    Here are some of my thoughts on driving and commuting in my 1969 Volvo 164, 2 to 4 hours every day in Los Angeles. I adjusted the carbs again as a break from work on the ever-demanding Italian cars in this garage. Save me…

      But people were a lot smaller back then, now you have big fat people today. The car wouldn't do no good today. So yeah of course Swedish people are a lot smaller. In North America not so much.

      @@Slacksfifth I´m almost 2 meters tall and around 130Kg´s. I was of course a child in the 70´s. But the good size runs in the family. Generally speaking, I don´t think we are known for being small in Sweden. I drive a 245 with modified seat to make my legs fit. The only cars i sit ok in is the W140 S-class and the Citroën DS & XM. I´m fortunate enough to have all of them. So there are of course better cars than the Volvo´s. But it´s hard ignoring a car that saved your life.

    I have a 1985 245 that I'm struggling with a bit, has a smattering of issues that are hard to pin down, and yes, leaks. I'm hoping to get on it this summer/spring, but yeah, driving cars this old with great frequency is a struggle. I'm 26, and I'm realizing a bit that it's a tough balance to gain mechanical aptitude and self reliance (which is why I jumped into old cars) while maintaining a normal life with a job and other passions. If can seriously devour time.

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  2 роки тому +9

      If you can use “aptitude” and “self reliance” correctly in a sentence you’re already doing really well! The good news is that the 240 started life as a pretty comfortable and easy machine, and little was changed from your model year through to 1993.
      I really enjoy old cars, but believe me I’m not passionate about a career in automotive work. Hobby? Yes. The older I get, the more urgent my life goals feel. Having these toys take my time pulls me away from the dreams I would rather be chasing. It’s like a bad addiction at best, and financial necessity at worst. But I do have a sense of pride in my abilities and understanding of even their smallest mechanical intimacies. But so what? It’s better to chase dreams than vintage car parts.
      Eew, a rant.
      Best of luck to you. Remember to clean the ignition control module connector!

      @@DavidBello i really feel that. i've definitely gotten sucked into spending lots of time and money on keeping two 30+ year old vehicles reliable for me. But I've got to say it does add substantial quality to day-to-day life to just always cruise around in something cool from a different time. I feel a little ashamed having gotten into cars in a lot of ways especially since it's a dying technology and ICE will soon be considered old man nonsense but sometimes you just gotta enjoy the things you enjoy

      My thought also! Volvo 140 and 164 were large cars, yet they are small when compared to the most common vehicles they will share the road with today.
      It's sad and wrong that SUVs are the default vehicle in "modern times."

  • @mayflowerlash11
    @mayflowerlash11 2 роки тому +4

    David you must be a time traveller from an earlier age. Moderns don't want to know about how having to pay attention while driving makes you a better driver, they want self drive cars, just get me to my destination I don't care how. But there are enough oldies and youngies who do appreciate what you say to keep these old cars alive.
    I used my 940 to tow a trailer with concrete pavers today. 4th keeps dropping back to 3rd (solenoid issue) but it was a joy. As you say classic cars are meant to be driven. Fender benders are a risk that must be taken. You of course will minimise the risk by careful driving. An old car, not driven, slowly dies in the garage then one day it's a non starter and it gets to be too much to fixed.
    Plus while it has sat in the garage NO ONE has enjoyed driving it.
    And I do agree, a daily driver needs to be reliable and comfortable and modern.
    Have one of each.

    Great video! I'm in the area in Pasadena and I'm a proud owner of a 1989 volvo 240 DL. In the past year that I've owned the car, its been the PERFECT daily driver and I've put 30,000 miles on my old reliable. I fell in love with my "Brick" because it was so obscure and niche to me but because of that very reason I find it to be a bit lonely being one of relatively few Volvo enthusiasts out here in SoCal. I work at an independent Volvo shop so that kind of helps with that situation but I hope I could run into you on the road some day! I've yet to see a Volvo 164 in person yet and as a diehard Volvo fanatic, I'd LOVE to change that! Again, beautiful story and I'd love to hear more about your journey with your MEGA COOL vintage Volvo.

    When i got my 850 t5 i noticed with the windows down and some hard driving id be left with my eyes almost watering from the fumes.. I found the vents in the boot/trunk wells of the cars had been broken and air was free to move in out as it pleased. With my windows open it dragged in the air from the rear of the car. Have a look around the trunk area for holes or gaps. Tape them up like i did and no more fumes in the cabin.

    Dave, use the lightest key chain in the ignition lock. Also, come to a complete stop, press the clutch fully in, place the gear shift in third / fourth to stop the gear box shaft spin, and with fully pressed clutch pedal;, engage third. Should be no grind. Grind is bad. Also, when at a sustained stop, disengage the gear and release the clutch pedal. Pressing the clutch pedal at a RxR or or red light can cause faster clutch complement wear. Thank you.

      Yes that is a big bonus. I had fun doing a head gasket on a B20 recently, and it was beyond simple to finish in 7 hours. That’s coming up soon in another video. But I do like the certain models which have the right balance of electronic convenience and reliability. I guess that’s more Toyota, because all P2/3 Volvos want VIDA/DICE to tell you what the problem even is! Though many a pre-OBD (d-jet, k-jet, LH2.0) user is stumped by the difficulty of proper flow-chart diagnostics. I guess it depends on where/how you wish to become proficient.

    Dear David Bello.
    👍👌👏 This is a well done resume.
    So what is your life dream? Maybe becoming a well known and successful actor? At least in my opinion you have all the prerequisites for a career like that (for instance: I will never forget the extremely impressive performance you did with showing the wonderful Lexus). Or would you like to be a documentary maker? What is it, Mr. Bello? If it isn't too private or a secret, I would appreciate to know your plans for the future (besides the oldtimer/Volvo hobby). Will we viewers at least always have the pleasure to watch this channel with it's great content?
    2) I simply don't know respectively I'm not able to understand why you are struggling around so much with carburetors instead of having a reliable fuel injection. What I do understand is, that when you park a car and only drive it once a year or even less, carburetors can be better respectively easier to maintain/repair.
    3) Do you think that Volvo oldtimer cars are kind of leaky because of bigger tolerances?
    4) Are you planning to kind of fix the gorgeous green paint on at least Ivy's trunk hood? Maybe a kind of patina repair = spraying new paint on and kind of roughing it afterwards so that it matches the surrounding old, original paint? I would definitely love to see something like that. Additionally I think that Ivy deserves to look a little bit better.
    As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards, luck and health to all of you.

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  2 роки тому +3

      1) definitely to be a working actor. Movies, TV, voice over, theatre, I’ll take any work where I can get it. I can’t seem to get away from old Volvos so the channel is at no risk of going stale.
      2) I could turn Ivy to fuel injection, but it’s all a matter of resources/priorities. I like keeping a car stock whenever possible, and I made the road trip without the opportunity to rebuild the carbs. Afterwards, I had no money to do so.
      Lately my xc90 has been in the shop, so my 164 has been the daily driver in 2022. Ergo, my thoughts here. The XC90 is also a bit too inefficient with fuel consumption for my long daily commutes to all the odd jobs I have to work to make these ends meet. In short, it’s the classic inverse relationship between wanting time to do things and having to work for the ability to have them.
      3) it may be bigger tolerances, but definitely seal design and technology has improved with newer cars. Much of this could also just be user error when installing, or imperfections in the various brands of gaskets to imperfections in the mismatched pieces I installed from various old B30 engines. In the case of the rear main seal and transmission leak, it’s due to things that were beyond my immediate repair (groove in crank, clearance in tunnel) and I’ll have to remove the transmission to get a second attempt at sealing. That’s a big job for me to do without pay, and I instead top off fluids as necessary.
      4) that idea has been in my head a lot lately. Matching the paint is the big trouble. I would love a “cheap” factory green paint job, but I’ll need the time to put the car away and have other drivers. Plus the more I think about it, the more it’s worth it to get past “cheap” and give Ivy a quality paint job. Since that would make the seats stick out like a sore thumb, the budget snowballs a bit, and I end up doing nothing. Your idea for the coverage and weathering of at least the rusted/faded portions is the best next step.
      The big next step for my household this year is moving to a place with a garage and space for me to work from home. I have a customer car that I want to fix up for a good amount of money for my time, and I won’t have to commute 2-4 hours every day. Wish me luck. Thanks for your comments :)

    The oldness on the 126 is a PRO not a con when it comes to an accident.... The 126 is STEEL where as BOTH those new cars are 90% plastic, take your steel hammer and whack one of those new cars PLASTIC bumper and then take your plastic hammer and hit the STELL bumper on that 126 and see which one takes more damage...... IF you got into a wreck with them both your not only going to walk away in that in 126 your PROBALLY going to DRIVE away, that Volvo weighs 2736 lbs of STEEL, that 2022 is 3200 ish of plastic, Also that 126 is an absolute BLAST to drive as compared to either of those newer car your just a lemming following everyone off the cliff because that 126 has SOUL and the 2022 is a soulless hunk of plastic.... I've daily driven a 1977 Buick Skylark for the last 15 years and have 5k, MAYBE into it, and that includes the $800 I paid for it. Over that 15 years my brother has bought 4 new cars and made payments on each one of those and then he wonders why I have money to travel and go on vacation..... it's because I drive a NICE older car that will literally last me forever and he's making payment after payment after payment for a car he has to throw away in 200,000 miles because that's all it's built to last for. and when i rebuild my classic engine engine and trans I can do it over a 3 day weekend with my buddy and a case of beer, it takes a team of techs and engineers 6 weeks worth of planning and work just to change your oil in the new cars. Give me my classic with natural soul any day over these newer soul less hunks of plastic.
