This video of the Wilfred Sykes was recorded yesterday 12/28 and not only is this ship unbelievably cool, but it’s very historic as well. It was the last ship to load next to Edmond Fitzgerald. This vessel departed two hours after the Fitzgerald in 1975 from the same loading dock in Superior. Just that alone is unbelievable to think about. Captain Lori Reinhart is in charge of the Sykes and she put on the best show of 2023 from a horn and overall cool ship standpoint!
Oh my gosh, Mike, how fun was that?! What a cool captain! Quite the show! And the ship! Wow! I wasn't familiar with it. What a history and what a nice looking ship!! You must have been so giddy filming this! And can you believe this scene is the end of December?! As much as I like snow, I am not complaining one bit over here. 😊 Great video Mike! I really enjoyed seeing the captain too! This video is definitely a favorite!
Seeing this incredible seventy five year old ship, Wilfred Skye's, hearing the horns telling all I'm here, with three last additional sounding of the horns to say, 'I'll be back'. What a testament to incredible engineering of the day this ship was designed and built. Think seventy five years of all that which this vessel was subject to, to see it today earning its keep with the maritime company operating this beautiful vessel. Another wonderful video to end the year, 2023!
Wow, a lady captain of a huge great lakes bulk carrier. It is very good to see a lady captain of a ship. Captain means many years of experience, training, knowledge, credentials and a lot of responsibility.
That beautiful lady sure isn't shy wow! What is sound off! Looking at 132.5 HZ, which is a C3 note, my oh my, what a beautiful lady she is! Thank you, Mike!
I bet she was having fun with the children!! Thanks Capt Lori for the amazing salutes!! WE love this so much. Wow, the history of the Sikes and the Fitz loading at the same time. I envision the captains probably spoke with one another during that time. wow, Wow, WOW for this exit!!!! Safe travels Capt and the crew and may 2024 be a wonderful one for you!!! Why am I tearing up!!!!
I hope you’re having a great Friday. Your profile photo is so beautiful with that sunset. Hey, this captain stepped up and made it the coolest ship departure of the year in Duluth.
Well, thank you for subscribing my friend in the United Kingdom. You have a lot of ship action out your way as well. I hope you are doing well. Happy weekend to my friend. I hope to speak with you soon. Thanks again. Cheers.
Now I know why I fell in love with these wonderful old ships they are so awesome. Jim thank you for sharing such an awesome ship. The modern ships of today are huge and technical wonders but they can never match these classics. Again thank you for sharing
Thanks Mike! Great horn and lots of it! Could be a farewell for the year? maybe the last trip to Duluth this year, season winding down. Another ship did that too the other day. (extra salutes).
Mike your enthusiasm is infectious! Thanks so much for the background information on these great ships...especially for those of us just being introduced to this world.😊
I knew that name sounded familiar! Thanks for making that Edmund Fitzgerald connection for us, Mike. A much better decision made that fateful day by the Sykes’ Captain Paquette. And here she is, still getting ‘er done! Thanks, Captain Lori, for giving us all a treat with the horn action. I didn’t really have a favorite ship or captain…I certainly do now!!Safe sailing to Captain Lori and the entire crew. Thanks, Mike, for this great video!
Absolutely love the history of the Wilfred Sykes. Plus she is a beautiful old school Laker. I love all the ships but the Old School Lakers have a special place in my heart especially the Arther Anderson. Bless Captain Laurie for all of the salutes to her boat fans!!! ❤❤
Incredible video Mike, wow!!! Love all the horn salutes to the bridge and crowd. Safe sailing to Captain Lori and her crew of the Wilfred Sykes. Just great all the way around!!!
Starting at 6:19, you can see a white small swinging boom near the rear of the pilot house. It is used to hoist items from the main deck up to the 3rd level. You can see another swinging boom starting at 7:18. It's directly above the 'W' in Wilfred. Very helpful to haul up goods to the main deck. This video ranks way up there for me! Thanks so much Captain Lori for that very, very rare set of 4 salutes. Will be so memorable for all of us Boat Friends.
Hi Chuck, Thanks for pointing out the swinging boom. I'd like to get your opinion about this. I was watching this video today of the Saginaw: ua-cam.com/video/0zVM5q-zuok/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared You can see it's swing boom on the starboard-side of the bow beginning at 2:00, and some good views of the bow thrusters at 2:16, 3:20, and 7:19. At 3:48 you can see some deck hands being swung out and lowered with the swing boom. Is this pretty common practice? On the Wilfred Sykes the swinging boom looks more centrally located near the bow (probably for hoisting to the 3rd level of the super structure, as you said), and the boom near its stern looks to be set too far back to be practical for off-loading deck hands. Is off-loading deck hands with the swinging boom pretty common? Thanks.
Hello Capt.!!! What a beautiful blue sky!! I never realized what the light on the lift bridge really looked like. Thanks for a closer view. The 12th Street beach looks very calm. You have it all to yourself. She is an awesome looking vessel!! I will have to add her to my list of Old School Laker favs. What a beauty of a ship. WOW, WOW, WOW. Capt. Lori, you are just awesome!!! I had goosebumps as she was heading out to the lake. I wish Captain Lori and her crew safe travels to Indiana. Mike, this definitely was one of the best videos of the year. Thank you so much for this. You do so much for us Boat Friends that we can never repay (at least that is how I feel). Happy Friday to you!!! Take care my friend and chat soon. 🙋🚢
