People will really put animal products in damn near everything. 😒
Miyoko’s is overpriced, but legit.
It tastes good but nothing like regular cream cheese.
Vegan Bodegacat agree to disagree. A little less creamy than Philly (most of America’s standard), but the flavor & cheese tang are spot on, IMO. No after taste of anything else, like I detect with every other grocery CC. - Random side: Use that in Hot For Food’s cheesecake and NO ONE is clocking it! (Use a 7” spring to get that thick, NY cheesecake. Don’t like her crust though. Just veganize a standard graham cracker crust. You won’t need a full recipe, because the pan is small.)
