You ARE Iron Man.
This really puts Tony into perspective.
When those terrorists kidnapped him, a total stranger gave their life so Tony could make something better of himself. He immediately shut down his company's biggest source of income because it was the right thing to do. Then he tried to throw away everything so he could focus only on making up for the wrongs he allowed to happen ("there is nothing except this. There's no art opening, no charity, nothing to sign. There's the next mission and nothing else").
That alone gives you the sense that he doesn't want anybody else to get hurt. You travel into the Avengers by when he's already lightened up a bit, and the only person he really has a problem with is Cap. Why? Because he felt like Cap drew his father's attention.
Then we get to the end of the movie and he flies through the wormhole. We see everything. We see all of the Chitauri waiting on the other side to come through. This obviously freaks him out. Iron Man 3 happens. He helps SHIELD with their helicarriers. He starts working with Banner to try creating Ultron because he's seen what awaits Earth. And then Scarlet Witch hits him with that vision and makes everything significantly worse. He sees his teammates, his friends lying dead, and he feels like it's because HE hasn't done enough to protect people ("I see a suit of armour around the world." "That sounds like a cold world, Tony." "Yeah well, I've seen colder.")
Civil War almost feels like a backtrack in Tony's development, with him trying to restrict the Avengers. But he's screwed up so much. He's so traumatised by that woman's words, and Ultron, and the Mandarin that he's not thinking clearly. Perhaps logically, but not clearly. And then he finds Peter. Smart kid, capable, etc. He sees Peter as a sort of chance to redeem himself to some extent ("I just wanted to be like you." "I wanted you to be better."). That's why he got mad about Peter taking on Vulture and the illegal weapons shipment. He doesn't want Peter to be immature or arrogant like he was, and still is.
Ever since Yinsen died, Tony's had a major cross between a guilt complex and a messiah complex. He might not be the most tortured Avenger, but that doesn't mean he's not up there.

To be honest, up until he saw the video of his parents' murder, Tony WAS thinking clearly. Certainly more so than Steve. You can't have a group of mostly Americans able to go into other countries, attack foreign nationals, destroy a shit ton infrastructure, injure a lot of people, and then just go home with no accountability. That's not how the world works. It was eventually going to cause a war. When it was one man it was bad enough, but a team with advanced weaponry and no limits? Tony saw the writing on the wall but Steve was still feeling burned by SHIELD's betrayal and wouldn't see reason. He probably would have eventually and Tony would have wrestled the accords into a compromise but Steve always loses his head where Bucky is concerned and Ross is a corrupt douchebag.
Took a while to read but nice
He was water boarded in Afghanistan, he had the arc reactor put in awake and with no pain meds. He has been through a lot. He’s been tortured before. I feel he’s one of the best characters the mcu has for mental health because he struggles with it constantly.
I still can't get over Steve's betrayal and cowardice in Civil War. He always did the right thing and if he and Bucky had been honest than I would have been fine with what Bucky did. I understand he was not in control, but Steve was. Even if he didn't know it was Bucky, which let's be honest he thought it was that is why he keep it a secret, he knew the accident was a lie. He lied for selfish reasons because he didn't have the decency to face Tony and be honest with him. Bucky said he remembers all his victims and he also lied, but he never pretended to be the moral authority or give Tony shit about lying. Tony's is constantly betrayed by the people closest to him. Bucky had just gone on a rampage and now Tony finds out that they have been lying to him. For all he knows nothing Steve has ever said is true, he could be a hydra agent. Tony always faced up to his mistakes and tried to fix them, Cap ran away, leaving a condescending apology note. Tony tried to compromise on the accords, tried to get Bucky help, when he could have been thrown in prison and protected Wanda after she violated him. All people went on with was but Bucky is sad and people hurt him.
This is one of the best character studies I've ever seen. I'm not even the hugest Tony Stark fan but this honestly makes me love him so much, you really captured his bravado and his insecurities so well, thank you for this!!!

There are many people who love Tony and many others who hate him.
I love him, he is my favorite because of his sense of humor and how he is always trying to be better and evolve.
He is a hero with some flaws like when he gets angry he can get quite impulsive like at The end of Civil War but at the end he is a great hero always wanting to do his best.

With BUcky, Pietro and other characters, Tony is kind of forgotten or people fall into writing him a bit shallow but his alcoholism and attitude is a mechanism of self-defence. With Clint (my favourite) I write him with amixture of comic Clint and MCU Clint... I loved Matt Fraction Hawkeye comics but Jeremy is so dreamy... :)

oh this song made me incredibly sad... "who can you trust when everything you touch turns to gold" suits Tony so well because it works both ways; his hands create beautiful, marvelous things, but gold is cold, and gold is not alive. When you think about King Midas's story, it makes sense that being able to do such miracles is only a punishment - and Tony ends up losing all that matters to him, and carries the guilt of that. "You destroy everything you touch", I think that's something he must have told himself many times. And the way the video was edited, the close-ups of his sad, tired face when the chorus came, all of this made me ache inside.

Wow, this is great! I wouldn't have connected this song to Tony, but it fits so perfectly! Great choice matching the lyrics. I loved how it showcased Tony's development and changed mindset over the course of the MCU, only at first does it have its appeal and all. Tony has changed a lot and this just perfectly illustrates his development. The "dying to feel again" part was also wonderful! And "I was just trying to be like you" "I wanted you to be better" were great lines to finish it off.
