I know the original is by Colourbox, but as someone who was obsessed with This Mortal Coil, I immediately recognized that he was recreating the TMC version. It was a nice little win, hearing a song I loved (and still do) on a late night show. I just happened to have this on (rarely watch tv) and then I see this. It was a pretty magical moment.
The Coulorbox version has stuck in my head for decades. I'm both a Beck and TMC fan, but for me the original is much preferred to this or TMCs mellower takes. But hey, the fact that this tune lives on and is covered by so many is testament to the original's sly genius.... Simple chords and melody that were strung together beautifully.
He fled the music industry for a secluded hideout in New Mexico. I've had the occasion to chat with his brother Perry a couple times. Ivo's fine, but has no interest in ever making music again for public consumption.
This has been covered many times since Colourbox first released it, this 'version' copies This Mortal Coils reworking, credit where it's due.
I remember this Colourbox song...originally from 1982, re-released in 1983 and then covered by This Mortal Coil, all versions released on 4AD.
The song wasn't "inspired by the movie Roma",it was written decades before.
Correct, it's Colourbox and it would have taken 3 seconds for them to acknowledge it
I know. Love this song by colourbox and then by this mortal coil!

Good eye!
I see the female vocal from the bird and the bee
And Leslie Feist too!
And absolutely no mention of Colourbox. Shameful.
This is from This Mortal Coil lp - Filigree & Shadow

Same. Cheers.

I love the original version from Colourbox, and love twice This Mortal Coil version. By the way, where's Ivo Watts-Russel?

I love this version of this song!!! SO AMAZING
Wonder why he sang decisions lie with "foolish" men, when the original is "stupid".
Overdone and far inferior to both the original and cover by This Mortal Coil.
Indeed. It's such a poor copy of that version. Between Colourbox and TMC I don't think we need another version.
And lame compared to the original. TMC's cover version was almost exactly like this. So much for Beck being original. NOT.
I just now found another reason to hate BECK!
adds nothing, drums are lame sorry
God damn it people like to complain about everything online. This is a wonderful cover. I think it's the best version of the song.
