Man... sometimes I can't tell if the sound effects are actually from the game or Flophouse interpretations but the Goofy holler and Hannah-Barbera sounds are just *chef kiss*
Finally, an appreciation for the genius that is War Gods. The best part of the game is the unique variations for many of the fatalities on different characters, like Pagan's fatality not working on Tak since he's already made of stone.
This video has the same energy I did when I would go to my friends "I got a cool video to show you!" the cool thing happens, they turn to me "...so, when does the cool thing happen?"
This, Mace: The Dark Age and Dark Rift were frequent rentals for me. My local small town 2 screen movie theater had a Mace cabinet in the lobby well into the 2010's.
I actually like this game. And if I was going to write a story mode plotline for a War Gods Reboot if one happened, I'd keep it to were Vallah is the lead central heroine who goes out to try and find other Orb users and stop them either through peaceful means or beating the ever loving crap out of them, killing them if she has no other choice or is out of options, in an effort to protect her Icy Domain ultimately leading her to fight Gor and Exor in order to save the Planet when she discovers that there's a bigger threat that threatens not just her domain but the entire Earth. And before anyone asks yes during the marketing/promotion of this game for both the Arcade release and console releases including both in gaming magazines and TV spots/commercials Midway was pretty much making it clear that Vallah was to be the game's poster girl, and lead protagonist.
This is pretty much how I feel about Sonic The Fighters/Championship. I know it's nothing special, and in some ways not even a very good fighting game, but god damn I love it.
I would love to see the game's poster girl and canonical lead heroine Vallah(During the marketing of this game both Arcade and home console Midway was basically pushing Vallah as the game's poster girl and canonical lead heroine/main protagonist) in MK1 as DLC character heck her MK1 moveset could be a fixed up version of her moveset in this game including cyrokinetic moves since the lore states that Ice was one of her domains with her Fatalities being a fixed up version of her Viking Funeral Bed Pyre Fatality and a new one that is Cryokinetic and keeps the Viking motif as she summons Ice Pillars that lift her opponent up by the arms and legs and then proceeds to kill said opponent by giving him or her the Viking execution method known as the Blood Eagle aka Vallah uses her sword to slice her opponent open via the mid-section to expose the rib-cage and lungs and then proceed to get the lungs out via having the lungs go through the rib cage with her bare hands.
Holy F*ck! This is where I got "I kill you and I take your power" from. I still own the n64 cart of this and spent many an hour in my youth warring gods.
First a war gods video next Mace the dark age The list of games for D-EVO grows love seeing matt play his favorite games and learn cool things about them
War Gods is one of those games that ive always wanted to play as a kid (bc i was on a Morral Kombat high) but never got to because i was…well…too young. closest i got was having a poster of Kerri Hoskins in a swimsuit-like outfit of her character from a Gamepro magazine that is lost forever 😐
As a fighting game, it feels pretty frickin ratty, but there is something so quintessentially 90's about this and games like Bio Freaks, that I can't help but have some affection for it.
I had this on the PlayStation. The mom and pop rental store in my town let me keep it for $10. Owner told me "Keep the damn thing, you're the only renting it."
They had this game and Ehrgeiz at my university's campus arcade. I played it and Ehrgeiz a couple times and didn't hate either of them, but usually I'd only bother with them if the Power Stone cabinet wasn't available. Power Stone was my jam back in the day.
Having now watched both videos (Max's and Matt's) I can say that this game looks like something i'd have eaten up as a youth, and looking back on it seems just as hilariously stupid as mk4 was for me (which i had on 64 and still quote the endings to this day: "arright" and the smug giggle). Let's see this game remade in Unreal 5!
With your tangent about loving characters like Anubis, you should rank all of the characters of that motif by ascetic only. Menat, Anakaris, Anubis, Eliza (Skullgirls), Alsion III (Breakers), Ramses the III (Eternal Champion)....Titi (actual name) from Martial Champion...
That light up 3D button on the arcade machine got pretty warm with the bulb on non-stop. It was great during winter when I was a kid. I'd reheat my hands when I got in the arcade, then go play XvSF or Plasma Sword.
I remember buying War Gods used from Blockbuster as a kid for the N64. Good times! What about Bio Freaks? I still have it for the N64 but haven't booted it up in ages.
Max doesn't like War Gods?! Sounds like a cry for war (gods) to me! War Gods is super nostalgic to me because console was a luxury when I was a kid, and my cousin used to have an N64 and he had like 3 games on it. War Gods, Super Mario 64 and Pokemon Snap. So when we booted this up and he performed a fatality, my kid mind blew up.
War Gods is probably the only fighting game ever (apart from _MAYBE_ Killer Instinct) that is great solely because of its presentation. The voice of Exor, the various musical cues and sound effects, the meatiness of the attacks and so many other things make this game feel good to play. .
I'm with ya, War Gods is a special boy of a game. Certainly not good, but it has charm. If NRS suddenly said "Fuck it, War Gods 2", I'd be there for it.
Oh man, nostalgia! I remember digging this game out at friend's in the early 00s when we were bored and looking for something different on the N64 (probably after their PS2 was being super fussy again) and we had a blast and it made it into our semi-regular rotation. We'd never just say "wanna play War Gods?" though, you had to say it in your best announcer imitation. "Let's play WAAAAAR GODS!" It wasn't the sort of game we'd play for more than like, an hour and a half at a time, but it was funny and cheesy and sometimes that's all you need.
I don't remember where I was because it was so long ago... but I got to see these War Gods arcade cabinets being built. It was pretty awesome back then.
This game was at my cousin's place and I played it over that one 3D N64 Tetris game because puzzle games like that tend to stress me out once they speed up. Anyway, my first choice out of the roster was Anubis, since even when I was in elementary waaaayyy back when I enjoyed me some Egyptian mythology. That said, though, I have never been good at arcade fighters and just mash'd buttons. So that ""playstyle"" didn't mesh well with the character. But it sure worked with Tak. Small me pretty much Hulk smash'd through the game until I got tired of losing too much at one of the green guys. Don't quite remember if it was the final green guy or not, since it is some 20+ year old memories from the only time I played the game. "War Gods" is tons better than "The Uncanny X-Men" for the NES if you ask me, though. Since "War Gods" is at least playable and won't put you to sleep. It's also better than this one Sega Genesis "Barney the Dinosaur" game that would start playing itself if you left it idle for too long. Kid me got real tired of that Barney game real quick, broke out of the room I was gated in, and found the SNES in another room of my Aunt's place that had "Mortal Kombat 3" in and played that instead. lol
If it is possible Matt, I hope you can talk about Fighters Destiny 1 and 2 in flophouse plays, I say this because those games DO NOT deserve a Worst Fighting Game episode, Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE DOPE!
Oh man I kinda remember the lore of these characters from the old Nintendo Power issue feature. They’re all historical figures that find a piece of Ore and become gods of their time. It’s a cool concept, shame WB are IP hoarders.
When this game was new, an arcade was hosting a tournament where the prize was $1000. Remember practicing with this game, MK, even Toshinden. Day of tournament, couldn't concentrate, the arcade got Virtua Fighter 3 on a 60" screen. Huge crowds around it. Eliminated first round in War Gods. Thanks Sega. Went promptly and started playing VF 3.
tried to play WarGods in arcades a million years ago, had no idea how to make Anubis trap someone in their neon blue floaty pyramid. cause that was a ballin move as far as my tiny child brain was concerned
As a kid I always thought of War Gods as 'Spooky Mortal Kombat' in a way. I have a soft sport for War Gods, but I'm also deeply fond of the Toshinden franchise, so to each their own. Keep up the awesome work Matt!
I think Fighting Layer is an interesting little licensing oddity from Arika and Namco that's worth a second look. All signs say incomplete, given Arika's relationship with Capcom for the EX games it's surprising it even exists
If there's ever a new MK game maybe these characters should return, or be like dlc guest fighters that reuse some older dlc moves and recreate new ones base in war gods. like CY-5 and Warhead you can give them a remix of Robocop and Terminator moves and recreation of their original moves and better redesigns.
I am imagining an alternative ending for "Gladiator", where Maximus kicks Commodus so hard that he flies away from the Colosseum while Maximus screams: "I killed you and I taste your power".
Been watching your Worst Ever series lately and i just want to say thank you for these War God videos. Its nice to see someone appreciate them as much as i do. War Gods was epic.
all the time here i was like "damn this just reminds me of Fight of gods" and then WHAM! you mention it xD that one is always a good laugh to play trough
I played the arcade version when I was about 13-14 years old and even I remember the "Big 3D button". I own the PS1 version and the weird part is that it doesn't seem to play on the PS1 yet it will play just fine on the PS2 and my Backwards Compatible PS3.
I’m pretty sure War Gods was the first fighting game I owned, I asked my mom to get me a new N64 game when she went somewhere and brought this back which for some reason was not in a box but one of those cases you need scissors to open(you know the ones) why I never did beat the game me and my sister played a bunch of multiplayer with it
the way Matt has nostalgic bias towards this game is the same way I have nostalgic bias towards Clayfighter 63 1/3 I played so much of it and I could never hate that game!
I actually did like this game. In fact I have mapped out a gods vs robots tattoo sleeve planned and one of the battle is Anubis vs a sentinel and I want anubis' attack to be from this game...
First, 1. Neither are good, but Pyron is the better of the two. Secondly, I would like to see someone make a purposefully lame and ridiculous fighting game, with a modern fighting game budget. You do see things like Chavez Fight for the Genesis, but I'm talking a C- fighting game with a AAA budget. Bring back Way of the Warrior!
Hahaha! I love it. I worked on this game and got fired off it before it was over. Hence I wasn’t featured in the Arcade’s cheesy photo ending of developer nerds. Love the fact you’re into it. F’n hilarious video. 😂
Back when i got my N64 i rented, one by one, every game available in the video store. Poor impressionable early teen me played War Gods and thought "So realistic! Games can't get any better than this" Yeah, well... I was young and impressionable. Still, enjoyed my two days with the games quite a bit, it's one of those N64 games that actually make me feel all comfy and fuzzy. Not a masterclass on fighting game mechanics (basically a clunkier MKT) but still enjoyable.
I know this game was clunky but, the music is so great voodoo and Anubis has great stage music. I also love the combos. They should just remaster this and try again as a test
I have much nostalgia for this game because I used to play it all the time in the arcade.. warm oversized 3D button and all, haha BTW if you are playing the PSX version that would explain the janky polygons on the models because the arcade version wasn't like that.. it was also sharper in general and the gameplay was relatively smoother from what I remember.. I used them a lot especially in the arcade and the sidestepping was useless in MK4 IMHO
Dude I played this one a bunch as a kid, and over the years have heard so often just how terrible it was and resigned to the fact they were probably right, but seeing this reminded me just how much of a soft spot I have for this game. And even coming back to it now there's still nothing out there (that I can think of) quite like Voodoo's fucking awesome design... Or the sheer power of the line "I kill yu and I take yo'r powuuhr." Huge. Also, 14:42 got me to laugh way too hard and idk why
Man... sometimes I can't tell if the sound effects are actually from the game or Flophouse interpretations but the Goofy holler and Hannah-Barbera sounds are just *chef kiss*
*When* Mr. McMuscles wins the lottery and buys the IP the reboot needs a cartoon sounds cheat!
@nemo pouncey And yet was superior in every way. Interesting.
Finally, an appreciation for the genius that is War Gods.
The best part of the game is the unique variations for many of the fatalities on different characters, like Pagan's fatality not working on Tak since he's already made of stone.
Omg its the killing floor Half Life guy 🫵
I unashamedly loved this game enough as a kid to LARP it at elementary school with friends XD
Max: "Poverty fighter is POVERTY!!!!"
Matt: *immediately dives to the sidewalk for a loose change of a game*
This video has the same energy I did when I would go to my friends "I got a cool video to show you!" the cool thing happens, they turn to me "...so, when does the cool thing happen?"

Great... Now I have to dig out all my N64 carts because I think I have all 3...
Mace and Dark Rift were honestly pretty neat for the time. Mace might have been the most competent of them.
Honestly sunk many hours into all 3.
I actually like this game. In the musical department, Warhead and Grox's themes are my favourites. In fact, I use Warhead's theme as my ringtone.

Really good memories of both this and Bio Freaks on my N64, to be honest. Rented more than a few times as a kid. I regret nothing.
I always love knowing when Bruno is on the operating table for one of your videos

I had this on the PlayStation. The mom and pop rental store in my town let me keep it for $10. Owner told me "Keep the damn thing, you're the only renting it."

This was a staple of my sleepovers as a kid
Bet you didn't have many because of it.
10:41 Great, now there's gonna be a "which Simpson the YVG doods are" discussion.
18:51 Boon just later reused it in MK9 for Jax's fatality.
Having now watched both videos (Max's and Matt's) I can say that this game looks like something i'd have eaten up as a youth, and looking back on it seems just as hilariously stupid as mk4 was for me (which i had on 64 and still quote the endings to this day: "arright" and the smug giggle). Kabuki Jo, Vallah, and Voodoo were my mains back in the day. I got this bad boy for 10 bucks on the N64 and played the crap out of it.

Think it'd be hilarious if they made that as an excuse to test a new 3D fighting game engine
If the War Gods universe is merged with Bio Freaks and Mace The Dark Age, they could unexpectedly have gold right there.
1. Definitely on Team Pyron
My experience with War Gods was...well, I was very thankful that Electronics Boutique took returns on N64 cartridges.
Oh man, nostalgia! I remember digging this game out at friend's in the early 00s when we were bored and looking for something different on the N64 (probably after their PS2 was being super fussy again) and we had a blast and it made it into our semi-regular rotation. As for jank fighters, I remember 20 years ago I rented something for the N64 called FIGHTERS DESTINY. We had no idea how it worked.
The end boss death animation is actually really awesome looking...

Kerri Hoskins isn't a queen! She is a GODDESS!!! How dare you Matt! ;)
If it is possible Matt, I hope you can talk about Fighters Destiny 1 and 2 in flophouse plays, I say this because those games DO NOT deserve a Worst Fighting Game episode, Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE DOPE!
I agree!
Who the hell would even consider those as candidates in the first place?
@@smeehee People who didnt liked the N64 and are closed minded? :)
Also... I just find out that Flying Dragon has a PS1 version, but I think it only released in Japan and its named: Virtual Hiryu No Ken
I haven’t even watched yet; I saw the title in my feed and broke out in a huge cheesy grin.
Max is right about this game.
There I said it!

Kabuki Jo was my favorite character to play as in this game.
Eventually someone put max in his place, good job matt on correcting the record on them fatals.
I like how the entire time your opponent’s name is hidden by Press Start in an attempt to make it look like an actual arcade game.
Even UA-cam is confused by this game saying it's Mortal Kombat 1. Like what?

For Maximus, the tiny net is like a death sentence. It's a net... and is tiny.

I couldn't handle the Hanna-Barbara SFX's that were going on in this game lol
Yes! I feel the same way about War GOds. Awesome review.
The War Godz announcer is literally 90% off the appeal of this game. He’s far too good for the rest of it.
