  • Today we're building Moebius Models Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer plastic model kit. A challenge to paint as we work some oil paints into our typical acrylic palette.

You should build your self a drying box, essentially it's a sealed boxed with an halogen light bulb in it, usually with a dimmer switch and a shiny foil lining to bounce heat around. Works amazing for drying large batches of minis with oils on them.

So glad you are doing this kit! I have one in my stash and was wonder if you had painted this yourself what colors and techniques you would use...I guess I need not wonder anymore.
    Finished project looks awesome.

Its a very iconic piece of art and I feel like your final rendition of this kit did it justice. I really like the idea of the oil paints on the armor, it gives you a sort of color shifting feel.

The added benefit of moving the stirrups forward is that when you ride you want to be standing on the balls of your feet instead of the arches of your feet. Mostly as a safety thing as it is much easier to get your feet out in a bad situation when they are only to the balls of your feet. You do not want to have a foot stuck and get dragged by a runaway horse.

This is making me want to more and more start messing with oil paints and see what I can do with them. But first, perfecting airbrush technique!

Very nice - I'd say the main problem you had with this kit was the fact that it was a kit to begin with; yes, the artwork is iconic in that it's one of Frazetta's most recognized, but that does not mean that the artwork is suitable as a model. Frazetta has done a lot more stuff that would lend itself a lot better to becoming models than this one since there is so much guessing involved.
That said, very fine work there - I would probably have tackled it using acrylics all around, but that's me.

I would have been so tempted to paint the horse up as Binky from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.

Thank you! Have this one in the build pile. This will be a huge help. (Any chance you'll do "Vermithrax" from Pegasus Hobbies?)

If you want your oil paints to dry fast (For oil paints about 7-11 hours) Get some painting butter medium, it quickens the drying time by about a month. It's toxic though like just about everything else in oil painting so have a fan on.

I used Liquin for canvas painting with oils. It isn't less poisonous AFAIK, but it didn't have a strong fume, either.

imh experience oils do more or less dry in about that time frame ("overnight") anyway.

I wish they took the chainmail or armor plating down the shoulder/arm like it is is the painting......don't know how they missed that!!

you get very nice blacks if you mix ultramarine with burnt umber. nothing wrong with using mars black or Payne's grey, but a blue/brown combo gives a very nice gradation of shades with virtually no effort
you're v. right about blood being cheesy - dried up blood has a darker color and may be more appropriate

I need to work on my color mixing with oils. Especially creating browns. Not use to having to do that.

@@ThePaintingClinic Oils and (artists') acrylics are in many ways easier to work with than the enamel type stuff you are used to. Some of the best tutorials I have seen can be found on the youtube channels "Draw Mix Paint" and the one by Andrew Tischler. They have specific clips on how to hit any desired colour.

Isn't the death dealer sword hanging on his left side with the blade facing forward and the handle facing back?

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic  3 роки тому +1

The cape is in front of it in Death Dealer 1. It hangs the same way in Death Dealer 3. Death Dealer 5 has it reversed.

when using oils, do you need to use some kind of a primer?
    thanks!

I prefer to prime my models before I use acrylic or oil tbh.

  • @DrWhom

could you not just heat the cape until it is just soft enough to make it conform to the body?
