This well-known ballad by the Beatles is on p. 17 of Alfred's Adult Greatest Hits Level 2. It was composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney in 1965. In 1997 this song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2000, MTV and Rolling Stone voted this song as the Number One Pop Song of All Time. There are over 2,000 cover versions of it and it is one of the most covered songs in recorded music.
I prefer the tempo more "Andante" than "Moderato". (Andante is slower than Moderato.) --Norma
This piano arrangement is by Tom Gerou.

Hi Norma, I just wanted to thank you for posting these videos. I’m an adult who just began taking piano lessons and I use your videos to help me when I practice. I’m currently about 3/4 of the way through Alfred’s Adult Beginner level 1. There are so many days I feel discouraged or frustrated cause I can’t get something down as quickly as I’d like, but your videos have helped me push through! Thank you so much! :) -Crystel from Seattle (PS - I never realized how beautiful this song is on the piano!)

Crystel, you are so very welcome!! I'm so glad that you are finding the videos helpful with your piano journey through the Alfred's series. I know that other adult students feel exactly as you do with the "discouraged or frustrated cause I can't get something down as quickly as I'd like". As adults, we come to the piano with such high expectations and are often very accomplished in other areas of our lives and do so many things with ease that it seems surprising that our fingers won't just do what our brains are telling them to do. So just know that you are in exceedingly good company with other adult beginners at the piano and that it requires a lot of patience with ourselves to persevere and achieve our musical goals. Just keep at it! And yes, I think this is a particularly lovely arrangement of this song too! Aloha from Hawaii, Norma.

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! What you said is so spot on and learning the piano has taught me so much patience and perseverance. The days that are challenging, I end up practicing a piece I enjoy playing that’s not even part of my piano lessons (current favorite is Silent Night in the corresponding Christmas book for Alfred’s level 1), and I gain much more confidence after! Is it normal for that to happen? I guess so! :) Thank you again!

@@crystel.t4425 Yes, sometimes after struggling through our new pieces, we feel like we really don't know what we are doing and can hardly play the piano. Then we review a favorite or open an easier book and find much to our delight and surprise that yes, we actually can play the piano after all. :) --Norma

Hi Norma! I love all your piano videos. I am right about at this level, working on Beauty and the Beast and also I am working in the method book. I will be learning this song soon. Can you talk a bit about singing? I am, almost at the point where I don't need to concentrate so much on the piano and can maybe try singing. So when a song is a "solo" does that iumply it is not really meant to be sung with? I mean because I am actually playing the melody on the piano, does it sound maybe redundant to sing to it? If I wanted to sing along to Yesterday would I find a different version that doesn't have the melody and sinmg to that, and then maybe play the melody during the solo non-singing part?

Thank you so much, Joey! Yes, great questions regarding singing and accompanying. If the song is labeled "solo" then the melody will be included in the piano part. And sometimes it will be a sing-able arrangement and sometimes it will be a bit too "fancy" to comfortably sing along with. If the song or book is labeled "piano, vocal, guitar", then the melody might or might not be in the piano part. Those tend to vary quite a bit.
Part of the answer to your question depends on how strong your vocal skills are and if you are good at finding your pitch even if the piano accompaniment part isn't specifically playing every note that you would be singing. Some people are quite comfortable with just a simple chord foundation in the piano part and can sing on pitch, but some of us, myself included, need a melody note to follow along with.
Another question to ask is whether the song is in a "key" that is in your comfortable singing range or if it needs to be transposed to a different key signature to better match your voice. Some songs on MusicNotes.com or SheetMusicPlus.com are available in several different keys.
I think it is GREAT that you are going to make the effort to sing along with your piano playing. It is actually a different skill set to accompany yourself singing and/or to accompany other people singing. Excellent work to expand your skills, I always encourage my students to sing along if they are able to do so and comfortable with that, and encourage them to play while other people are singing as well. We often start with "Happy Birthday" since that is so familiar and they have opportunity to use it often during the year.
Hopefully that answers your questions a bit, but feel free to ask further if something needs more clarification. --Norma
