That's how partnerships work, each with their strengths, weaknesses and the ability to give each other roles to make your strengths greater and your weaknesses diminish. A good partnership is greater than the sum of it's parts.

I absolutely loved Vidic. My type of CB. His presence in the box was one of scary, clean aggression.
Not a United fan but he signed at the end of the Russian (I believe) season he wasn't quite ready yet because of the out of sync situation. Their partnership was definitely highly rated. Agreed they needed each other

A cb partnership with different styles is one that definitely works because they cant be both aggressive on the first ball ,one has to be the sweeper with better reading of the game and clean up if the aggressor misses the first ball.
All these who say Torres destroy him are mostly, not all but mostly kids only score 3 goal in 15 games and Vidic was in the later of his career

Rio joined 2002-03 season.. wins premier league.. next season fails drug test.. United don't win premier league again till 2006-07..
2006-7 vidics 1st full season with United . United win premier league 2006-7, 7-8,8-9, 10-11,11-12..
Of course there were other factors too.. So my point is Rio needed Vida more.. I didn't say one is a better player than other..

Rio was levels above Vidic, better composure, better anticipation, better technique, better leadership, better positioning etc. Rio came in Manchester in the 2002-2003 season. Vidic came 4 years later. Who do you think was the main man keeping the MU defense at the top level ? Rio was the rock there definetely and remained so even after Vidic came

Vidic was more aggressive like rio said,he was a warrior no matter who was the attacker he was ready to put the body just for the team no to get the goal.

No, definitely not, makélélé was a big reason why Terry and Carvahlo looked so good. Add to the fact that under Jose, that style of play made defenders look even better.
I genuinely believe Rio and Vidic will never be topped as a defensive duo they could play to today or 50 years ago. Any era, they were that good and complimentary.

They knew and covered each other weaknesses. It did feel like they werent comfortable being paired with other cbs. also because none of the other defenders were similar to either of them. Their profiles were all over the place if i’m being honest

Rio was better, but people give vidic the props because he'd be involved in more tackles.
Most managers let the lesser experienced CB out to tackle and keep the better defender back to clean up.

The trend was observed with Ramos and Varane though. Varane was superior and he was the cerebral sweeper.
Vidic was a better defender cause he did the dirty work at a world class level, Ferdinand was top player as well but everyteam needs a vidic in their back line

We all forget how much of a liability Rio was - fucking shambles of a defender for years.
I knew Vidic would be a mainstay early on when he blocked a shot with his head while on the ground. Against Swansea I believe. You can't train that kind of resolve. I've also seen him head a wayward shot into goal to score. He was wobbly while celebrating so it was painful.

He had one of the best teams infront of him. Literally so many defenders could have done his job. Same for ferdinand, but tbf he is better than pique and not as many could replace him. If ferdinand was not English, i don't think the sentiment on him would be the same as this

Ferdinand looked a million pound against average and sometimes good teams, but in the tough games vidic would always have to dig in the most and would always have more tackles etc. like he just said “I wanted to clear up at the back” lol.
Ferdinand was a poser. Vidic did the real dirty work.
