[0:00] Hello everyone, this is Matsusue from Bonsai Suishoen. This time we continue the topic of Japanese black pine care. Last time we talked about needle thinning("hasukashi"葉透かし), and this time we will follow up with decandling("mekiri"芽切り). If you are a beginner, please make to check out this series. Thank you very much for your support.
[0:23] Please take a look at this branch here. This is how it looks like after needle thinning. Here are the new buds that came out this year. Very supple and and vibrant, and this center one here is especially strong. How to decandle a branch like this is the topic for today.
[0:47] First let's take a look at the branches in this area. [camera zoom in] This bud is stronger in comparison to its friends. Its vigor is manifested in this very long and thick stalk here. For a strong bud like this, we leave about 0.5~1cm at the base, and cut it off like this. After the cut is made, be careful not to forget about the secondary bud here. This small bud here. On the right you see old foliage, and on the left is the secondary new bud. Please take these ones off as well. Like this. Horizontal small buds like this also need to be removed. If we don't do this, new bud won't come out in about 10 days time. We now do the same thing over the entire structure.
[2:09] So now we proceed to decandle these other branches. The previous bud was really strong, so we left a stalk about 1cm long. This one over here is not weak either, but is not as strong as the previous one. There is a subtle difference in strength. So here we will leave only about 5mm. For an only slightly strong bud. Over here is a bud of equal strength, and we also leave about 5mm. This one is also about the same, leaving 5mm and cut off the rest.
[2:44] Now there are two more buds remaining. They are the weakest of the bunch. For weaker buds like this, we just cut them off at the base. If you look closely over here, you notice there is one single pair of old needle attached here. Even though there is only one pair of old needle remaining, a new bud will still come out after we make the cut.
[3:12] Finally we move on to this bud with more old leaves attached. This one here. Because this is also a weak bud, we won't leave either 1cm nor 5mm, and cut it off flat at the base, flush with the old leaves. This way, weaker buds will replace the strongest buds, medium buds will replace the medium ones, and the strongest second flush will replace the originally weakest buds. We are trying to eliminate the difference in strength.
[3:52] Next time we will discuss pruning ("kirikomi"切り込み). Most people can do both needling thinning and decandling, but are often baffled by the process of pruning, so that is what we will demonstrate next time. Please make sure to check it out.
