Many people pay a lot for Goji berry products when there's a similar native plant nearby. Many species in the genus Lycium have edible berries and they are more common than you might think. In this video we look at the Lycium carolinianum, the Christmasberry or Wolfberry, a Goji relative.
@MrMakeamess I've eaten some, fresh and dried. Dried is better but they are not as sweet as the commercial Goji berries.... though perhaps those have some sugar added... I try to remember to eat more... in fact I may do a cactus video and eat a lot of cactus.
Thank you for posting these vids. I've watched them all at least once, and most of them twice. I've learned alot. Your time and hard work that you put into these does not go unappreciated.
holy crap! this just cracked my mind open I love the salt marsh praries of the glades that seem to have a bunch of this!
Dude, If I ever get in a planecrash, I hope you survive with me. So we can...."Eat The Weeds".
So glad i found this just bought one of these to plant- Florida
good discription on the berry.good close up,nice detailed on the stem, thorn, ect.also showing plant allies, nice, peace
Sweet bike!
Am riding the Blue Ridge here shortly
well as far as popularity, tomato is the most popular member of Solanaceae or the nightshades . followed by potato and egg plant.heck you can even find tomatillo in the grocery store i bet half the people you ask if they know what goji berry is,they would have no idea
Thanks... it's a nice motorcycle, 17 years old, looking good still... it's a PC800.
Nice bike! If you like taking trips on it, go to Prince Edward Island in Canada. Very scenic and I find all sorts of plants growing along the trails there. Black Marsh Nature Trail at the North Cape has some unusual plant life in it. Best time to go is mid june, because of the lobster season being on and is nice and warm.
@EatTheWeeds Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.
Your video's are simply the best
Wow, that bike is awesome. Thanks for the video! :)
"one less car" lol i love that at end!
Better late than never.. glad I found you! You are very cool to do to these teachings ;-)
Thank you for sharing your time and your knowledge. Gracias!!!
@DANGJOS u r right about them being in the same genus but theyre not 100% exactly the same so they might be different as far as health goes. tomatoes and eggplants are related but their nutrition is way different
Thank you for sharing. Loved it.
@otacon451 The requirements vary. They are clearly a niche species. Florida is a limestone plate with a lot of tanic acid on top, and coastly saline. Locally I've seen these in salty alkaline areas.
@tomasbermea the wolfberry and the goji berry are of the same plant genus. goji is jost another name for wolfberry
My Chinese friend made me a soup from the leaves of the lycium chinese (sp ?) , which was her mother's recipe... very good, they consider it a tonic ... I have 4 rooted cuttings from it ...
@RainbowLogic I hoping this summer to ride up to maine and back, doing Deal's Gap in the process and the lenght of the Blue Ridge.
I love some goji berry, i have a bush planted in my backyard, it does ok.
Often plants that naturally grow and compete successfully in brackish or wet conditions will do fine in your yard or garden.
Dude your moter cycle looks like a goji berry. A very big goji berry. Great video.
I believe i have found goji berries not sure if they grow in oklahoma or not but i checked the internet and everything matches but i will not eat them to be sure they are bright red with that little green stem and they almost explode in juice and they have purple and white flowers during flowering and these little red berries poped up now ...
@MajorAssplay Ahhh.... teaching more.... and coming to an off season.... I do have some in the works but I have to wait for the plants....
@flippinrawks Opinions vary. I think it was a wonderfully engineered bike, just right for commuting from class to class all around the state.
@EatTheWeeds The plant, I knew you were in Florida. thanks.
@heyxilong also local library and used book store will have golden field guids.these field guids on noxious weeds, poisonous plants, poisonous mushrooms, ect can be a good start, and is free,or cheap.remember most plants go through growth stages that make them look very difernt than any picture may look like.if you only forage or bioassay with your left hand you will have 50% success.good luck, peace
Very good information. Thank you for sharing
@MrAthanz The PC800 is the best engineered most misunderstood motorcycle ever made. I love it. As for Goji... I have a more utilitarian view: Is it good and is it good for me?
@cazybeast2 Thanks, it gets 55mph, 800cc', five forward, two up. Some riders get 250,000 out of them. I like it a lot.
@heyxilong Steve Brill is in NYC and his books should be good for you.
@EatTheWeeds oops sorryshould have mentioned that...Im in Connecticut...thanks for the quick reply.
If you are referring to my newsletter. The subscription automatically expires if you don't open more than four issues in a row (because I pay for the mailing so sending it to people who don't read it is a waste of my money.) It could have also gone to your spam filter.
yes, see my video and related article on Usnea.
@tomasbermea Some presume so but we really don't know. Some lab has to test them.
Sorry for being off-topic, but WOW! Nice bike and matching suit!
@denergy2307 Thanks... that is the point of them... to help folks learn.
Hello G. Dean, Long time follower first time caller so to speak. I have a bush in my back. Live in Jensen Beach East Coast. Berries that I was told are Christmas Berries. After seeing your video I Think I was given miss information. Berry is about 1/2" at its largest. Has many ribs like star fruit just more and rounded.,with one seed inside. Red Berry. I have eaten then and never sickened from them. Thank For any Information.
Sounds like a Surnam Cherry.
@FatGuyWithAKatana Then your dentists know what they are doing. The PC800 is a wonderful bike. It was so well-thought out. I ride it a 1,000 miles a month year round, on average. Plus I'm 40 years past the age to ride a "sportsbike.' Way too uncomfortable whereas the PC can do 700 miles a day without out any aches or pains. As for the local Florida squirrels, I eat them all the time. Haven't seen a parasite problem.
@gaiagale Skin, clean, cook. The Roman's considered dormice a delicacy.
Do you know? The nutritional cost of wolfberry juice is easier for the body to absorb than wolfberry fruit.
@STCL24 I was in Port Orange Florida.
nice bike!
@sethzky77 what state am I in or the plant? The plant grows in the gulfcoast states and South Carolina.
I have seen these, thanks
@EatTheWeeds Oh! Where in Port Orange? I'd like to try them.
@electricblue7 They're edible, too.
I also thought the berry you see in Christmas ads was the "hollyberry".
Love the video! Nice plate lol...one less car hehe.
Eattheweeds can you do more videos? like on bugs and other things.
@skate4theherb yes go to his website!
so is there a good book, that maybe i could pick up and start learning about to eatting wild plants or weeds? i would love to learn the skill of knowing what i can eat around my area. or maybe a web site?
where were u on vacation? also i always wanted to try a Goji berry.
1LesCar, LOL. These are such cool vids: glad I found them. I just got a L. barbarum and was wondering if you could tell me how to pot it up (it's very hot here need to be able to move it around out of 115 degree temps). I've Googled and Googled and it's all conflicting: use regular potting mix, regular potting soil with lots of peat (don't want to use peat though), DON'T use anything like those or anything peat-based, use just dirt out of your garden (yeah, right), etc. The ground here is kind of a hard clay, which I don't think anything short of a cactus would grow in without amendments--and maybe not then. Do you know how I can grow them in containers or can you point me to a reputable source who might? I didn't see anything on your own site about actually growing them--maybe I missed it? Thanks for any help you can offer. :)
do the wolfberries grow in the New England area? btw: love the bike, it's in great shape!
@Crius11 Study... academic papers, ethnobotanical publications, native cultures, and occassionally foraging books.
any idea if they like alkaline soils, too? im almost completely sure thats what goji's need based on some google reasearch (not direct experience)
Besides watching your videos..is there a book (with pics) that the commoner can carry to identify the edibles and poisonous?
Dean, if you put "goji berry" or cousin of goji berry" in the title this video would wrack up tooonnnneeesss of views over time.
@heyxilong Maybe... depends where you live.
"...stuff a rat..." I think I'll try that.
@skate4theherb First what area?
@uglyguitarman Did them long ago... and I have a class coming up in Gainesville...
@iamjeeves And that means?
I am not getting the emails like I used to. Did I do something wrong to get bumped off the list?
Where can find this ?Were is the place ?
@hilton6357 Of course..well, not pet rats... but field rats on occassion... squirrels are better, though.
do they have the same health benefits as goji berries?
I thought the wolfberry and gojiberry was the same?
Int dad has one Goji Berry bush in the backyard... they taste kinda gross. It's an acquired taste I guess.
what was that last plant around the fire ants i was having a hard time understanding
?
Great piece, it's one we don't have in my area, so it's nice to learn about it. BTW, I have a new app, WildEdibles by "Wildman." I'd love to find out what you think about it.
Happy Foraging!
"Wildman" Steve Brill
PS You might want to try moving the camera around less next time-it's a little dizzying to watch, but, again, great info!
what state is this in?
@zuditaka never seen them.although they look just like alot of random berrys, like salmon berry, ect.anything the usda says is a well known lie.the only thing i reconized is the buttercup, well known medicinal, good for flavoring rats,ha.also the horsetails he named are not like my of my local horsetails.they are flowering now.of course there is even hedges here that are christmas berrys, red, even, but i dont think they were the same.peace
@tesla10k The very northwest end of Spruce Creek Park
I was always leery of those berries when I was a kid, Wouldn't go near them. I was sure they were poison. lol
eating dried wolfberries right now, do you think the seeds from grocery store wolfberry would be viable for growing?
You can do this easily. The seeds are viable for a long time. I have started many wolfberry seedlings this way.
@gaiagale Rat ...squirrel... not much difference.
what states are the lycium berries found in the americas?
Green Dean says the Lycium carolinianum, aka Christmasberry, grows from South Carolina southward to the Gulf states. Other species are native to upland regions of Texas, Arizona, California and surrounding states. In Hawaii, yet another species is called the desert-thorn, apparantly.
@zuditaka i would bet my life on the fact that indinginous peoples definatly ate those berries.of course.all plants and every product has its use.all indinginous peopes do not go to walmart, they make there everything, food, medicine, hoouse, weopons, ectall the same .one animale could be all they need to make allthose difernt things.they knew how to use everything available.could you imagine not ever eating the food in fron t of you?of course they ate this berry.and used every part of the plant .peac
Is that a goldwing?
It's a Pacific Coast 800, kind of a goldwing lite.
very cool, looks nice!
Do you also eat rats?
Noticed that ants get into my medicinal plants/weeds. Was trying to propagate wild lettuce at home that I found in the forest and ants just devoured the sap!!! Killed the only wild lettuce i ever found 🤓 they also, eat my other plants, I let them, so much anyway ❤🙏
stuff a rat?
WAIT WAIT WAIT! Stuff a rat!?
I was looking in the comments to be certain I heard that right.
Berry is the food medicine of the body magically, for the good and alertness of the brain, hopefully .May I try pls...a
@skate4theherb eattheweedsDOTcom

There probably bittersweet nightshade/solanum dulcamara there poison dont eat them there look alikes
