      @@amandabaxter4888 i don't think it's like that. These freshly hatched snakes are hopeless when it comes to predators. Helping other eggs in the clutch would be them wasting their own chance. Instead of one eaten hatchling you'd get two.

    That "baby smell" you talk about is the smell of amniotic fluid. Our brains are wired to like that smell, so we grow attached to the babies and want to protect them. This is why so many people enjoy the smell of baby animals.

    • @Korvidcore
      @Korvidcore 4 роки тому +34

      Interesting facts, so if I shove my head into a pregnant animal I will like the smell? Basically we like the smell of baby juice

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 4 роки тому +91

      Baby smell isn’t caused by amniotic fluid (although it does have a distinctive smell) and we certainly wouldn’t have that reaction to a non-primate baby smell. If that were the case you would have that reaction every time you cracked open a chicken egg. In this case it’s most likely a learned association, which are especially strong with smell and emotion. She likes baby snakes, therefore she likes how they smell.

      It probably just falls into their substrate. For example, puppies lose their baby teeth like humans do, so I assume that the process would be similar for most other animals. Of course, there is always the possibility of them swallowing them. I've heard of people accidentally swallowing teeth before, so it is possible.

    My partner and I got an absolutely adorable baby hognose snake last February, and for the past couple weeks I've been thinking more and more seriously about getting another one and trying to breed them (YES entirely thanks to Snake Discovery's egg hatching videos!), and THEN I found this wonderful video miniseries. Now I'm thinking I could actually DO THIS? and I would love to! Thank you so much for your amazing work!!
