Hi Chris, just wanna say thank you for the videos, i have a pair of canaries, first time trying (unsuccessfully) to breed them, with lockdown been great fun learned a lot, thanks
You should use dummy eggs so when a canary lays replace the egg with a dummy then when the 4th egg is layed put all eggs back in that way all chicks hatch on the same day.other wise there will be 3 days between the first and last chick which can make a big difference in size.i have kept Irish fancy canary’s and gloster canary’s for years don’t have any birds now because I had to move love your vidoeos gives me some comfort while I don’t have my birds thanks
Hey Chris, firstly gotta say nice birds :), If you're having a problem with infertile/blind eggs I would suggest when you put you're pairs together that you remove all perches bar one from the cage. I've noticed and had issues in the past where the cock won't thread the hen right due cage size or his perception of it. What I do is when I put my pairs together I take all but 1 perch out and the one that remains I move to a lower rung. I found that it allows for for room for the birds. When the hen has laid her 4th egg I set the clutch under then hen and that way I'm usually guaranteed at least 4 chicks from the nest. Also I noticed that others has mentioned dummy eggs. These are great and inexpensive. Just swap out each laid egg for a dummy and when the hen has laid her 4th/5th egg replace the dummy for the real eggs and of course the perches. Hope you had a good season!!!!
My yellow female canary and red male canary have had 4 clutches of infertile eggs. I see them mate all the time. The male is a very loud and frequent singer. The female sits very well and loves building nests. They seem to love each other. Could the male or female be infertile? Neither are molting.
Hello there! I have been watching closely your UA-cam channel to learn more about canaries and their breeding habits and I have learned a lot! Now I have a question about this subject. Right now my female canary is sitting well on her eggs but apparently the eggs are infertile. Now I wanted to try again and I don't know what to do with the nest, the eggs and even with the cage (if I keep them together or not), cause maybe the infertile eggs were cause by my late action of getting them together....can you help me? Should I separate them and see if they get another shot? Do they need to mate again? Thank you for help!
Leave them together and just remove the eggs. Once the female removes the eggs they will breed again and in about two weeks she’ll start laying eggs in the nest.
Thank you for your quick answer. Because of this, now I have for the first time a baby bird hatched today. Apparently it's the only one for now. Let us see. Thank you so much!💛 @@birdnerd
The males many times will not sing as much when they are with the females. It could be that he is also molting or possibly not feeling good which could effect how they sing.
Hello, my canaries have laid 6 eggs and its been more than 14 days none of my eggs have hatched should i throw the eggs or maybe wait a couple more days? Thanks
@@birdnerd Hello i wanted to ask what if i get infertile eggs am i allowet to try again until i get at least 1 fertile egg or should i wait for the next breeding season i really want a baby
My canaries are breeding do they need light during the night or kept them at the dark room or without light at the night, And do they feed during the night there baby's please. Thanks
My canary laid her first 4 eggs. All were fertile one she kicked out and ate. Two have hatched, she sat on them but didn’t feed them. I just removed the two dead babies from the nest. One egg remains and I’m so worried this last one will face the same fate. My grandmother who gave me the pair said not to interfere, let them care for the babies. She has several successful breeding pairs. I just wish I could have saved these first two. I’ve provided the seed, greens, boiled egg , lots of clean water. Is there something I’m missing? When would my female lay again? Why do they not feed ?
Hi Birdnerd, do your birds get access to plenty of sunlight or natural light which is essential for the wellbeing of all birds, also are they confined to cages most of the time where they cannot exercise/fly properly? I have a male and female canary, they fly all over the livingroom with access to plenty of natural light, sunshine, only returning to their cages to sleep and, for the female, to incubate her single egg. Thank you. Best regards, Jeanne
I have my birds on a rotation schedule. When they are breeding I have them in the white breeding cages that you see in the videos the other time that they are not breeding which is 3/4 of the year I have them out in my large aviary that has year round access to sunlight and large space for the birds to fly.
birdnerd Thank you so much for reassuring me of this: I believe that anyone who wants to buy and keep all little captive birds should be vetted in the same way as larger animals from animal sanctuaries are, before being allowed to have the privilege of a vulnerable little bird’s life be entrusted in their hands or their lives or their homes with mandatory access to ‘free’ flight rather thsn being stuck in a tiny cage day after day - some of the photos and videoclips I have seen are heartbreaking - they might be small scraps of life but they deserve to be treated with care and respect, thank you again Birdnerd , Jeanne 🐤🐦
Question ? I have an 8 year old male canary he sings very good and loud is he still fertile? This is second round of nesting and eggs that not fertile what should I do should I change them what should I do with the eggs how can I start this over with a new female ?
@@birdnerd also when do the season end for breeding because I think my male is not singing at the moment some of them are molting and not singing can they still breed with the molt and not to sing
Stress temperature change and amount of light will trigger molt. Males take longer to condition than females. Nutrition is important as well as their health. It's important to distinguish infertile or dead in shell but fertilized. Some birds benefit from trimming around the vent feathers, different patterns for males and females, but leaving vent feathers intact as birds use them for aiming so to speak. Males (and females) claws should be trimmed as not to hurt the female while mating. If using artificial light for sunset its important to turn them off gradually so female can find the nest before dark, or have very dim light on but that may trigger molt if too bright. Good job.
Thanks, and forgot to mention....if dealing with low vigor but desirable male it's helpful to introduce competition nearby(another conditioned male) to awaken territorial and head of household instincts. Also, young males or females from July hatch won't be mature in following January.
My canary won't sit on her eggs. This is the 2nd time. This time she laid an egg then I guess she pushed the egg and she is sitting again for another egg I think.
I’ve had this female canary for nearly 3 years.. & earlier this spring I paired her with a male, and they are great together.. however, she’s laid a total of 4 clutches of eggs and none of them hatched. 🥺 what can I do? she recently laid another clutch, which should be hatching this week but the eggs are infertile.. Around 12 months is when you can let theM breed.

It can be. Let her try a second clutch. If it is infertile then it’s mostly your cock bird that’s the issue.
