Nice tree ornament, Ed!! When I turn these birdhouses, I typically use a tennis ball on the unsupported end and apply a little pressure with the live end on the ball. For me, using the 60 Degree live end invites trouble since I always seem to split the wood by applying too much pressure. The tennis ball in between the bird house and live end eliminates that problem. I like the way you turned a finial with the same block of wood. Lots of turners will turn a finial with a different type of wood. To me that is too much trouble. Your way is simpler and looks just as nice. For the perch of the bird house, I will go out in the yard and find a small portion of a tree branch and fit it into the drilled hole. To me, this looks better than a tooth pick and looks a little more rustic. But, go with what ever floats your boat.

Teacher used this technique. I am not able to make my caps fit..so far i have 5 bottoms, 3 tops.
