I’m not a fan of stains or even dye except in rare cases or small amounts, however there can be too much of a good thing and sometimes solid wood builds can get a bit heavy especially if in your house you build everything yourself and later realize there’s too much brown. It hurt to see the mahogany color go just because it was beautiful however you did it tastefully, the grain showed through which is why I hate stains usually as grain can be lost especially with gel based stains but I think this was a nice idea. If you have a bathroom vanity where you want a pop of color while showing off the fact that you built something from solid hardwood, I think that green would be stunning and make for a unique piece. Or add it to a cabinet door, I can also see it being awesome for kids furniture and if someone loves patterned plywood with skateboard material perhaps dying your own veneer pieces would be a better option than hunting for retired skateboards which in my area are difficult to find. I love the concept, the table turned out great and I’m so sorry about your home and shop! I live in literally the heartland in sw KS and tornadoes are a real fear of mine too. I hope you can quickly have whatever needs rebuilt done and perhaps if adding on was a dream this made it possible but I’m glad you’re ok! In the 60’s my Mom was little when a tornado skipped over the neighbors and landed on their house ripping it apart. She has never forgotten how loud or terrifying and damaging it was. Stay safe and look forward to future content
Love the table ! Subscribed from Bermuda. As someone who has many close calls with hurricanes, I know that the woodworking gods and the weather gods sometimes compete ! Very sorry about your shop and home. Hope you are back in action soon !
Thank you! There’s a project I’m really excited about that I’ll be building with a portable setup while my shop is out of commission. Should be interesting!
So sorry about your shop man! But glad everyone is okay. Great video and nice table! I think the green dye was an interesting risk and turned out really beautiful.

I zoo love that you colored the wood a fun color, I have been hoping for someone to do just that for a long time. It looks great!!!! I must admit that is the way i love wood the best.
Man, just glad you’re okay. The table came out pretty cool. I wouldn’t have thought of the green like that. But after seeing yours, it makes me want to do that green with some maple Legs or something light for contrast. Just to see the difference. I think the rag look came out better than the brush. Sucks you had to scrape it all off haha. The legs were gorgeous as well. Perfect joint in the middle.
Love this. Reminds me of a large Sanyo radio cabinet my grandparents had with mahogany legs and green high gloss veneered doors and top. Sorry to hear of the damage you incurred. Hopefully you will be up and creating soon 😊
Oh no your shop 😮 😮😮 Very nice project and great perceverance! Maybe on such an awesome base add a mortice & tenon next time for some extra durability?
This green dye is inspired genius. It was such a Baller move to scrape it and then re-dye it. Respect! If the wood isn’t bending to your will - keep working it. The table came out beautifully. My heart broke when you showed the tornado damage. I think the table came out unscathed because you put so much love into it. Is it possible that it’s being spared was a gift granted by the woodworking gods as a Thank You? I’m glad you are safe. I subscribed. When you are able, we all look forward to seeing your future creations.
Wow, just wow. Absolutely stunning table! You are very talented. I had my wife watch the video just for the surprise ending! I hope you recover soon. I did my part, liked commented and subscribed. Now I'm off to play the drinking game!😂
A great experiment with green dye and green poplar wood might have given you more options for other shades of green for this project. I have no idea if this would work, but it would be cool to try out. Thanks for your video and fun approach to building furniture! Keep up the great work!
The woodworking on this table looks fantastic! If you want to get vibrant colors that make your piece “pop” you need to stop using stain or staying alone. You need to add the dye to your lacquer and tone your pieces. Toner will allow you to get desired effect that will level up your work. Use Mohawk products. They have been around forever and have unlimited options.
I didn’t! I’ve had mixed experiences with tinted clear coats. I feel like sometimes it makes the color look to flat. To be fair, that could be a me problem
@@alteredgraincustoms9891 if it’s highly figured I’ve seen people stain it a dark color and then sand back so they the dark areas are emphasizing the grain and then put color over it too so there is more definition. Also I believe some woods like alcohol or other liquids more than water.
When I saw just the tabletop I was really doubting the color choice. But I gotta say, coupled with the walnut it looks awesome. It has a regal feel to it. Well done
Holy ending surprise! Wow! I've coincidentally spent nearly all day researching DIY options for protection against those before noticing your video post.
ive found that if it is figured maple then it will take the dye well, but plain maple wont unless you use sanding sealer and mix dye with a clear and spray on
@@warmtonecustomguitars there are a lot of factors, I always use a shading lacquer over the base dye, he was mixing it with water I mix it with alcohol usually but you can put that stuff right in to the sanding sealer
A tinted lacquer would work well for an even color, but I was trying to accentuate the grain here! Maybe I’m wrong, but I think if you want to get that grain to pop, you need to use a nicely figured piece of wood. Without it, you’re basically putting lipstick on a pig.
Sorry to hear and see that your workshop got destroyed, I hope you are insured, oh sometimes it doesn’t always work out, as I have been waiting nearly 2 years for my roof to be restored on my property in France that has hail stone damage, holes big enough to stick your head through, though I think I have finally got a result, good luck for the future future, I do actually like the coffee table, France

The problem wasn't the maple. It was how you dyed it. If you watch how guitar makers dye maple, they dont just hit it with one color. For this, they'd probably dye it black first. Then sand it back a bit before the green - maybe even another color in between. I don't understand it all fully, but the difference it makes is huge. It could have looked as good as the mahogany - maybe even better. But yours came out great in the end. Well done.
I appreciate it! It could have been a lack of skill on my part, but on all those maple samples, I tried a variety different dyes, sanding, and then more dye. I wasn’t able to achieve anything that looked nice on the plain maple, but I loved the look of just the green dye on mahogany!
@@alteredgraincustoms9891. The trick to staining maple is to use water dye stain only, apply it with a spray gun and do not wipe it off. Wiping makes it blotchy. For future reference, you'll get a more consistent color between your samples and your actual work if you apply your dye stain with a gun.
