  • The complete Organ Trio Sonatas BWV 525-530 by JS Bach played by Richard McVeigh.
This was a project that I set myself in 2021 - to learn all 6 Trio Sonatas in 12 months. The 1st Trio Sonata went online on 23rd January 2021 and the 6th Trio Sonata was broadcast on 22nd January 2022.
Mission Accomplished (even if it was on the final day!!).
This is the realisation of a life-long dream for me, and I genuinely thought that I'd never be able to learn them all.
I really hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed learning and performing them.
The Thumbail for this album is by Gerda van loo-Vogelzang.

These are possibly some of the greatest pieces of music ever written...extraordinary in their construction and musicality.

And Bach did it almost routinely.

Couldn't agree more. And he simply named them "six sonatas for 2 keyboards and pedal"

What an achievement, not only did you learn all of these in 1 year, but you perfected them, gave them your interpretation, recorded them, then edited and produced said recording. For so many reaons this has to be a first of its kind - THANK YOU for pushing the bar ever higher. This is an amazing collection. I love them all!!!

These performances are remarkable. Tempi, articulation, registration...are all models of musical excellence. Here in the States, too often these works are played too fast, on thin registrations, and with too much detachment. Thank you for a great listening experience.

Richard how do you know which pedal to press without looking down....There is no end to your talent.....Shows how hard it is to do....Yet you glide around the keyboard and pedals like a summer breeze....Gosh I shall now watch you play....👏

Lord Richard, Imho you give Helmut Walcha a run for the money with these your liquid interpretations of these jewels of the organ literature. B-R-A-V-O!!! These are keepers!

This recording of the six trio sonatas of Bach is very valuable to me! So rich and complex, too difficult to master so listening is what's left for me. And I love it !!!

A truly great achievement for you. They are of course wonderful music but they also really strengthened ones technique considerably. Learning them over one year is quite remarkable. Great job!!

Malcolm - it’s really odd you used that expression, as I used the exact same one just the other day to someone about them! Still much work to do with articulation, and some fingering I still haven’t quite mastered!

@@beautyinsound Well, great minds think alike! A lot of us musicians have never had 9-5 jobs and I can't imagine living that life and giving up . . sleeping in, hiking, skiing, vacationing, vacationing and vacationing. The second phrase I use a lot is "I'd rather be poor and free than be a rich slave." Some day I'm going to drop everything and hike the Appalachian Trail. Even music can be a golden idol.

Even here (leprosy hospital Nepal) I can shut my eyes and listen... and feel this is a combined Bach-Richard heavenly music and joy.. ..."till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder love and praise"! Beautiful registration. At 1:08:29 with headphones you can hear the sound switching between the left & right ears. Presumably this is because one of the loudest stops was used for the facade pipes. Since it's nice to look at symmetrical structures, pipes with similar lengths often appear at opposite sides of the organ. This means that a chromatic scale will often alternate between the left & right ear, and a piece like this will appear more random. For recording, it's often difficult to position the mics for the best acoustics.

    > This is the realisation of a life-long dream for me, and I genuinely thought I'd never be able to learn than all.
Many many many congratulations Richard. A very worthy journey indeed, methinks.
Learning these pieces has been a life-long dream for me too, hampered by living somewhere for decades where there are no pipe organs with sufficiently good balance, clarity and promptness of speech.
I've only very recently discovered Hauptwerk (probably mostly due to your BiS project), and can see how it's very much helped solve this problem. Coupled with the fact that many organists now have a HW organ in their homes where they can practice easily and often, I see that it's enabling difficult music like the Bach Trio Sonatas to be learned and performed in a way that was not possible before, which is most definitely a good thing!!
    Congratulations again! 🙂

I certainly wouldn’t have been able to have learned these wonderful pieces if it weren’t for Hauptwerk. Having a house organ like this (by my old and new one) is revolutionary!

Thanks Michael. It was a conscious effort on my part to ‘control’ the tempo as I too think they are often played needlessly quickly. I can’t wait to spend many more years getting to know them - the work has only just begun!
