Interesting that these very experienced hunters all speak fondly of the versatility of the good old 30-06.
30-06 is a pure legend. The caliber that kiled more games than any other on the world, and more versatile than any other world catridge. If i could have only one rifle,it would be a 30-06.
I once had a long conversation with Mark Selby, Harry’s son. He told me the story of Robert Ruark purchasing two rifles from the estate of W.D.M. Bell. A Westley Richards double as I recall and more significantly the .275 Rigby which Bell had previously made so famous. As Ruark was Mark’s godfather, Robert gifted both those rifles to him. Many years later, Mark was approached by Rigby to purchase the .275. He said he mentioned what he believed to be an outlandish price and Rigby immediately agreed. The second most famous rifle Rigby ever produced, Harry Selby’s .416 at that time was in the possession of a friend and safari client of his father’s and was not for sale at any price. Truly enjoyed the video as I’m a huge fan of these writers and their works.
this is a superb video, one of the most enjoyable info packed productions i have ever seen, at the end of my sixth decade, i have perused and enjoyed many of the writers featured in real time back in their day, and now want to revisit them all. for new hunters wanting to embrace the lifestyle, these writers are the gateway to passion, responsibility, and humility. well done, well done!
Really great content. I've always caught crap for carrying a 30-06 - it's always either too much or not enough. I'm also a big fan of the 9.3X62, it's the African '06. I guess I just don't like magnum cartridges.
The 9.3 is awesome and under appreciated -one of my favorites.
.30-06 is an incredibly versatile round, I've no idea why people would give you crap for it. At least where I'm at, it definitely the most popular game round, that and .270/.308
@@ggmanatee 30-06 is a pure legend. The caliber that kiled more games than any other on the world, and more versatile than any other world catridge..If i could have only one rifle,it would be a 30-06.
Don’t forget to mention that an entire subspecies of elk were named after president roosevelt. Absolute legend.
Teddy Roosevelt was not only a hunter but a great conservation hunter🙌
i love Capstick, actually have all of his books
I absolutely loved Capstick’s books. I have all his books. 😋
Bat Tru me too!
Capstick is well known to have played very loosely with the truth. Said another way, he never let the truth get in the way of a good story...and he did know how to tell a good story.
"The average native couldn't track a wounded hippo through a fresh snow bank" If Capstick was not always truthful in his stories, so what. His way with words and levity has given me many hours of enjoyment! Very nice video! I enjoyed it!
Exactly. Before the age of the internet, it's obvious that most nonfiction authors embellished much of their stories for the entertainment of the reader. I think Corbett and O'Connor took a more straightforward and calculated approach, but the writing definitely doesn't grab you like Hemingway and Capstick could.
I definitely enjoy watching Meat Eater by Steve Rinella I have a couple of his books. I also enjoy Ron Spomer's stuff too. His You-Tube videos are informative. I also like Craig Bodington and Jack O'Connor. The think the consensus with most of these guys who hunt professionally and are out door writers, when it comes to cartridge selection is that the 30-06 and .375 H&H are pretty much gospel. I do own both rifles. Don't get much use out of them because I do a majority of my hunting in VA and PA hunting whitetails. I prefer the good ole 7x57mm. If I hunt Black bear, I do bring out the 30-06.
i have by chance gone BACK to this video. It is a most prolific and productive piece of "boredome" you did . I did find new things to analize . Thanks a lot!!! By the way mine peered cartridges is the old and very unknown 7,65x54 in an Argentine Mauser! Otherwise I go for the 30-06 and the other international available cartridge, the 308!
Lol, brought me back to memory lane when I was reading magazines and books on guns and hunting decades ago. It's funny to hear people like buddington describe as an old sage when back in my day he was one of the new kids on the block; my how things change when you're not looking! Lol.
My wife and I both agreed we want to hunt and prepare our kill to eat. We are both want to learn this hobbie and skill so we can keep the tradition and pass it to the kid will will raise in the future. Your channel is honestly a blessing. Thank you 🙏🏼
This video made my chainsaw chain sharping go by quick at work.
Really believe the 30-06 would be a great round for us to learn with and eventually reload. We are saving up for are first rifle just after owning our first gun (Beretta m9a1 9mm CA compliant)
Northern California has it to offer us in terms of Game and locations.
Your Chanel is a blessing on us beginners.
Something impressed me about u thru your writing: hope u guys are successful have fun . No I'm year late / i I have magical powers it'll still help
This speaks even more, years later with the current events. We can only image how this all will shape the world in the future. God bless! And thank you
I always liked Sam Fadala and his book on the 30-30/Winchester '94.
Good job man, the way you put this together was pretty sweet.
Excellent video. Being solely a ram, sheep, and deer hunter myself, I enjoy Jack O Connor's writing's on the. 270 Winchester. I grew with a .243, but have taken most game with my model 70 in 270.
I would just like to say that I frequent Ron Spomer's content, and I think Steve Rinella is the best thing to happen to the hunting community's public image in the last 30 years. I also frequent your content, DD, and think you do an outstanding job. Thanks, and keep em comin!
Ohh NO!! Sir, you didn't borred at all!! Excelent vídeo, thank you much for sharing! May I sugest that, in a future vídeo, mention Gary Sitton. He was one of a kind!!! Man, I miss him so much. May God have him in eternal peace! Just like him, I'm a hardcore hunter, hard drinker, profound lover of the venerable Winchester modelo 70, and the .300 win mag. Mention him, please, let us pay him the due tribute. Thank you much!
You know at first I didn’t really enjoy your videos, but I have continued to watch then and honestly have grown to enjoy when you post content
Is it to early to ask for a part two?
I have enough to easily do a part 2!
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 You made a great video. I would love to see a part 2.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 I second that! I'd love a part two. Recently found you and love the content.
Kenneth Anderson is my go to, after Jim Corbett.
I canceled my television subscription and sold the tv. I too turned to my books for REAL and TRUE information.
That was great DD. Sorry it has taken me so long to watch it. Very thorough. I'm 62 and have read many of the men's works.
When I was a kid my Grandfather gave me his copy of Jack O'Conner's "The Hunting Rifle" along with many other gun books. This book and Gene Hill's column in Field & Stream set the tone and perception of hunting for me as young man.
i think it's great that the man responsible for the 338 win mag didn't miss a chance to piss on jack oconners grave lol.
I really appreciated this, & will be sharing with my father. He grew up in a time when hunting was necessary for survival - as we are now returning to.
This was your best video yet, thank you!
@Mr. Shlock True.
I fear there simply isn't enough livestock to support the population.
...and I don't want to see my beautiful country in times of wreckage and despair.
African Rifles and Cartridges by Taylor has taught me very much about them, and what to look for in seeing rifle and ammo combos that turns up in may ways .
I really liked this video I was totally focused on it from start to finish and I have many of the books you featured. I think your opinion of Boddington is spot on. I became a follower of his writings mostly at first because he is left handed as am I. His experience is so wide and deep that it deserves attention.
What do You hunt with,i have tikka T3x hunter 30-06 and blaser r8 9,3x62 all left hand very accurate, Adam from Poland
Thank you for a VERY welcome diversion from the dreary things all over everywhere at this time. As a .25-06 and a .280 Remington fan I was also partially rewarded. :)
Both underrated cartridges
Ron spomer is just so freaking friendly
Well done. I grew up reading my dad's Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and Field and Stream magazines, and going through his old hunting books. He's gone now, and so are the books. But this makes me want to start haunting used bookstores to see if I can dig some of these old tomes up. Thanks for doing this.
One of the best videos on hunting books ever made! Keep up the good work. Best from Norway.
You have one of the best channels on youtube. I don’t understand why you don’t have more subscribers.
Wonderful. I’ve been watching your videos non stop during the stay at home directive. That was a lot of work and thousands of hours of reading, and you delivered it to me over a wonderful hour of enjoyment.
Good on you for citing the 30-03.
Fascinating video. Can’t wait for the next one!
I love history of hunting rifles and how n why tgey evolved. This type of content is so important. Your the perfect face and voice to tell these stories in my opinion. Your really easy to listen to your voice is not annoying !
That guy had bigger balls than any man that's ever lived. I have to agree.
I enjoy your channel along with your knowledge. To be honest this is your best video. Your insite to all aspects of hunting conservation and just being you and sharing your knowledge really shine through.
Thank you for this wonderful video. It was like visiting with old friends. Well done.
Toilet paper, sanitizer! Forget that stuff, give me a box of ammo, strong rifle and a forest to stalk through. Now that is pure bliss. Cheers. oh yea, forgot the scotch and cigar.
Thanks a lot for this comprehensive video. I'm always looking for good hunting literature. Your list of authors will keep me reading for years to come!
I look forward to buying some of these books. The more good knowledge a hunter can have the better we all will be.
Nice job, double D. When you get around to part 2, Wayne van Zwoll needs to be included.
Great video! I think this video really introduces me to a few hunting writers that I would enjoy reading more about and steers me away from a few I wouldn't. I also greatly appreciate you adding your insight as part of the analysis. Based on your clear research it's obvious why you know so much about this topic. Thanx!
I have to say really enjoy your channel and info shared. Send a lot to friends. The book segment outlines many of the finest on big game hunting ever written. Thanks for your excellent work.
Thanks for a detailed history lesson on the great influencers of the hunting world. You have great passion for your sport.
Thank you. Great overview and an excellent reflection.
great vid Desert Dog , awesome commentary !! keep them coming each one gets better and better!
I really loved your presentation on these legends great job.
Your videos are very enjoyable. Thank you! 👍 You keep my dreams and memories alive.
Great informative video and not boring at all , many thanks .
This really is one of the better videos I have seen for hunters and shooters. You should strongly consider writing a similarly themed book.
I would never have known of John Taylor save for you. His book is so much fun to read! Thanks!
I don't even hunt local game, let alone African safari, but since I found your channel a few days ago I watched so many of your videos, this one is my favorite! You have a great channel, I hope you'll get a lot more subscribers, keep it up
Great video. There certainly are a great many really good hunting cartridges to choose from.
Very enjoyable and educational video. Hope part 2 comes very soon. Thanks
One of the best UA-cam videos I've ever seen thank you so much..🤠👍
Glad you got bored because the outcome was a truly excellent video. I have some of the books you reviewed, but now I have to go out and find some of the other books to add to my collection. Also, I hope things work out for you when this difficult time finally ends. Best of luck!
I have many of the books myself you outlined. I have watched your book segment multiple times and sent it to friends. Outstanding review.
Fascinating video and thanks for sharing your scholarship on this subject. I learned a lot and have also enjoyed the You Tube videos by Rinella and Spomer. Over the last year Spomer seems to have really settled on the 7mmRM as his favorite/recommended all around rifle it seems. Interesting to hear all your comments about authors who went "full circle" back to the 30-06. I saved myself the round trip and have always considered my 30-06 to be that go-to rifle, but then again I've only hunted North America so far in life. Always enjoy your vids and keep up the good work.
Thanks for the hard work you put into this video. I grew up reading Jack O'Connor and eventually moved to Tucson. I've hunted the Coues whitetail ever since, but ended up with first a 257 Roberts, then a 257 Weatherby (prior to laser rangefinders), then a 6.5 Creedmoor and finally on to a Howa mini rifle with a carbon stock in 6.5 Grendel. I just bought a Model 54 Winchester in 270 with an original 3x Noske scope. I'll have to come up with something to hunt with a 270 finally!
Really enjoyed this video. Listened to it while driving home from work.
The first hunting books I ever read way back in the early seventies were written by Jack O'Connor
And I still hunt with a 270 most of the time
Fantastic video! Thanks for making this 👍👍👍
I enjoyed that , that's right in my introverted childhood's wheelhouse ! lol . My Granddad was a outdoor magazine subscriber and he kept his and stored them in boxes in the basement to be discovered and poured over by the early Teenaged me ! I read all the O'Connor , Grits Gresham , Bob Milek , Don Zutz , Jim Carmichael ( who actually lives in a nearby town and I've met in the local gun shop ) , David Petzel , and many others that I've forgotten !
Yes , I for one , think this was a great idea , maybe a part 2 in the future ???
Love Steve as a new hunter I appreciate his style.
One of the best informative hunting videos I have ever seen keep up the good work
Your videos are very informative and interesting!
Newly subscribed... Thanks for all the information and your dedication... I have lots to watch and learn. Learning is a good time too!
Great video, hope to see a part two
Boy those books bring back a lot of memories! I have a few of them and guess I'll have to dig them out and do some reading again. Thanks great video.👍 By the way not boring at all.
Really enjoy your info thank you for sharing it with us!
Love your videos Desert Dog! I used to get fascinated reading Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson books while I was still a teenager back home in Nepal. They made a mini-movie on the Man eating Leopard of Rudraprayad which is on youtube now but it doesn't do the book any justice.
I was happy to see two khukuris on your other video. I live in PNW now and I want to get into ethical hunting. I am sold on your advice on choosing 30-06 for games in my area. Keep on making these amazing vids!
Wilfred Thesiger was another good read.
Many thanks for helping me find some good books to read!
Throughly enjoyed this video. Great Job!
Great video, thanks. Great channel by the way!
Excellent video! Thanks!
Great video! Thank you sir and God bless you and yours.
This is a conversation that should be held around a campfire. And would need to start early in the morning and would last days. I’ve started such conversation around the fire in Africa with multiple PH’s. Around that fire. About Big bores to small game stuff. It’s hard to argue with the Pros.
Hi i found this video very informative and watched with pleasure. Keep them coming . Best wishes from Poland
Dziękuję
Great video, and hopefully you will do another about the guys that you didnt have time to put in this video!!
Beet wishes to you and your family in these current trying times
Steve.uk
Great info and review! Thanks, its appreciated
Thanks for the video. I've watched and enjoyed 8 or so of your vids so far and decided to sub to your channel.
Wealth of information, excellent video..
MERRY CHRISYMAS 2023!!!!!
I just happened upon your video this morning and was completely captivated by it. I own and have read more than a few of the books that you reference and agree heartily with the statements made about medium rifle calibers for most game, dangerous African species being the exception. As a disabled hunter, I have used the .270, .30-06, .308, and the 7mm Mauser. Your favorite hunting authors are mine as well and I say this: If indeed you completed the video project to combat boredom, I'd LOVE to see you at work with something that you are passionate about (lol). You really ought to write a book incorporating an encyclopedic approach to chronicling the lives (and rifle calibers)of the hunting authors you discuss; I'd buy it in a heartbeat!!!! One suggestion: Sasha Siemel's book Tigrero should be included. Many thanks for one of the most entertaining and informative videos I've watched this year!!!!!
So entertaining. Thank you sir
Excellent content and opinion, thank you for the video - great collection -
Wealth of knowledge.. excellent video
.30/06 .375H&H .458Lot .416Rigby etc.. but these writers/hunters say little about the 9.3X62 and .35 Whelen
I subscribed because of this video. Thank you for putting this together.
Great compilation and insight. You reminded me of things I should go back a reread. The only author you left out and didn’t mention that I would have added is Ross Seyfried.
Great video with some fine recommendations. My all time favorite author was Jim Corbett. But Capstick is right up there as well, in my opinion. I grew up on Jack O'Connor's writings and his "Book of Rifles" is still in my library. Thanks again!
Great stuff thank you very much totally enjoyed it
A great video, thank you!
I enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Man so many good books
This is an important video for hunters. You have laid out your content in a logical and understandable manner. I recommend getting a lapel mike. They are not expensive and they greatly improve the quality. Please forgive me if you have already made the switch.
Great review. My favorite hunting authors are J A Hunter and Jim Corbett. Both true gentleman. For all fans of African dangerous game hunting history I highly recommend White Hunters: The golden age of African safaris, especially the audiobook version. It’s the definitive work on the topic and a great reed.
Had to watch this again...its a great video
As a young man in the 70s I read Bob Ruark's use enough gun captivating. To all my brother hunters across the globe stay safe and well maintain your weapons when this awful business is over we will be out collecting fresh healthy meat again
Great Video….Thanks for sharing!
Great video!👍🏻
I hear you brother, great video.
Gary Sitton was a gifted writer. I hope a collection of his writings get published some day. He seems overlooked
I agree, but it will probably never happen.
