- Excerpt from my interview with Ryan Dembroski. Ryan asked about the path from Union College to working for Burt Rutan in Mojave. These first years out of school are an important time for anyone, I feel fortunate that Spaceshipone/Spaceshiptwo and the Nemesis NXT timed so well with my graduation. Mojave is a special place to end up.

"Am I rambling yet?"...
no Elliott, it's music to an Aviators ears.

Glad you enjoy
I think exactly the same about calculus. It's a tool, it needs to be taught for a purpose, not on its own. That's why so many people, including me, are digusted by calculus during college and then find out 5 years later that this equation is used for that, but you can hardly remember how to use it because you did not have this practical example back then.
Well said!
Some sort of practical experience is very helpful before beginning an engineering education. I spent a tour as an avionics tech in the Marines before going to college for electrical engineering. Most of the classes were great because they answered a bunch of questions that I had stuck in my head since technician school! I recognized how this stuff could be a tool to figure out solutions to problems, so it really stayed in my memory. After college, I went to work at McDonnell Douglas designing avionics and satellite electronics. Lots of fun!
More please!! Could listen and learn for hours!
Thanks man
This is the positive, try-new-hard-things mindset that I love in small, focused aerospace programs (reminds me of times at SpaceX). The world needs more of this energy and passion.
Big fan of yours. After 33 years in aerospace flight test, and driving by Mojove every day on my way to work at Edwards, i think the best engineers are the ones that came from the "floor" went to school and then got there degree . Keep it coming love your flight test vids.
Thanks Rodger, I appreciate the support.
Your energy, knowledge and passion are unequalled. Any organization that can utilize your talent is very lucky.
Thanks for saying that!
I'm a big fan!! I only hope you never stop sharing. 8) --gary
Thanks man
Hands down one of the most fascinating and inspirational interviews from 2020 - thanks for all the insight and inspiration!
Thanks for saying that, when are we doing it again?
@@utopiasnow I'll have my people call your people! Let's do it!
Very cool Elliot. I'd love to hear more of the story, especially the Scaled chapter. Years ago, just after I started flying, I went to a talk with Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager (just after Voyager), and was amazed with the things Burt Rutan was doing. He's a "unique" guy, but what he's done at Scaled is impressive. Airplanes are cool!
I agree.
@@utopiasnow The thing that gets me is that there are guys out in the desert OLDER THAN ME building their own space ships...
Of course, the fact that they've been building aeroplanes since I was... FIVE... might count for something. Still. Time and place. Thank you for bringing us along, this is the next best thing to being there.
I need to go back and re-listen to the full interview. So good.
Thanks for saying that!
It’s so good to see your enthusiasm, it really holds our attention. And it allows me to practice my English comprehension as well, it’s so clear, even for us that have English as a second or third language. Nice!
That's good to hear. I can barely speak one language so I have no idea what you are going through.
Fascinating 🧐 looking forward to the next cut from that interview.
Thanks for the comment and the support
Truly Inspirational! It may not seem that way to you Elliot, (because that is just your life, as seen and interpreted by you through your eyes), however there are five significantly important major learned realizations in your compressed concise conversation (not rambelings). A vast proportion of the population might only achieve one or two of these in their lifetimes.
Thanks for the comment. It's nice to think that had value for people.
Very cool. And cool to hear you verbalize that you appreciate the the level of good fortune of being at the right place at the right time. That’s cool. Love your stuff
Thanks Sean!
I am not an engineer but I am building experimental aircraft and I seem to be thankful to people like the late Jim Bede And Burt Rutan who Pioneered experimental world. Thanks Elliott for your contributions. Like all the test flying you do as The Raptor prototype.
Thanks for the comment!!
Flying high....Thanks Elliot...!
Thank you Steve!
Nice interview Elliot. Any updates coming on the Bowers Pony? I love that airplane...looks so cool to fly!
Your timing!! Very soon.
I like the shoutout for the Swift! HNY, Elliot
Woot Woot. HNY Sam
Interviews are cool.
I am glad you enjoy.
I am right with you, my engineering life started with Lotus and Colin Chapman, that gave me the space and resorces to grow in the design world. Like you for me practical problem need to be given for me to solve and then I would fall on the theory and maths to prove the solution.
I am glad some of that made sense.
I grew up in Monroe, MI and went to school at Grand Valley. Did you go to school at RPI? I did a job in Albany over the course of a year and made friends with an aero engineering professor there.
Ryan, thanks for the comment. Monroe isn’t far. I feel like we swam against them in highschool. I went to Union just up the street from RPI. Smart folks in those parts.
By the way. A hidden jem is from eaa 2019 titled 747 something. The first hour is 747 and it's good but the next 3.5 hours are burt and dick Rutan talking and answering questions
Awesome, thanks!!
How would one get to Scaled Composites today? I am trying to navigate my way throught univercity and college in Canada and that would be my dream job.
Its a small company and I would treat it as such. Meaning: I would try to make legitimate friend connections inside the company to build a inside track.
Go military, it's owned by Grumman now
Didn't know you were a Union alum. Go Dutchmen!
hahaha, haven't heard that in a while!
perfect definition of SCHOOL!🤦♂️
Thanks man
This is not a complaint.. but dude you vibrate on a very high frequency..... Hahaha
Then I wont take it as a complaint! Thank you!
Ski Gull? make it happen.
Would be a fun one!!
Please, ramble on...
Hahahaha. Thanks,
Are the successful people out there all on cocaine, or is that their normal behavior? Either way, I could never compete. It reminds me of a big frat party (with no women).
