My yard is higher than the patio cement. Every time it rained the dirt from the yard washed down on to the patio. I'd wash the patio down, and the dirty water would sit in one corner. I gave up, and edged a small trench around the patio, filled it with some pearock. Now the rain washes the patio for me! Great job on that patio, and thank the Lord for all those wonderful tools to do the job. I'm old enough to have used a push mower when it was fashionable. We've become spoiled over time, and I m loving it!

Instead of putting money into equipment, we hired a lawn service. They could not bring our grass back to life (too many cedar and for trees). So we followed their advice; we dug up the grass and put in more large plants and put down bark dust. .

Gonna show my age. 1958 my parents bought their first home. My job was to cut the yard with a reel mower, blades sharp enough to cut you for just looking at them. Solid steel wheels and the rear supported by a wooden roller. That mower was used until my dad "sprigged" st Augustine and used a dump truck load of chicken litter. After the yard took off my dad bought a western auto 2 cycle mower that the starter cord had to be wound around the fly wheel and to stop it a metal spring had to be pressed against the plug.
I don't miss either of those two mowers.

    • @bethmorano1452

Obviously being able to use this space at all will be a game changer for this lady. But one thing some may overlook is how much safer it is to walk on clean concrete than dirty. Clean concrete gives a lot more grip under the foot, which is really important for someone who is probably really weakened by fighting stage four cancer. She is far less likely to have a fall out there now!

Laughed about your trial of the reel mower. (It is quite a different experience than a motorized one.) Thank you for your kindness on persisting with renewing this property. Interesting difference with two tires on the wheelbarrow, would guess it is more stable. Good idea on the dumpster. Some items have worn out over time. Nice save on the chairs, etc. That was quite a change when you were done, particularly set-off by starting on the mowing. Your shoes are now very honorable.

Second time watching this video. Thank you for taking care of this lady. My little sister died from breast cancer. It was terrible. I wish I had lived close to her. Mom and I did go at Christmas and the family took Christmas dinner to the hospital and we all ate around her bed in her room. We made the mistake of then taking down her Christmas decorations and tree and cleaning the house top to bottom. She was very distressed because we took away her Christmas things and put them away. We thought we were doing her a favor. We were so wrong. She wanted to enjoy them when she came home. That was her last Christmas. It haunts me to this day. Im so sorry Holly.

Helpful hint. Use push power mower , lowest setting, to trim over grown grass on the concrete. It thins out the mass of grass, easier to see concrete edge, less time edging, and disperses mowed grass into yard. Then use your edger. Used this technique for years.

The grass/grade is higher than the top of concrete at it’s low point. A swale needs to be installed 2’-0” wide min. separating the concrete / grass grade difference. The swale can be filled with gravel & sloped to drain away from the patio. Currently the patio can not drain properly thus the dirt & mildew from the backed up water. The patio & grade where never coordinated. Typical residential construction!!!

Yes, having owned a small farm, you can pile a load of material in it and not fight load shifts or undulations in the ground as much. I have moved on to a 4-wheel hand dump cart. So much better than both, because you can really load it up, wheel it to where you need it, and then pull the dump lever and the load will start to dump. Pull the cart away quickly and it's all left behind. I was injured by a drunk driver rear-ending me at 45MPH while I was at a stop light and this really saves my back so I can work all day.
