Nice work! Consider since you are in England to go to Vibration Free who balance assemblies as well as sell a much needed upgrade to the dampener. They call it the sterling dampener.... It's they own design, engineered in house. These long inline 6 BMW's need all the vibrational dampening they can get.
I didn’t know about this company, it’s local to me too. However I have taken my components to a race engine builder who has a great track record of dynamic balancing. I will look into this
@@BadE30 They are famous for their F1 and many other motorsports balancing. Most importantly is considering gettin rid of the OEM balancer. As mentioned they have theor own that is far superior. Good Luck
Nice work. Your oil pump looked nasty. We've just stripped a Morris Marina GT engine (not exactly in the same league as an S38) and that had some nasty pitting and wear. New oil pump for us too.
@@ALKUKES if you look in my video there is large scratches on the external bore of the rotor, and pitting on the inner rotor. If you don’t have any of this then you’ll be fine. You can measure the bore of the housing and compare it to the external diameter of the rotor, it should have a clearance of around 0.07mm
@@ALKUKES this is my first ever car restoration, but i am self taught. I’m a mechanical engineer as a day job which has gave me a huge boost, mainly using those skills to do what I do. Happy to help as I’ve learned the hard way at times!
Easy, but very expensive! But yes all new timing kit going on, everything will be new, the timing kit including chains, tensioners and guides is about £800!
@@BadE30 Yeah - not cheap, but totally worth it. The single-row (older M88) stuff is even more! I converted my M635 to dual-row - saved a few $$ and a bit more peace of mind.
This honing was to remove any scoring before measuring. Once honed clean, the bores were way out of spec, currently with a machinist who is reboring for custom over sized pistons
Nice work! This engine is really gonna be what makes this car stand out!
100% man. Feel like the car now deserves the engine😂
Nice one Liam!.. that gold against the green is really going to pop!.. you'll to get a clear perspex bonnet ! 😂
Can’t wait to see it in the bay once painted!
Regarding the bonnet, I may have a plan to have a chopped one for shows😎
@@BadE30 perfect 👌
haven't watched the video yet but I know it's gon be good
I hope it’s worth the watch!
Great video Liam
Thanks Logan!

Yeh not worth saving, too much of a risk! I don’t want to buy new though, found a good used one with pictures confirming condition
You be spending some good money on this engine im doing same thing, whats wrong with your oil pump?
Yes unfortunately so, but it will be worth it. The oil pump has damage from metal fragments, so it will not work as efficiently
@@BadE30 how can you tell just opened mine cant see any visual damage was wondering how can you tell?

Nice, should be a decent motor once its together. Just interested to know where you picked up the measuring tools and which brand you used ??👌
Thanks! Yeh very excited for it. They’re Moore and Wright from Machine DRO. Not cheap, but cheaper than the really good stuff!
Hi mate have you managed to get oil pump parts if so where did you get them from cheers
All the internal parts are available new from bmw! Unfortunately my housing was badly damaged so I have acquired a great condition second hand pump.
While it's easy, I assume you're going to replace the timing chain guides?

I have that engine in my e28! 😎
Cool as! Lucky man
Did you get the cylinders bored before you honed them ???
This honing was to remove any scoring before measuring. Once honed clean, the bores were way out of spec, currently with a machinist who is reboring for custom over sized pistons
Hi mate where did you get the pistons from I need to get a set for my m5
They’re CP-Carrillo custom size and CR pistons from VAC Motorsports in the USA. Were around £1200 IIRC
And how much did you pay for pistons
S38s are known to be REALLY heavy, and its just resting on a plastic basket. Wtf
Face reveal!
