    It still makes more financial sense than renting.
    I've been full-time since college (3 years), and my trailer cost just shy of $40k.
    A single bedroom apartment at $1200 a month is almost $44k.
    So not only have I spent a little less, but i own my home and go wherever i please when I please.
    Now you have maintenance and things always go wrong, just like a house. But as long as you stay on top of your maintenance and don't ignore problems, then it really isn't that expensive and you have a mobile house for the next 15 - 20 years at least.
    Currently working a corporate job remotely, but they drain your soul from you at 80 -100 hours a week. Not worth 75k a year imo.
    Very soon, I'm gonna quit and just do maintenance work for other RVers. The market is there, and I have the experience. And I'd much rather work for myself making 40-50k a year working 20 hours a week than being a bootlicker for a corporation that will replace me in a heartbeat.
    Its all about what you want out of life. Staring at a computer screen 6 days a week is not what I want out of life.

    • @FinancialAdviceNetwork
      @FinancialAdviceNetwork 3 місяці тому +8

      Just to clarify 1200 a month x 12 months x 3 years is what he is saying. At first I had thought he was comparing the two at one year vs a purchase of the motor home. But it does in my opinion make more sense financially. I own a home. It’s $887 a month mortgage, $275 a month taxes (summer + winter tax bill divided by 12) plus around $71 for consumers and $78 for DTE. Then water is about $40 a month. Then some other costs like insurance is $88 a month so it comes out to roughly $1450 a month. That is a lot of money for a single guy like me. No kids no wife. Still costs a lot. If you can get a motor home for less than $1000 a month all in, then you’re winning. Of course house will appreciate in value and a motor home will depreciate. But the motive is to reduce expenses and continue to buy assets. A house that is owner occupied isn’t an asset because it is not putting money in your bank.

    I needed to see this today ❤😊. I’ve been considering this for a long while. I think being able to buy a new MH would be cool for many reasons, but considering how much & how fast they depreciate I can also see getting one that’s a few years old or more for a drastic discount, also being a great choice!

    • @Lauren-vd4qe
      @Lauren-vd4qe 5 місяців тому +6

      a good used truck and fifth wheel is a lot less money to buy, fix and maintain than a MH. u just park the trailer, unhitch, and drive to do fun daytime things, then come home to a comfy spacious trailer for dinner, campfire and comfy bedrm. so much easier.

      @@Lauren-vd4qe I hear you. I’ve been so very much back & forth about this. I agree of the convenience of a tow behind or 5th wheel. I actually just bought a diesel suv to tow a camper with a few months ago but I’ve since realized that the 4400 lb capacity isn’t enough for me as I’d like a 30’ or more. Plus the advantages of a 5th wheel puts an suv out of the running. So much for foresight, hindsight wins again!😅

      @@alloutofdonuts3998 exactly right, but i wd not get a 5th wheel trailer beyond say 31ft or u will find it hard to maneuver in traffic and hard to park in an RV park. 31 ft is plenty for a couple. get a good used truck and good used trailer, no need to get new ones.

      A used and well cared for motorhome is the win win in my book. So often when buying new, the first couple years are normal quirks and warrantee fixit issues. Buying a well cared for and loved older unit has already taken it greatest depreciation hit, and most diesel pushers are just getting happily broken in by the time the first owner decides to change course

      I’m nearing 70 & similar story. How the time flys by so dang fast after retirement age is insane! I’ve been taking care of others all my life & only have one parent left. Blessed to have had them most of my life. Dad passed on 2 yrs ago. I bought a little used Travel Trailer & plan to find the best used pick up to pull it & hit the road in 2025 spring through fall & home for winters & keep mom company. She’s in pretty good health in late 80’s & active. May go with me some but like being close to home & friends every week day & we go to church on Sundays. I will always find a proper place of worship on the road. I’d like to learn how to make extra income while on the road too. So keep dreaming & take the plunge if you can while you can!! I figure 5 yrs will be my limit but in my career, vaca’s were not an option with 5 kids to feed. No kids or hubs now, so it’s travel time😅, God willing that is!

I moved into an apartment and the moment I moved in I knew it was the worst thing I could have ever done. Both have ups and downs but I choose to live in an RV anytime. It's a home, hotel, and summer home all in one plus cheaper to repair than a house, and best of all, No rent or property tax lol. I am now looking for a smaller one and will never leave. Go to a big RV show and look at many different RVs. imagine yourself living in them. Where you would fit your things. Try a rental first.

    I'm thinking about selling my place to go travel in a motorhome. Lots of things to consider, especially when I already live on a lake. The lake is always drying up and it's just lonely out here sometimes though. I'm just leery of hidden costs right now.

    Question: So whenever your RV breaks down, or needs to go to the shop for maintenance, where do you guys stay while your coach is being repaired? This process could take days or a week to complete.

    My dad lived in an rv full time for 5 yrs. He had one that was allegedly made to be lived in. It started falling apart after about 3 yrs. Nowadays the new ones can't even make it to the dealer without being shaken and beaten to a pulp from the trip to the lot. Ridiculously poor build quality

    Biggest RV is still way smaller than the smallest house. Selling an appreciating asset for a depreciating assets. Come 10 or 15 years you will completely regret that decision. Also RVs are poorly made, many have problems after 5 or 10 years. Best mix is to down scale your house and take long RV trips. Always good to have a place to call home.

    You're right you either choose to make money and take a few trips somewhere abroad per year, feeling like a trapped person working endlessly like a slave for the system, or go out there see life, explore meet people learn about cultures, try new food. Life is short you never know if you will make it to see tomorrow ❤

    Have kinda considered sellong my house and buying land. And a big newer RV to live in fulltime, with my son. On the land I would also buy. But am trying to look into the pros and cons of selling my house to do that? My brother said "you will have to do repairs on it here and there." But, forogot that over 18yrs being in my home. I have done a good amount of repairs for it too, haha! Property tax on the land would be cheaper. Cause the "house" would be on wheels. Instead of being a foundation set in on the land. So that would be a bonus for sure. I also have a lot of solar power products I bought the last three years from Bluetti. And it should for the most part totally power all things needing power. And, as much as things will need power.

    I have been living the rv life style since 2014 and the one thing that really bothers me is that I see all these big beautiful Class A diesel pushers and I would love to move up to one from my gas 33 ft. Class A, but I see so many of them on the hook being dragged into the shop for repairs. , now to me, when you spend that kinda money on an RV, it should never be on the hook getting dragged into the shop. I started out with a slide in truck camper and had no issues. Then, a 28-foot class C, no issues, now I am in a 33 ft Class A for the last 3 years and no issues. It just doesn't seem to be worth the extra cost.

    • @fuelyourwander
      @fuelyourwander  4 місяці тому +1

      Buy used. Buy a nice pusher with 25-50k miles that has been well maintained. You wont have any issues. There is no getting around the fact that these “homes on wheels” take a beating and let someone else break it in for you. Most coaches, like ours, are built on chassis that can last 1M miles, so if you buy something with 50k miles that has been well maintained, it is still like brand new.

    We've been FT in our motorhome for 5 years. Sadly, we had to wait until retirement before we could do so. Nevertheless, we feel it's the best decision we ever made too. We live in an older motorhome that someone else paid the depreciation on. We paid $15k for it with only 28k miles and in great shape. It hasn't seen the inside of a repair shop once in the last 5 years we have been living in it full time. I think older, well-maintained motorhomes are often more reliable than brand new RVs, as they have all the bugs worked out of them over the years. We live this debt free lifestyle for 1/3 of what it used to cost us to live in our old stick and brick home. But even if we didn't, what price can you put on your freedom?
