    The Estate House at Dunalastair is certainly not a castle. It was an over investment that could not be maintained. I lived in the Stables House (seen in this video in the background) as a kid and spent many hours exploring the old place. in the late sixties. At that time we could get right up into the attic rooms (servants quarters, not that they ever got to have many as the house proved too much to upkeep) and into the cellars. It was used during WWII as a refuge for Polish Military refugees and had a map of Poland hand painted on the wall above the fireplace in the main dining room. The ballroom had a suspended parquet floor which if I recall was bought by a hotel in Blair Atholl and the main staircase beyond that big from door was spectacular.. Despite it's appearance, the comment from Nickdurie below is correct. The house was an over-capitalisation which has been left to decay after a more modest Estate House was built on the shores of Dunalastair Loch. Despite all that, this part of the world is certainly worth a visit and there are many other photo opportunities on offer.

      Fantastic information about the place. Whereabouts could I park to get access. I might film it one day and do a cook there, cheers.

      George: my grandfather was coachman there and my father was born there in 1902 - presumably in the stable block. My father used to say that the lawns in the front of the house were always immaculately kept. I understand that there are now holiday cottages in the grounds, although I didn't see any in the video. It's such a shame to see what was obviously such a graceful building deteriorate into such a state.

      Hello. Do you maybe have some of those photos or could draw a floorplan? I‘m trying to rebuild the house in lego, but the pictures I found so far are somewhat contradictory as to what is where. And also don‘t say much about the part of the house that‘s further back. Especially where the stairs are. I doubt there is just one staircase in this whole building. Do you also remember which of the rooms was the ballroom? Many thanks in advance even just for reading my comment. 😊

    How could they let this happen??

    • @straycat1674
      @straycat1674 3 роки тому

      Tyler Tylerson you have to understand that often this happens because families fall on hard financial times. Sometimes of their own doing but often because of outside forces. And when you can no longer pay for the maintenance upkeep or taxes on the place you will lose it. And usually when that happens it goes to a bank or lender or some government branch/organization. They do not maintain and upkeep properties typically. They will let it rot to the ground and then sell the land.

      @@straycat1674 If you are on hard financial times and own that, the first thing you should do is, you know, sell that.

      Tyler Tylerson and that's what many do. But you have to understand many of these castles and castle houses have been abandoned for 70+ years. It wasn't always that simple when they were originally abandoned. We can look at things in hindsight and perfect 2020 vision right now. But when these homes and baronial castles were originally vacated and abandoned, it wasn't the world we have today. You're looking at things a little too simplistically

    Hmm, the old home is looking a little ruff, but... if diligent and collectively contributing Robertson family resources, perhaps we could clean it up... hmm? 🤔 The photographer within me screams, “Yes!!!”

      Jon Hall when you went was the castle pretty easy to get to?
      And are their caretakers who will get me into trouble for going to see it? I don’t want to get arrested for trespassing or anything.

      My father told me that we are of the Robertson family despite our last name being Ralph. This is all I ever knew about it but yet I recall seeing an old photograph image of some family member (I think it was a great grandfather) in front of a giant fireplace. Could it be from this place? My uncle did some research while he was alive and was really into family history and that is how he found this info out.

      I suspect there’s a bunch of us that will find out we have distant relatives. My mom’s mother was a Robertson. Always knew we had ties over there in Scotland. I was even named Scott. I’m in upstate New York in Binghamton. Many of the remaining Robertsons from her family are in or from nearby Greene, NY. Look forward to finally getting to visit over there. Been wanting to do a motorcycle tour, to really see the sights😎

    This was a magical looking castle! I can picture a dragon wrapped around it. ( although it would be a skeletal one now) It is so sad that somehow it was totally forgotten.

    I just today (1/1/2022) accessed this discussion. I know Dunalastair House well. Have visited the ruin several times in the last 30 or 40 years. But, as a child, from age 6 to 8, it was my home (1945-1948). It was then a residential / boarding secondary school for Polish WW2 refugee girls. My mother was a maths teacher there. I was a very young boy surrounded by scores of somewhat older young girls. If this sounds like an idyllic existence, you must be looking at it from the perspective of someone significantly older than 6 or 7 years. But the surroundings and of course the house itself were truly idyllic. I still have some photos of the house as it was at that time.
