  • We're going on a quest! Quests of Yore, Barley's Edition is a new Tabletop Role Playing Game based on the movie Onward from ‪@pixar‬. This is part 1 of 2 of my Parent's Guide to Being a Quest Master!
    theop.games/products/game/que...
    Part 1 (This Video) - What is a Quest Master, how does Quests of Yore work, and why should you take on the role of Quest Master for your family?
    Part 2 - How to do all the things - How to use the Tome of Quests, how to form dice pools, how to use support cards, and more!
    #QuestsofYore #TTRPG #FamilyRPG #TheOP #Onward #QuestofYoreRPG #BarleysEdition #QuestMaster #QuestsofYoreBarleysEdition #HowtoPlay #LearntoPlay #QuestsofYoreGame #QuestsofYoreBoardgame
    Quests of Yore Barley's Edition was our first experience playing a true RPG and my (Daniel, Kidsplaining Dad) first experience being a Quest Master - the Quests of Yore equivalent of a DM. It was intimidating, I was nervous, it took a bit of work, and I could not be HAPPIER that I did it. If you've never played an RPG before, it's different than your normal board game. First, in Quests of Yore, there's no board. The game is story driven, and the Quest Master leads the other players on the story.
    I'm making these videos because I know other parents will be just as intimidated by Quests of Yore as I was, and I want to help others overcome that intimidation. Quests of Yore has been such an incredible experience, and my time leading everyone on this journey has been just so incredibly rewarding.
    In Quests of Your Barley's Edition players will go in a quest in an immersive RPG experience. Quests of Your Barley's Edition is a full on, complete RPG - Role Playing Game. Quests of Yore Barley's Edition is a game where players take on the roles of their characters, build back stories, personalities, character traits, and more. The game takes place mostly in your imagination. There are some item cards and tiles for battles, but most of the game is a story driven narrative where players are guided through an adventure by the Quest Master. As Quest Master, your job is to lead your adventurers through the story of Quests of Yore, present them with scenarios, and then let them decide if and how they want to proceed.
    This video will teach you most of thing things you need to know to learn how to play for Quests of Yore and take on the role of Quest Master. While this dopes teach you how to play and how to be a quest master, much of the role is learned through experience, so in this video series we will go through what it means to be a quest master, what you need to know to play Quests of Yore, and we'll prepare you for this new role, leading your adventurers on an epic quest!
    Full disclosure - I approached The OP about sponsoring this video because I saw how amazing this experience was for us, but I also saw huge potential for other families to be too intimidated to give it a show, and I wanted to create a guide for other parents who were starting Quests of Yore from the exact same place I was - having ZERO experience with any type of TTRPG, but wanting to enjoy the experience with their family.

    Great stuff. Don't let anyone tell you how you have to play roleplaying games. I wrote the game and I DON'T ALWAYS DO VOICES! I don't always refer to characters by their names...sometimes I say the player's name. I never wear costumes. Yet every roleplaying game I play, we have fun.
    You're doing a fantastic job. This is what the game is for. Families. Kids. Experiences in the ONWARD world.

      I just scored this to play with my kids (12 and 10) because they loved Onward! But then, we already play D&D, and MechWarrior, etc. But oh, wow, the theming of this game is so awesome.

    Not every dungeon master in D&D uses props and voices. It is all about the quality of fun! As you grow in the game, you will find yourself pushing yourself further. It sounds like you have a very good handle on the game. Nice review. That side experience with Jared is EXACTLY why these games work! Good job. It looks like you're on the road to becoming a quality Quest Master.

      Thanks so much! This really has been an awesome experience, and The OP did a fantastic job making this game accessible for newcomers to the genre like myself.

    Cheetos with chopsticks is EXACTLY how its done! This was excellent - we're walking our kids through their first RPG too Starport, and I'm with you on NOT doing voices. My girls will do their own voices thank you very much!

    Fantastic video. You echoed so many of my concerns and hesitations for taking the first step into role playing games with my kids. The Onward brand/world definitely opened the door but your video is the one that gave me the confidence to actually buy it. Thank you!

    Enjoyed the movie, just not sure if I'd rather play this or regular D&D with my kids when they're old enough :) I also own hero kids rpg.

    About to start part 2. Thanks for the videos. I’m going to start our first game and was very intimidated. I’ve never played tabletop rpgs either. Always been a tabletop board game player.

    I got this game and after a week of reading the guide, I'm starting my first session with my family this weekend. I got some battle mats I had from dungeons and dragons and I'm wondering how I could incorporate using battle mats in this game system and how to handle movement, combat, and etc.

    • @PlaytheGameHQ
      @PlaytheGameHQ  3 роки тому +1

      I’m not familiar with the battle mats, but movement and combat are simple, just number of spaces for movement and range for attack/defense. If you wanted to use those instead of the hexagons that come with it just try to get as close as you can to the layout in the book.

      In video 2 Of the parents guide series I go through combat, so that will hopefully clear up any questions.

    There are a lot of different opinions on how to run RPGs, and D&D. But the statement that not doing voices, not setting mood, not wearing costumes makes you a bad QM (DM, GM, whatever) is not correct.
    Do not let anyone tell you you need to do anything outside of your comfort zone to be "good" at RPGs, if everyone at the table is having fun you are doing ans awesome job! Just put in as much as you think is fun

      The only thing required to be a great QM is being willing to try doing it. 😁

    Thanks for this serie, I’m just preparing for my first Quest Master role with this game. Can you tell me more about the replayabillity of this game? Also, can someone who was playing this game become a master later on? My older daughter wants to be QM at some point.

    • @PlaytheGameHQ
      @PlaytheGameHQ  3 роки тому +1

      The game itself has 12 sessions and a prologue, so 13 total - and we've had to replay some. If you're wanting to actually go back with the same people and replay it, you would know what's going to happen, but If you really wanted to you could, and maybe play with different characters so you can try out different abilities maybe. As for replayability outside of your initial group, there are printable character sheets on the OP's website, so you could pass it on to another family, set up another group, etc. None of the components other than character sheets are changed or damaged during play.
      I would say the same person needs to be QM through the entire quest, but Jarred really wants to be QM for his friends at some point, so you probalby wouldn't want to switch up those roles in between your play through, but could definitely do it in future playthoroughs.

      @@PlaytheGameHQ thank you for this answer. Did you usually play one session at one sitting?

    • @PlaytheGameHQ
      @PlaytheGameHQ  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, they have typically taken around an hour+ and with the prep work, it seems best to keep it to one at a time. We schedule it, and I know others who have made it a weekly event for their family.
