So the characters all looking so lonely and melancholic was because the actors were actually tired of the filming
😅 well said. I could feel that exactly. The gloomy and longing feeling we got.
if it was that easy we could all be movie stars.. 😛
I'm a simple man, I see In the Mood for Love. I click.
I too do the same well any Wong movie actually.
I don’t think I’ve ever found another actress as absolutely magnetic, gorgeous, statuesque and beautiful as Maggie Cheung in this movie. And Tony Leung…brilliant.
I absolutely adore Wong’s films especially In the mood for love but as a film student, there’s nothing more frustrating than to work with a loosely-planned production because that means twice or even thrice amounts of work you have to do. But like Maggie said, to love him as a filmmaker you have to accept and believe in his creative way of making. As exhausting as it sounds but in the end his works are splendid and guaranteed by many awards. And he must be nice as a person as well or else big stars of Asia wouldn’t stick around through many many films.
One of the reasons why Tony Leung is THE actor is that he is the only actor who sticks around for so many Wong's productions over three decades, and he is the only one who actually appreciates Wong's working process later in the years. Notice when he advised Maggie that a story or plot is not important, what's important is your character, which is such a wise take on acting/film making, because characters need to be lived in to become real persons, only then will they interact naturally with each other and the environment/happenings. He said in some of his interviews that he likes to feel his ways on set, does not need lines or watch playbacks, because he is unconscious of himself acting. I think that's why he shines most brightly in Wong's films because their creative processes are very similar.
this is so funny, wong kar wai works like me in projects
you are talented like him?
@@kael7953 Don't be a smartarse
except he gets the trust from the crew and also the rewards
@@kael7953 amenn
How is Kar Wai’s work similar to your “project”? Are you being sarcastic?
I’m shocked this doesn’t have more views, this is such a thorough, well-made video! I hope you make more!!
Thank you! Had a lot of fun researching and learning more about Wong's chaotic filmmaking ways!
Filmed in Ether You’re welcome! And I bet it was fun to research, I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about its crazy behind-the-scenes story before!
The Discovery Director...amazing!
That ending comment from Ang Lee, too hilarious! Perfect commentary to end this very thorough video essay. Thank you for sharing this to us!
If you read Doyle's entire diary from Happy Together it's beyond anything I could have imagined. At the beginning (probably more around the time Wong realized he wanted to ditch the original idea of Leung going to Argentina and meeting his deceased father's gay lover, a very Puig set up) he has Doyle write a breakdown for the story of the film. When Doyle said they need a new word besides auteur for their approach to making films he wasn't kidding. Some scenes were Doyle and William Chang scripting and directing while WKW was off trying to make sense of what was already shot and build a cohesive narrative. It's stunning how much WKW trusted those two. The way he would push Doyle for ideas and visual concepts was way beyond the usual "is that the best you can do" we usually here of from their collaboration. I've never heard of a creative team on a film working quite this way
This movie has a unique pace, and now understand why.
Thank you for this excellent essay.
I was gooped to actually see some “new” footage from the shoot in this, I’d never seen those during my google/youtube searches! Thank you very much
No problem! Hope you enjoyed watching this. :)
@@filmedinether8659 They smartly listed the sources used on their website which is really great (I posted many WKW videos too) :)

thank you wong kar wai, maggie cheung, and tony leung for giving us one of the most beautiful movies i've ever seen.
This channel is wholly underrated. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
What a beautifully researched, edited and articulate video! I'm a fan. So happy to get more insight into WKW's directing.
Wonderful classic.
Wow I didn't know any of these, especially Maggie Cheung's accent💖
Maggie Cheung has an old Hollywood beauty
This was an incredible behind-the-scenes look at the film. I instantly subscribed.
The great analysis i seen of this movie (and the work of WKW) in UA-cam, i fell in love with how much many info i didn't know
Glad you learned a lot from the video! Thanks for watching. :)
Why’d you stop making these? These were gold! Keep up the good work
The title is "In the mood for Wong Kar-wai".thanks FIE.❤
I'm surprised you didn't mention Chungking Express. That's how I was introduced to Wong Kar-Wai. I already knew Faye Wong, which was why I saw the movie in the first place.
I respect Wong's creative vision, but making a movie is a task that involves a team. If the majority of that team is telling you that the conditions you're subjecting them to are resulting in exhaustion, poor quality work, and severe dissatisfaction, it's your responsibility to either step up and be more consistent or make some compromises. We can't excuse everything in the name of "greatness" or "genius"
Agreed, I love Wong’s movies but filmmaking is a collaborative process. Can’t forgive Kubrick for what he subjected Shelley Duvall to on set. This method of Auteur filmmaking shouldn’t be glorified
@@melikaibun oh come on, not the Duvall stuff again. Duvall herself said that it was necessary to get results. Besides, actual proof of him abusing her is few and far between. Much of the clips people claim are abusive is just him being a dick, not an actual abuser.
But hey, that’s completely just me. I think Kubrick was a dickhead but not much else. One thing though- I don’t think that anyone can forgive anyone they haven’t ever known.
Yesterday I saw it for the second time but in a television screen HD, and it was amazing. Really awesome film.
Happy to see that my uploads were useful :)
For further readings, and I noticed it's not listed in the source materials, I strongly recommend Tony Rayns writings who was closely involved in the HK film industry and worked on 2046.
He wrote a book (with the original name of In The Mood For Love) and there's many interesting notes in his articles published in Sight&Sound (In the Mood for Edinburgh and The Long Goodbye, although more focused on 2046...but hey it's 2 faces of the same coin ;) )
Thank you so much for your uploads! They really helped to give this video some shape. Tony Rayns book did actually factor into our research but with COVID-19, getting a copy was difficult so we worked with what we already had (even digital copies of the book were region locked!).
@@filmedinether8659 You're welcome. For further (and fun) readings I absolutely recommend the book Wong Kar Wai Interviews by Micky Lee, full of info !
I make fan edits ! Being an amateur editor , i can say this is a perfectly edited and well researched video !
Well, at the end what it counts it’s the result. One of the best film ever! Thanks Wong
one of the best films ever made
Wow it’s almost like he is playing dolls with real life actors lol making it up as he goes so fascinating
Incredible as always
This is one of the best review/story about the film.
Great doc!! It should have so much more views. I have seen countless videos on In the mood for Love in UA-cam, but yours was such a breath of fresh air!! Thanks 😊
This is awesome! So many unseen details. Keep up on the good work ❤
I just discovered your channel with this video and I'm so glad, thanks a lot!

I’m not gay,but I love happy together more that in mood for love ….
Thought I was the only one...😂
best film ever made in 2001.
Thankyou 🙌💐
Wow, a great video explaining the backgrounds of one of my FAVORITE, if not THE favorite cinema experience! Kudos - gonna share it with others! Kudos to the two leads for not quitting despite the madness WKW put them through, and, er, to WKW himself for believing in his methods, however as painful it is for all involved! ;P
Tomy would have never left because he knew Wong very well. The chance was with mAggie but actually she was the one asking him to make a movie together during a film festival. I would have never left even in 5 years. Knowing the character of WKW, you know that the result would be just a gem as it really is.
Sorry Tony cause i love him so can’t write his name wrong 😅
A very well made video.
Great video!!! Thanx!!
Nice video man
I wish I could wear those sunglasses at night.
Well Wong might have ADHD and never got diagnosed.
He just like me
(Except I don’t have his talent)
Wong Kar Wai doesn't follow rules...period. People either accept it, or walk away 🍼
thank you for this beautiful video essay on In the Mood for Love. this could be a nice segue into a video essay on Lust Caution by Ang Lee
hay qua ong oi
So basically, one of the greatest movies I have ever seen was just a happy accident....
Reminds me so much of how Kanye West makes music. Mad genius indeed.
No sé que dice, pero confirmo.
