It's aged pretty well and is still an entertaining series. I remember watching it as a kid when it originally aired for all the Superman action but seeing it years later I really enjoyed the whole Moonlighting vibe they went for.
When I was a teenager and the first superman movie with Christopher Reeve was out, I went to see it over and over and over again in the theater. I was crushing really hard, and I couldn’t stop talking about how wonderful Christopher Reeve was as Superman. But, now that I am older, and have a better appreciation of nuance, I can see his genius was actually in his portrayal of Clark Kent.

Lois Lane was first played on the original radio series by Joan Alexander. She lived to 94 years of age. Noel Neil, the second Lois, died aged 95 years and Phyllis Coates, the third Lois, is still with us in 2021, aged 94. Some great genes there.
Lois, not Clois. Kal-El’s love interests are always L-L, like his mother. One would think it sickly Freudian if I didn’t know it was just the writers being lazy, back to the time of the Jerry’s Siegel and Shuster.
@@Egilhelmson “Clois” refers to ‘Clark’ and ‘Lois’ relationship. ‘Clana’ refers to ‘Clark’ and ‘Lana’ relationship. It’s just shorthand (an abbreviation) to describe the relationship that is being referenced. In this case I was referring to the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, together referred to as “CLOIS”.
I think one thing that many of these clips show is that Superman/Clark has to hold back a bit and reign in part of himself because of his powers, but Lois is quite comfortable projecting her strength. That's probably a key reason why the dynamic works so well.
They are who the other wants to be. Lois is just a human woman who goes above and beyond to be the best in the room. Clark is a super man who wants to just be a human man.
Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher will always be my #1 favorite, even though the show aired before I was born. The quality of the writing and chemistry was top notch 💯
I never realized how much Brandon Routh looked a lot like Reeves. Not only that, he emulate his nature of being Clark well, I was taken back to my nostalgia! That’s impressive!
I know it's incredibly geeky and awkward to reply to a 7-month-old comment, but I feel exactly the same way! There are so many instances where Brandon flashes a nerdy smile as Clark, and then you suddenly see Reeve. It's the thin upper lip smile with cute creases at the sides of the mouth - and the teeth look similar too. Nostalgia hits pretty hard!!
That little laught Clark does at 24:19 really sells it for me, Tyler and Bitsie are perfect renditions of the essence of Lois and Clark and will be forever in my book.
He sets a strong pattern for the rest. And Noel Neill REALLY defines the character, as does Fleischer in the cartoons. Without them we don't get the rest.
Brandon Routh EMBODIED Christopher Reeve. From the farm to the city his actions were exact. And when he became Superman, it was so seamless and fluid. And the Lois Lane, I LOVE Margot Kidder. But Kate Bosworth was excellent.
While the first two iterations are rather boring the other ones are really intricate and fun to watch and compare. Each version has something interesting about it. Reeves & kIdeer- Clark is invisible only until Lois realizes he's a sweet guy who cares about his mom Cain & Hatcher- Both are headstrong and quick-witted. And they's got the hots on each other Welling & Durance- Cute-awkward 1st meet and definitely more teen-oriented Routh & Bosworth- Strictly co-workers, but definitely one-sided interest love from the clumsy one Cavill & Adams- Had an interesting 1st meet, but divulged into boring exposition Hoechlin & Tulloch- Very sweet and natural with mutual love and respect from each other.
Boring is rather mean. Those 2 are some of the first ever interpretations of superheroes and respectively the reason they became popular what is boring to you was something kids could watch for the first time EVER seeing there favorites on screen rather than the comic books. Although by todays standards i can see what you mean.
Watch more of George Reeves and Noel Neill, the 50s series may be campy, but there's a reason many older folks consider their Superman and Lois Lane iconic: the chemistry is amazing.
People mock "How could just putting on some glasses hide that you're Superman?"....but Christopher Reeve's performance explains that. He IS a completely different person.
I’ve come to love Tyler and Betsie’s portrayal. I think it’s mainly bc unlike the other renditions of Lois and Clark in Superman and Lois we’ve gotten to know them as individuals, as a mature couple and parents who’ve been together a long time.
@@wheelz314 She's attractive...she's just older, which is what she needs to be if the character is in her 40's. They're parents to teenagers. And while Tyler Hoechlin is 34, he can play older. Bitsie is older, but can play both. I think it works.
After his paralysis, Reeve worked calmly for DECADES to ensure no one would ever be as powerless as he was, again. He was more disabled relative to ordinary people than we are relative to Superman. He truly had lost his powers. And he was more powerful and effective without them. For this reason no one other than Chris Reeve can truly be counted as Superman. Pick your favourite Lois, sure, but for Chris, Superman was his audition to be one of the most heroic people that ever existed.
I will always love Superman and Lois the most than anything else.. Tyler is incredible Superman.. I do love him on 7th heaven too … bitsie is incredible Lois
Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher easily have the best chemistry. I love the first two seasons of that show. Not just Lois and Clark but all the characters were done really well. Easily my favourite Perry White and Jimmy (season 1 Jimmy) too.
The production was designed that way, to be a 90s version of 'Moonlighting' (hence the creator and EC) with the emphasis on the Lois & Clark love story. Chemistry was key from the very beginning.
They used to be my favorite version of the characters, but I think Tyler and Bitsie have them beat in chemistry. I think Dean and Teri have better chemistry, too.
The only ones who had terrible chemistry were Kate Bosworth and Brandon Routh. The others were good or great. If I were to put them in order of best to least chemistry, it would be, 1) Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher, 2) Tom Welling/Erica Durance, 3) Tyler Hoechlin/Elizabeth Tulloch, 4) Christopher Reeve/Margot Kidder, 5) George Reeves/Noel Neill, 6) George Reeves/Phyllis Coates, 7) Henry Cavill/Amy Adams, and 8) Brandon Routh/Kate Bosworth. I never did see the Kirk Alyn version, so I can’t speak to that. Henry and Amy might have moved up the ranks, but the movies just never gave Amy Adams that much to do. I’m sure others will disagree with my order, and that’s fine.
It's getting so that they desaturate the color, even in bright daylight scenes, so much that in another ten years, we will be back to Superman in black and white.
This is excellent. I have loved versions of Superman for over 60 years. However what, I enjoy the most looking back is observing the way the Daily Planet set has changed (i.e. manual typewriters, electric typewriters, word processors, PC workstations, etc.) from decade to decade or from season to season. Plus how, professional office fashion styles have changed from year to year.
Some people say they want a relationship like Harley's and Joker's. But I'd rather have a love like Clark's and Lois's if it were only actually possible in this cold, dark, and evil world of ours. 😢😔
Cool video - thanks for putting together. Amazing how the characters are 1. Almost 90 years old and still going strong. 2. They're so well-conceived and mythologically powerful, that different interpretations are possible and each portrayal is valid.
Thanks for this compilation. I don't feel the need to choose "the best". I like seeing how it was handled at different times / in different story telling eras.
Oh, for the days when you could just walk into a major metropolitan newspaper and say "Hi, I have no journalistic experience, can I have a job please?"
There was a day that you could. But also if you had nothing to show for your efforts after being hired, they kicked you out just as quickly. Nowadays if I wanted to fire somebody I would need a book's worth of paper explaining why or risk getting sued
Never noticed or forgot that Reeve's hair isn't as slicked as usual in that last scene of his Clark. I also like that with the scene just before they get on the elevator, Teri's Lois sort of looks simultaneously annoyed and proud of Cain's Clark's joke.
Coming back to this, for certain that while I like Noel Neill's Lois of the two Phyllis Coates was my favourite Lois. Also looking back at Kirk Alyn's looks and performance, I can see similarities to Tyler Hoechlin's Clark and Superman, even the smile.
Tom and Erica were 100% the best chemistry I’ve ever seen. And their relationship developed in ways no other Lois and Clark ever did, partly because they had six seasons to do it, and partly because they started off as irritating each other. 😂
13:19 Right after Lois said: " You're not keeping up with your end of the conversation it would've been sass if Clark shrugged his shoulders and said: " I have nothing too say" *and walks out lol 😂

Luckily I had Erica on Smallville at the time if not I would have been completely upset. Dean Cain-loved his Clark, before Tyler’s Clark, I felt like Dean’s was the best. But, his Superman was horrible even more so than Henry’s. Henry Cavill- I have nothing against his acting but he wasn’t right for the part either, or maybe it was the writing that made me dislike his Superman? I know he’s popular among fans but I dunno he’s not one of my faves. Kate and Brandon- no chemistry whatsoever. Plus, Brandon ate her up in their small scenes together.
Agree with pretty much every word, except for me Bitsie and Tyler are edging out Tom and Erica for top spot. They have great chemistry. It's so close though!!
Very interesting and well thought out response. One of the factors that I don't think is considered seriously enough, is that The Superman you were introduced to, especially if you were a kid, will often make the biggest, and lasting impact. I saw Chris Reeve in the theatre (yeah, I am ancient, I know) I remember a few adults at the time talking about how they liked George Reeves better. he was their Superman. That said, Reeve was so iconic in the role, it took over 30 years for people to be genuine in their preference for Cavill over him. And I am really getting a kick out of people preferring Tyler. I think he is the best Superman/Clark combo since Reeve, and I enjoy the show in general. The preference for Lois' portrayal is a bit more varied, and often, as in this response, does not match up to their Superman/Clark. Noel Neill was the first live action Lois with Kirk Alyn, and then came back replacing Phyllis Coates with George Reeves. Her portrayal of Lois was probably on par with Chris Reeve's portrayal in terms of popularity. Partly because she embraced the role, and the "nerd" community of the Superman mythos (there was a time when mainstream audiences geeking on Superheroes was not a thing kids) Margot Kidder didn't actually usurp her in many people's mind. It was just that the movies and Chris became iconic. At this point Neill is hardly mentioned because so many generations have passed. The first Lois to actually be more popular than Clark was Teri Hatcher's. Dean Cain was likable enough as Clark, but essentially doing away with the clear duality of the character rendered his portrayal inert. I think Cavill's portrayal suffers from the same issue. It's probably no accident it's the only example in the video where Lois meets Clark on his ship, and displaying powers. She basically met Kal-El, not really Clark, and not really Superman. Erica Durance's Lois has probably been the most popular since Neill's. Personally, she's my favourite Lois. There are many reasons why, but I think it's the combination of Durance's portrayal of Lois's traits, and the characters of Lois and Clark growing into their relationship, before either were reporters, and in Metropolis. It's probably agreed across the board that Kate Bosworth was the worst Lois. She did not "get" the character at all. Amy Adam's is a good Lois, but like Routh and Bosworth, has little chemistry with Cavill. Routh was a pretty decent Superman/ Clark there were always factors that usurped his potential; being a continuation of Reeve's character, the script/plot of the movie, and not having a sequel. It might not have been until the he played Kingdom Come Superman in the CW Crisis storyline that he could call the character his own. Bitsie is a good Lois. Both her and Tyler's portrayals are an amalgamation of many of the best qualities of their predecessors, without, for me, surpassing the best portrayals. Chris's Superman/Clark, and Erica's Lois are still tops for me. Tyler and Bitsie also have great chemistry together, which by default is one of the most important variables. Noel and George had it, so did Teri and Dean, and Tom and Erica had it in spades. Tyler and Bitsie have that level, but perfect for the current show. It's that long term, mature, stable, but still passionate type of relationship. I look forward to seeing where they and their show go in the future.
@@ZoOnTheYT great post and I agree with every word. It was easy to love Tyler and Bitsie in these roles because like you say they embody their characters perfectly without erasing their precedors. I think Yeah Erica and Chris will always be the most iconic and loved Lois Lane and Superman and I like it that way.
If you go by the writing than Smallville wins best Superman hands down. The writing was so good especially considering they did it for ten years and nearing the end they had to find a way to end it.
Technically, Tom Welling’s Clark Kent got the job because Lois gave him the application and the Luthors owned the Daily Planet. He didn’t become The Blur until months later.
I've never watched the show but I think I might do a binge of Superman and Lois. Their meeting is second only to Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeves. I used to watch Lois and Clarke but damn I forgot how snippy she was.
Dean and Terri will always be my favourites. That was my favourite show as a tween and Dean Cain as my first celebrity crush. But I love Erica Durance’s Lois the most and Henry Cavill’s Superman. Henry is such a good actor, I think he would’ve been fantastic if he was given more character development.
I'm so happy that Brandon Routh got to play Superman again in Crisis. And this is a nice reminder of how Superman and Louis are still one of the greatest couples in media.
In one of the movies, Clark was 18 and they did a shot of Lois sitting in the train. She was about 5 years old - which means Superman is a cradle robber!! Lois is like 13 years younger than Superman!!
It’s sad what happened to the Superman Returns version of Lois. A certain madman from Gotham attacks the paper, poisons the building, and bludgeons Lois to death (presumably while laughing maniacally). Clark is left to raise Jason alone. There’s a neat moment in Crisis where he sees Jonathan Kent, the son of his alternate version from Earth-38 (except post-Crisis Jonathan is now a teenager and has a twin brother Jordan, both named after Clark’s fathers). And, of course, the hilarious scene of him interacting with his human doppelgänger Ray Palmer

It's aged pretty well and is still an entertaining series. I remember watching it as a kid when it originally aired for all the Superman action but seeing it years later I really enjoyed the whole Moonlighting vibe they went for.
Yeah the synergy is top tier
And the show's acting age very well
When I was a teenager and the first superman movie with Christopher Reeve was out, I went to see it over and over and over again in the theater. I was crushing really hard, and I couldn’t stop talking about how wonderful Christopher Reeve was as Superman. But, now that I am older, and have a better appreciation of nuance, I can see his genius was actually in his portrayal of Clark Kent.
Hatcher and Cain had great chemistry
They were my favorite. 👍
Kidder & Reeve had better Chemistry
@@commanderbracey7501 Margot Kidder & Christopher Reeve
@@bigwillietheb Reeves and Kidder were the Superman and Lois of my youth. I love them.......watching the superfriends on Saturday morning back in the 70s. Reeves was Superman on the big screen. But as an adult........I thought........Teri Hatcher is HOT as hell. 😍
@@commanderbracey7501 they were mine too but they will always be my favorite lois & Clark & that is Reeve not Reeves , that would be George Reeves from the tv show superman
Lois Lane was first played on the original radio series by Joan Alexander. She lived to 94 years of age. Noel Neil, the second Lois, died aged 95 years and Phyllis Coates, the third Lois, is still with us in 2021, aged 94. Some great genes there.
Noel Neill also appeared in Superman Returns (2006) as a dying woman who Lex Luthor takes advantage of.
Tom and Erica will always be the best for me 🥰 #CloisForever
The Erica Durance and Tom Welling versions of Clois in 'Smallville' will always be my favorite Clois duo of all time.
Exactly. She's the alpha when he's out of costume.
I mean the writing was supercamp and childish but yeah it was lovely
I love that groan and the gentle knock from Clark when his coat got caught in the door.
Smallville Clark and Lois first meeting is epic! ;P
I agree this was the best meeting of Lois and Clark, but I have to say that Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had the best Lois meets Superman.
Indeed.
Only true fans will remember that episode.

Smallville’s will always be the best cause he hates her for like 3 seasons and it cracks me up
Ikr it's the best tension build ever
She irritates him but I don't think he hates her.
Erica’s Lois smiled after being lifted like that cuz she found herself a strong boyfriend
I appreciate the inclusion of Kirk it always bothers me when people forget him.
He sets a strong pattern for the rest. And Noel Neill REALLY defines the character, as does Fleischer in the cartoons.
Without them we don't get the rest.
It will always be Teri and Dean for me. I remember watching it on the BBC in the 90s when I was a kid. They introduced me to Superman
They just added the series to HBOMax!
Agree. They are my absolute favorite! Such great chemistry!!!
Me too
I like how they combined the characteristics that worked and left out the parts that didn't for Tyler's Clark.
Reeves & kIdeer- Clark is invisible only until Lois realizes he's a sweet guy who cares about his mom
Cain & Hatcher- Both are headstrong and quick-witted. And they's got the hots on each other
Welling & Durance- Cute-awkward 1st meet and definitely more teen-oriented
Routh & Bosworth- Strictly co-workers, but definitely one-sided interest love from the clumsy one
Cavill & Adams- Had an interesting 1st meet, but divulged into boring exposition
Hoechlin & Tulloch- Very sweet and natural with mutual love and respect from each other.
Boring is rather mean. Those 2 are some of the first ever interpretations of superheroes and respectively the reason they became popular what is boring to you was something kids could watch for the first time EVER seeing there favorites on screen rather than the comic books. Although by todays standards i can see what you mean.
6:32 Some of Clark's awkwardness wasn't an act 💕
"Reeves" and Kidder??
[George REEVES; Christopher REEVE]
I actually find the George Reeves one a good one, pretty good for the time and he just looks like Clark/Superman
Watch more of George Reeves and Noel Neill, the 50s series may be campy, but there's a reason many older folks consider their Superman and Lois Lane iconic: the chemistry is amazing.
"I love you in every universe."
Where’s the line from?
@victorvolobuev507 Doctor Strange 2
perfect quote for this montage 👍
Reeve was the best. His Clark Kent unmatched.
Ugggh this Betsie chick... What happened to the good old days when actresses were actually _attractive_?
@@wheelz314 She's attractive...she's just older, which is what she needs to be if the character is in her 40's. They're parents to teenagers. And while Tyler Hoechlin is 34, he can play older. Bitsie is older, but can play both. I think it works.
@@wheelz314 Wow bit harsh dude

Agreed one of things I like about Superman and Lois is we’re seeing a side that really hasn’t been explored until now
Erica durance and tom welling the best!
Tyler and Elizabeth ♥️I'm loving their performances in Superman and Lois
Elizabeth will always be Bitsie. That's how she was introduced in Grimm.
He wasn’t a paraplegic, he was a quadriplegic. He could only move from the neck upwards after his horrific accident.
I will always love Superman and Lois the most than anything else.. Tyler is incredible Superman.. I do love him on 7th heaven too … bitsie is incredible Lois
Donner's Superman really captures the true atmosphere of newspaper offices.Pure chaos.
Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher easily have the best chemistry. I love the first two seasons of that show. Not just Lois and Clark but all the characters were done really well. Easily my favourite Perry White and Jimmy (season 1 Jimmy) too.
They changed Jimmy for such a stupid reason. "He looks too much like Clark", when he really didn't.
The production was designed that way, to be a 90s version of 'Moonlighting' (hence the creator and EC) with the emphasis on the Lois & Clark love story. Chemistry was key from the very beginning.
Michael Landes got royally screwed. I was disappointed that Cat Grant didn't return, but at least Tracy Scoggins didn't get recast.
@@aaronleverton4221 Absolutely. The first Season worked so well, I don’t know why they thought they needed to make so many changes.

Tom and Erica had the best chemistry.
NO!
Teri and Dean always warmed my heart. 😏
@@techinrl9869 you did see Kirk Alyn. He's the first one in this video.
It's getting so that they desaturate the color, even in bright daylight scenes, so much that in another ten years, we will be back to Superman in black and white.
Very true and great observation.
I guess that makes all this full circle…
Dean and Hatcher have a great vibe that I didn't recognize when I was a child.
This is excellent. I have loved versions of Superman for over 60 years. However what, I enjoy the most looking back is observing the way the Daily Planet set has changed (i.e. manual typewriters, electric typewriters, word processors, PC workstations, etc.) from decade to decade or from season to season. Plus how, professional office fashion styles have changed from year to year.
and phone booths to cell phones
Some people say they want a relationship like Harley's and Joker's. But I'd rather have a love like Clark's and Lois's if it were only actually possible in this cold, dark, and evil world of ours. 😢😔
Why the fuck would people want their relationship to be like harley quinn and joker?
@@bi_beans9011 there’s stupid people that romanticize “toxic” relationships especially teens and young adults it’s so dumb
"some people"? Who are those people? Psychopaths?
Honestly, Gomez and Morticia are the ultimate in relationship goals.
9:17 Clark’s smile is perfect.
i didn't know there existed superman movies before 1978
Cool video - thanks for putting together. Amazing how the characters are 1. Almost 90 years old and still going strong. 2. They're so well-conceived and mythologically powerful, that different interpretations are possible and each portrayal is valid.
Nothing lasted longer except Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Don Quixote and Shakespeare.
Thanks for this compilation. I don't feel the need to choose "the best". I like seeing how it was handled at different times / in different story telling eras.
Long live Christopher Reeve (:
I love Superman and Lois’s Tyler and Elizabeth. They did a good job playing a cute couple
Cute? Really!? Ugh! They are the worst

Love the time capsule. 👍
I'm born in the 90's, Grew up with Smallville.. So, The 'Blur' Tom & Erica is my world Universe.. Nobody can change that..
How like how George Reeve's Clark was telling them the truth. 😅
Lois and Clark are my favourite comic book couple and Tom & Erica are my favourite version.
Tom and Erica's chemistry was hands down the best especially the first 3 seasons when they would bicker with each other.
Tyler Hoechlin & Elizabeth Tulloch did a fantastic job. They have all the best elements from the past and in a few sccenes build something.
Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Editor of The Daily Planet
Tom and Erica were 100% the best chemistry I’ve ever seen. And their relationship developed in ways no other Lois and Clark ever did, partly because they had six seasons to do it, and partly because they started off as irritating each other. 😂
Yes hence their relationship felt so real
All of them are good.
Thanks for uploading this video
Teri Hatcher was so beautiful 🔥 😻
Tom & Erica and Hoechlin & Bitsie were amazing.
Brandon Routh was like a reincarnation of Christopher Reeve
I like the bit where Clark met Lois.

Most Hated versions 😂
Kate Bosworth- completely miscast as Lois she made me hate Lois in that movie which made me sad because she’s my favorite character ever.
It was the writing. MoS was mostly very dark and action focused
Apparently Christopher Reeve was the first Superman to get his job at the Daily Planet BEFORE he started using Superman to get stories 🤣🤣🤣
Technically, Tom Welling’s Clark Kent got the job because Lois gave him the application and the Luthors owned the Daily Planet. He didn’t become The Blur until months later.

Reeves is still the best Superman in my book! As for Lois its between Durance and Hatcher!
Superman rocks
My Favorite Clark Kent/ Lois Lane will always be Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.
They are all awesome but superman and lois is the best tv series
