What are you thoughts on the new Panasonic GH5? Have you got one, are you thinking of getting one and what interests you most about this new camera? Let me know in the comments below.
Until Metabones releases a firmware fix, search "GH5 + SPEEDBOOSTER : ASTUCE pour LE FAIRE MARCHER ! (GH5 + METABONES FIXED)" on UA-cam for a video reference to see if this works for you.
Thanks very much for this, for the benefit of others you can get the metabones adapter to work with zoom lenses if you do the below, however, AF and stabilisation don't seem to be working very well with this work around for me: Make sure the camera is off Press the wheel on the side of the metabones inwards and hold it (as if you were clicking it) whilst turning the camera on You can now zoom with the lens without the camera locking up, to change the aperture you need to use the jog wheel on the metabones
Thanks for making this. I shoot with the GH4 and I am seriously considering the GH5. I wish in this episode you had mentioned the autofocus complaint that I have heard has been an issue for most.
Yes. If I am doing cinematic stuff I tend to use manual as well as I have Sigma and Tokina lenses with the Nikon mounts that I use with a Metabones and it doesn't allow the autofocus to work anyway, but I love the lenses. But when I use the camera as a Vlog camera I have some Wide angle Lumix lenses that I use. It would have been nice if the GH5 was a huge step forward in autofocus. But it sounds like people are really disappointed. Just was wondering what you found. But if you don't use it, I understand. Thanks
Cruising Off Duty from my limited use of it, it seems a little better than the GH4. The only autofocus system that i have ever really liked is the dual AF by canon in their Cinema EOS range like c100 mk2 and c300mk2, it's very good but patented by Canon.
I'm really impressed with it's ability to get a nice shallow DOF - I was concerned that it's sensor size would be limiting but it's clearly not. So it looks like it has pretty much everything. The autofocus is now fixed - the low light is not crazy fantastic but then I don't want a night vision camera. Royal William yard is looking good BTW.
The footage looks really good. I've a GH3 so I imagine the improvement would be significant, especially with the 4k option. The IBIS would make a massive difference for me also as I primarily use a mix of Pany and Oly primes. (12mm Olympus especially) Thanks for sharing your views.
Hey Jonathan, great review! A lot of informations. Thanks a lot! I get my GH5 tomorrow and I can´t wait to go out and film some stuff. BTW because of your problem with the speedbooster of Metabones. I asked them via mail and the sent me this today: "Dear Thilo, Regarding the EF-M43 adapters, we pre-ordered the GH5 back then in January, but we have just received the camera for a short while. As far as I know at the moment, the early released GH5 was in FW ver0.5 and the official release of FW ver1.0, this is NOT compatible with our EF-M43 adapters with current firmware V2.62. We are investigating this and any other compatibility issue which may arise and update the firmware for our adapters as soon as we can. It will work after firmware updated. Thank you for your understanding and patience for the new firmware update!" So there will be an update soon! Peace from Mallorca
I have one question: How is the Autofocus in Video and Photomode on the GH5? I read some reviews that stated that the AF seems to be really slow. Whats your experience on that?
TheMicroGhost i don't tend to use autofocus very much, from a quick test it's better than the GH4, but with canon lenses it's pretty slow and hunts a lot, it's much better with native lenses.
You mentioned you need to change the vfr in menu, but you can set the custom buttoms and I have C1 for 180 FHD C2 for 60 4K and the 3 C3's for 48fps and 6K, and I dont need to know how the mani meny was set
Good video! Very informative. Has the grading posibilities been improved. with gh4 compression artifacts was often shown making it impossible to use luts + special grades.
Jesper Giørtz-Behrens never had a problem with the GH4 myself unless shooting in VLog (8bit)and heavily grading. The 8 bit GH5 is very similar to gh4, the 10bit is slightly more robust.
surely someone has already pointed this out, but i set up the camera for 4k30 and vfr150 and stored that to the /c1/ custom mode. i put the vfr setting in my q.menu in case i wanted to change the frame rate on the fly. /guy
The Nikon Speedbooster works fine. It doesn't get firmware. The issue is the Canon speedbooster because it's contacts don't communicate with the body properly.
I believe by now they have a fix for the adapter issue. So I'm just wondering your thought now white the speedbooster and canon lenses. How are they performing now. What is the different between the 2 x speedbooster options they're is like a .71x and a .64x is there one that you recommend or does one work better than the other. Any feed back would be great. I'm interested in purchasing a GH5 with a speedbooster for my canon mount lenses. Thank
thank you kindly for the support, glad you enjoyed the video. I use a wide range of lenses for shooting video, mainly Canon ones with a metabones adapter. However, a good all round lens for the GH5 is the Panasonic 12-35 F2.8.
Jonathan awesome footage!! Can you tell me how you are focusing the GH5 during those shots? Manual focus, auto focus one tap? Any tips for focusing/focus settings would be awesome, thanks!!!
Jonathan J Scott Films..... I am thinking of moving from a Nikon D7100 to a GH5. The low light of the 7100 is disappointing to me (maybe it is just me but). How would you say the GH5 does in low light for stills (compared to the nikon d7100) and video? I would be using this mostly for stills for now while I learn video as I would love to start doing more video. Just want to know if you think it will perform a fair bit better in low light or not..... Also if you still have a canon body, could you do a sound comparison of the shuttr og the GH5 vs DSLR's..... Thank you
Great review. (1) If I use my Canon "L" 16-35mm and leave it on 35mm or 16mm etc, for video without zooming, will the AF then work perfectly with Metabones? It sounded like it gets messed up only when you change it while filming. Can you clarify? (2) When Metabones works with the GH5 and a prime/non-zoom Canon lens for video, is the GH5 AF exactly the same as with resident lenses or does the AF speed performance suffer at all with the Metabones setup? Thanks.
Halunlimited thanks, glad you found it useful. in answer to your questions, currently you can only use it at 16mm, any other focal and it locks up and autofocus is a lot slower than with native lenses generally. Cheers 👍
Export the 4:2:2 10 bit and you'll DEF see a difference in grading.... once the data rates gets higher in the summer we should see a noticeable 'upgrade' whiel shooting 10bit internal
you won't see ANY artifacting as a result of the 10bit 4:2:2 needing at least 500mbps to be full 4:2:2 and not have the codec fall apart. And you'll be able to stress the grade even more than you can now because it will be close to what you actually need for that type of data rate. Wolfcrow just did a great video on it, search him on youtube and watch hi latest videos that deal with compression and uncompressed files. You'll def learn a lot. now I can honestly say its NOT a rehashed version of whats in the camera, shooting externally really does allow you to stretch out the files much more than shooting internal when using a good codec like ProRes HQ (which btw records at 900mbps+.) Right now 150mbps just really isn't enough to be substantially different then the 10bit 4:2:0 in camera or even the 8bit 4:2:0 in camera hence why Panasonic is updating the firmware.
Not once did you speak about the low light? Or did i completely miss that aspect of the video. Compare to other camera's it obviously doesnt fair at high iso (3200+) but as a run and gun do you feel like this camera can do the job?
Patwwa Productions Nope you are right i didn't mention it, well spotted, can't cover everything 😀. I'd rate the GH5 at about a stop better than the GH4 in low light so it's reasonably clean up to ISO 1600. This would probably be the max I'd be comfortable using it at, maybe ISO 3200 at a push. Fast lenses help a lot and other than really dark conditions (which i personally don't have the need to shoot in) the camera shoots a pretty clean image. Hope that is helpful. 😀
Great video. Do you prefer this image to the C100 mkii? I've been using pannys with metabones, rokinon lenses and external audio, but I'm really a solo shooter or a plus one.. and all the add-ons have been driving me nuts. The all in one package of a c100 mkii is appealing to me and seeing how you've used both, I'm just curious your opinion on footage / image quality as far as sensor (bit/DR). Is AF on mkii good enough for run and gun moving shots? Couldn't care less about 4k.
Jonathan David yes the c100mk2 has all the convenience built in, xlrs, NDs etc. the AF which uses Canon's dual pixel AF is the best i have ever used. I like both cameras but for pure run and gun as a single shooter you can't go far wrong with the c100. However, don't underestimate the use of the 4K, a lot of clients are coming to expect it and it offers a lot of creative options in post.
They are two quite different cameras in a lot of ways, it's only a question you can answer really knowing how you use your kit and what you want to get from it.
Have you tested the autofocus with the metabones adapter? I haven't decided if i want to stay with my 24-105L and get a metabones adapter for gh5 or switch over to micro 4 3 lenses.
maximilianboo yep, currently it doesn't work with the 24-105. The autofocus with Canon lenses is a lot slower than with native lenses. I hardly use autofocus so it's not a big deal for me, hope that helps.
metabones is working on an update as we speak. Wrote to them and they are working on it and should be releasing it soon. Along with the mark V MFT speedboosters and adapters... check my announcement on my channel and you'll see they recentlya nnounced the new sony adapters and will be announcing the new fuji, MFT, and leica adapters relatively soon
Jonathan J Scott Films in the states they are up grades. We just got the update for FHD 10 bit 60p 4.2.2... we are expected to get another upgrade I'm guessing that's it.
Bobby Washington Vlog I think you might be getting confused, the update was fhd 10bit 4:2:2. there is another one which will allow 4K 10 bit 400mbits/s coming in the summer, however the camera has always been able to record 4K 60p in 8 bit
Since I haven't invested in any platform lenses I'm thinkking to get these: - Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14 mm1:2.8 Pro - Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25 mm 1:1.2 Pro - Panasonic 42.5mm Leica CA DG Nocticron - Sigma 302963 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Still thinking about the telephoto: Panasonic 35-100mm F2.8 Power O.I.S. or Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm F.2.8 but wuthout IS
great review, thank you! could you tell if they have put punch in and crop marks into gh5? no one talks about it, so I guess they didn't, but I'd love to know for sure! is IBIS like automatic, or do you have to set focal lenght every time you swich lenses (like in a7s2)? thank you! I'm still using GH4 with sigma 18-35 mostly and I love handheld shooting so much, but without any IS it just looks awful. I guess GH5 can be a lifechanger :D
There is a punch it which crops in on the sensor, its called the Ex. Tele Conv. in the menu, it works in both the 4k and 1080 modes. IBIS is automatic and it recognises the focal length of your lens automatically unless you are using manual lenses then you have to input the focal length, the camera asks you on start-up so it at least means you don't have to go into menus every time. The IBIS is probably the best I have seen in a camera in this price bracket, very good indeed.
it is frustrating but it is to do with the engineering of how the Panasonic sensor sends data to the image processor, I remember hearing an engineer saying that the camera would need an almost complete overhaul to add this function.
Don't use a laptop other than for mobile editing on projects, 90% of my editing is done in an editing suite running desktop PCs, I have a video on my channel which takes you through exactly what hardware I use, check it out. For back ups in the field I tend to use Western Digital Passport drives.
Richard Deckard no, i think you may have misunderstood what i said in the video, the GH5 has a m4/3 sensor which is a 2x crop over full frame, so a 35mm has the same field of view as 70mm on a full frame camera. The GH4 has a 2x crop in 1080p but a 2.3 crop in 4K mode which was a bit annoying, that has gone and it's a straight 2x crop on the GH5 in all resolutions.
It wasn't you, I had read it somewhere else, but your explanation is very helpful. Thank you so much - that was quick. If you have time for one more - does the Gh5 have the same annoying lag out of the HDMI as my GH4?
No problem. I'm no sure as I haven't hooked mine up to a monitor yet. From memory on the GH4 if you set the audio mode to real-time rather than recorded you'll remove the lag I think.
Thanks again so much. I have shot one documentary and over the next year plan to shoot a short work of fiction based on a story I wrote on college. Trying to decide between GH5 or maybe just get Atomos for my GH4 or maybe even go for Sony. Thanks again.
Panasonic claim 12 stops with the paid V-LogL upgrade, from my testing its somewhere between 10-12 stops. You won't get any more DR using an external recorder.
I see, thanks for that info. How about the firmware update with HDR, do you think it will increase the DR of the camera or how will affect the quality?
Ok. Well, it doesn't have to be those two expensive cameras that you mentioned to get more DR. In that case I could get the BMPCC with 13 stops or the Sony A7, I've been doing some research of both. I got the Gh4 with many lenses, and the GH5 has so many good features, that I'm wondering if keeping the Gh4 and add to the team an affordable model like the BMPCC so I could use the same lenses, or try the Sony for its nice image, colors and low light but will have to spend on more lenses or sell my Gh4 and get the GH5. I just thought I would get more DR with the GH5, but that is not a bummer that would stop me from buying it you know. Have you ever used the BMPCC or Sony A7?
Nicolas herrera w yep used both a lot. BMPC is old now and needs so much extra to make it work, not a fan of it at all. A7s2 is a nice camera which produces great images, not with out its flaws either but no camera is perfect
hey Jonathan do you have any problem with the inbody stabilization? some of my lens do not let me use in body stabalization...The option is grey and don't let me acess :/ I use a metabones speedbooster 0.71X
FlipsideLongboard hmmm not sure, have you tried cycling the camera on an off again, think it might have happened once or twice but that fixed it. Also have you updated your firmware for your speedbooster to the latest 2.7 GH5 firmware.
Awesome video! I have a question - I was filming at 180 fps and it was incredibly grainy at 800 iso. Is this normal? Or is there a setting that I can use to make it work better. I feel like it shouldn't be grainy at that low of an iso.
SAMMY B I find this camera needs to be set low all the time and pump as much light as you can to get incredible imagery. the sensor is too small to take part 320 iso.
I found that the VFR mode just doesn't collect as much data as when you're shooting regular video modes. I'll probably just stay away from this feature unless it's absolutely necessary to capture footage like this. Kind of upsetting but 60 fps 4K will probably look fine slowed down in post.
SAMMY B the data rate is the same BUT at higher frame rates the same amount of data is spread over more frames, meaning the data per frame is less. like i say in the video, the quality drops after 60fps quite heavily and the 180fps is very soft, your only option is to shoot a shallow DoF really at this very high frame rate.
I've mentioned this in other comments... i don't tend to use autofocus very much, from a quick test it's better than the GH4, but with canon lenses it's pretty slow and hunts a lot, it's much better with native lenses. Hope that helps.
I saw a video, that you have to test the AF a lot and you have to take some time to find the correct settings. But when you find the settings, it workes pretty amazing! I get my GH5 tomorrow to test some stuff as well. :)
Jonathan J Scott Films I am using the new 12 - 35 Panasonic lens Lumix lens and yes I have dual stabilization on it's not jerkiness in generous from from the camera Shake it's like even when it's on the tripod and I'm panting side-to-side it's like skipping frames it's jerky that way like choppy I don't know if that's the shutter speed or not
Frank Rogers hmmm not sure, try turning the e-stabilisation off, but leaving the other stabilisation on, so it displays the waving hand icon ✋on the screen. Some people have reported e-stabilisation doing weird stuff to their footage
What are you thoughts on the new Panasonic GH5? Have you got one, are you thinking of getting one and what interests you most about this new camera? Let me know in the comments below.
Until Metabones releases a firmware fix, search "GH5 + SPEEDBOOSTER :
ASTUCE pour LE FAIRE MARCHER ! (GH5 + METABONES FIXED)" on UA-cam for a
video reference to see if this works for you.
Thanks very much for this, for the benefit of others you can get the metabones adapter to work with zoom lenses if you do the below, however, AF and stabilisation don't seem to be working very well with this work around for me:
Make sure the camera is off
Press the wheel on the side of the metabones inwards and hold it (as if you were clicking it) whilst turning the camera on
You can now zoom with the lens without the camera locking up, to change the aperture you need to use the jog wheel on the metabones
Great review. One of the best ones I have seen on the GH5
Thanks, very kind of you to say so
Very great review! :)
Thanks for making this. I shoot with the GH4 and I am seriously considering the GH5. I wish in this episode you had mentioned the autofocus complaint that I have heard has been an issue for most.

ColGadarby Thanks, yeah when combined with a fast lens and/or speedbooster a shallow DoF is easy to achieve when required.
The footage looks really good. I've a GH3 so I imagine the improvement would be significant, especially with the 4k option.
The IBIS would make a massive difference for me also as I primarily use a mix of Pany and Oly primes. (12mm Olympus especially)

no problem, thanks for commenting
Great reviews, I jjust got the GH5 and I love it!!!! subbed
Thanks, have fun shooting with it
Hey Jonathan, great review! A lot of informations. Thanks a lot! I get my GH5 tomorrow and I can´t wait to go out and film some stuff. BTW because of your problem with the speedbooster of Metabones. I asked them via mail and the sent me this today:

Thank you very much for this well made review!
you're most welcome

Jesper Giørtz-Behrens never had a problem with the GH4 myself unless shooting in VLog (8bit)and heavily grading. The 8 bit GH5 is very similar to gh4, the 10bit is slightly more robust.
surely someone has already pointed this out, but i set up the camera for 4k30 and vfr150 and stored that to the /c1/ custom mode. i put the vfr setting in my q.menu in case i wanted to change the frame rate on the fly. /guy
Great tip, thanks
The Nikon Speedbooster works fine. It doesn't get firmware. The issue is the Canon speedbooster because it's contacts don't communicate with the body properly.
Can you tell me more about the camera in low light conditions and the Best highest ISO to work with it? Thanks
Fast lenses help a lot, I don't shoot in low light very often but I'd be happy pushing the camera to ISO1600. Hope that helps.

Someone who talks English! Great presentation there, thanks!
Nice video, I have ordered mine and can't wait fir it to arrive. Did you use LUTS for the edit of this video?
B Rich Thanks very much. No LUTs just a quick grade using Lumetri panel in premiere pro
Jonathan J Scott Films.....

Its better than the GH4 by about a stop, my opinion is that with the right lenses (fast primes) its fine in low light. I'm happy shooting at ISO 1600.

They are two quite different cameras in a lot of ways, it's only a question you can answer really knowing how you use your kit and what you want to get from it.
Hello,
What is the benefit of filming of filming in 48fps and converting to 24fps vs just filming in 24fps?
Thanks!
TOKYObrah if you film in 48 FPS and convert to 24fps you get slow motion. i.e the footage is slowed to 50% normal speed.
Oh okay. I thought you filmed at a higher frame rate and then dropped the frame rate down and converted it to 24fps
Have you tested the autofocus with the metabones adapter? I haven't decided if i want to stay with my 24-105L and get a metabones adapter for gh5 or switch over to micro 4 3 lenses.

the Zhiyun crane can support a GH5 with a lens? i thought it would be too heavy
No its well with in the weight limit (depending on what lens you use of course). The Crane can hold up to 1800g.
We don't have 4k 60fps in the USA yet... When did you get that upgrade
Bobby Washington Vlog it's not an upgrade, it was one of the major selling points of the camera, they all have it.
Jonathan J Scott Films in the states they are up grades. We just got the update for FHD 10 bit 60p 4.2.2... we are expected to get another upgrade I'm guessing that's it.

Jonathan J Scott Films that's correct, I was thinking you already had 4k 10bit 400mbs. Thanks for you response
Bobby Washington Vlog no problems my friend.

Quick question which lenses do you personaly use with this camera and which native lenses can you recomend. Thanks.
LeoSurovec i use lots and lots of different lenses, mainly Canon L series. On the native front the 12-35 f2.8 is one of the best all round lenses.
Since I haven't invested in any platform lenses I'm thinkking to get these:
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14 mm1:2.8 Pro
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25 mm 1:1.2 Pro
- Panasonic 42.5mm Leica CA DG Nocticron
- Sigma 302963 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
Still thinking about the telephoto:
Panasonic 35-100mm F2.8 Power O.I.S. or
Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm F.2.8 but wuthout IS
LeoSurovec cool! have fun with it my friend 😀
HI , Few person are saying GH5 problem with 10 bit 4:2:2 not showing the footage in software ,is it true ? pls let me know .Thank you
Jaya Prakash yes I've heard some people say this, no problems for me using a PC and Premiere Pro cc 2017
great review, thank you! could you tell if they have put punch in and crop marks into gh5? no one talks about it, so I guess they didn't, but I'd love to know for sure! is IBIS like automatic, or do you have to set focal lenght every time you swich lenses (like in a7s2)?
The IBIS is probably the best I have seen in a camera in this price bracket, very good indeed.
thanks for an answer!
sorry for not being clear, with punch in I meant - can you zoom in while recording to check your focus?
Jacek Sikorski no you can't unfortunately.
they are smart, how can they not give it to us! thanks for answers ;-)
it is frustrating but it is to do with the engineering of how the Panasonic sensor sends data to the image processor, I remember hearing an engineer saying that the camera would need an almost complete overhaul to add this function.
Hey Jonathan, you managed to get good bokeh in the video, which lens and adapter did you use ? also keep up the good work.
Justin Moskblake which shots are you referring to ?
The shot at 2:30, also how far were you from the subject ?
Justin Moskblake canon 85mm f1.8 on metabones speedbooster, probably about 15ft away. Hope that helps
Thanks a ton. We need more people like you in the UA-cam community!
looking in getting gh5, good review thanks
Saul Barry autofocus
i dont need autofocus really
Hi Jonathon-what laptop are you editing your GH5 footage on and which external hard drive(s) do you recommend?
Don't use a laptop other than for mobile editing on projects, 90% of my editing is done in an editing suite running desktop PCs, I have a video on my channel which takes you through exactly what hardware I use, check it out. For back ups in the field I tend to use Western Digital Passport drives.
Great review, Jonathan. So there is no crop factor on the GH5 - is a 35Mmm then a true 35mm focal length, or is it more like 70mm?
Cool, hope it goes well for you. Happy shooting.
Your eyes are extremely blue. Looks kinda cool.
Hey Jonathan, good video! I would like to know what is the dynamic range of the Gh5, is it 12? Would it be more with an external recorder?
Panasonic claim 12 stops with the paid V-LogL upgrade, from my testing its somewhere between 10-12 stops. You won't get any more DR using an external recorder.
I see, thanks for that info. How about the firmware update with HDR, do you think it will increase the DR of the camera or how will affect the quality?
Nicolas herrera w no, it won't add any extra DR, if you want more DR look at a more expensive camera like URSA mini or C300mk2
A7s2 is a nice camera which produces great images, not with out its flaws either but no camera is perfect
hey Jonathan do you have any problem with the inbody stabilization? some of my lens do not let me use in body stabalization...The option is grey and don't let me acess :/
I use a metabones speedbooster 0.71X
FlipsideLongboard which lenses?
Tamron 70-300mm VC (with in lens stabilisation)
FlipsideLongboard hmmm not sure, have you tried cycling the camera on an off again, think it might have happened once or twice but that fixed it. Also have you updated your firmware for your speedbooster to the latest 2.7 GH5 firmware.
on and off don't change but i will chek now for the speedbooster update thanks :) i keep you in touch ;)
FlipsideLongboard good luck.
What set up (camera, lens, etc) used on this review? (nice outcome, by the way)
Emanuel A. for the pieces to camera, this was shot on the GH4 with Canon 24mm F1.4L
I mean, for the reviewer/presenter parts... GH4 + Canon 24 f/1.4 L?
Emanuel A. yep, that is correct, shot in 4K.
SpeedBooster, right?
Yes, 0.71
Awesome video! I have a question - I was filming at 180 fps and it was incredibly grainy at 800 iso. Is this normal? Or is there a setting that I can use to make it work better. I feel like it shouldn't be grainy at that low of an iso.
SAMMY B I find this camera needs to be set low all the time and pump as much light as you can to get incredible imagery. the sensor is too small to take part 320 iso.
Try it at a lower ISO and see what happens
How is the auto focus? thank you
I've mentioned this in other comments... i don't tend to use autofocus very much, from a quick test it's better
than the GH4, but with canon lenses it's pretty slow and hunts a lot,
it's much better with native lenses. Hope that helps.
I saw a video, that you have to test the AF a lot and you have to take some time to find the correct settings. But when you find the settings, it workes pretty amazing! I get my GH5 tomorrow to test some stuff as well. :)
i am having Problems With Jittery Jerky Study Looking Footage when panning side to side even slowly with the GH5
FRANK R ICE COLD what lens are you using and what mode do you have the in camera stabilisation set to?
But it ain't full frame tho!?
No, micro four thirds.
