I think it’s interesting how they took the “blood” from the Targ words “Fire and Blood” and made the detailing look like Blood Cells in Rhaenyra’s costume, and the fabric they used for Alicent’s looks like roof shingles/tiles to represent Hightower.

The male characters are the uncontested best-dressed of this show. I loved the wedding outfits - it presents the two people as equal, in identical clothing. This hints at what the Valyrian society might have been - especially because there were female dragon-riders and women could perform the marriage ceremony.
I agree that the Lannisters usurped the exotic, kimono-inspired dresses and armour as a visible show of their power after the Targaryen dynasty ended. The Targaryens were the real power for centuries: when Robert became King, the Lannisters became the true power. Cersei likely dressed the same way she saw Queen Rhaella dress at court.

Yes! We saw Cercei as a young girl, when Aegon and his court should have been alive, and she wore the same style dress

what impresses me the most with this show is they kept the "dark" filming choice of GoT, but the shinier fabric seems to capture whatever light there is in each scene. I think it works with the psychology of each character, they know their lives are harsh and dark, yet there is a brightness to be found. The little glints of metallic thread and fabric play well if this is in fact what they're trying to do. Overall, I'm extremely comfortable and impressed with this series. GoT season 2 and 3 sometimes meandered, storywise, but this show is briskly moving forward, and the color story and fitting marks each character. I'm happy, overall.

I actually think the Valyrian wedding costumes look somewhat similar to Korean hanboks, especially with the volume on the bottom skirts. Excellent analysis as always, I always look to you for information about where they source their fabrics haha!

They remind me of Russian garb, particularly the kokoshnik headpiece

Deamon & Rheanera's wedding outfits were so beautiful. Her headress reminded me of something Sun Ra would've worn.

I liked that the characters wore somewhat "muted" and darker colors for the funerals. Those House colors are very important to Westeros.

Thank you for dissecting the costumes in the show. In my opinion, it's very hard to bring a medieval fantasy universe like this to life if the costumes are too futuristic for the time period it's supposed to evoke. I love the costume design in the show and I'm glad that your video is more attention to this. It's so important but it's often not the focus of the praise that the show is getting. I mean everything is praise worthy and the costumes design exquisite!

Helaena’s dress looks like a medieval inspired take on Rapunzel’s dress from Tangled.

Yes, a few of the dresses look like Disney inspired. Someone on Twitter mentioned that Alicent's pink dress with the cape trimmed with fur looks like Belle's costume from Beauty and the Beast.

In fact, traditionally han Chinese wear right over left, and deads are the opposite. So maybe they take inspiration from this? Or they just didn't care.

    • @kelsin8854

Chinese hanfu is also folded left over right, with right over left for the dead. The Japanese kimono was inspired by the hanfu so they followed the same principle. I could be wrong though.

Hello thank you for commenting. The designer specifically said kimono-like.

I feel really terrible in admitting I wasn't paying as much attention to colors just because, as you said, it was so gosh don darn dark. I never would have remembered the parallels you just pointed out to Cersei's kids being dressed the same. I am also ashamed that I, with my background, didn't even connect the complimentary color effect. Did I giggle at the comic tie in? yes. Yes I did. I love the eel/ snake in the grass comparison. And I'm starting to be convinced that the not-great fits are their attempt to 'show' that Alicent kept more of a figure after her pregnancies.
The wedding costumes really threw me for a loop because they were so unique. I wasn't sure if I really liked or really disliked them but I appreciated how distinctive they felt. I got the point of using such an 'aged' look immediately, so not a bad use narrative. Oooh nice point about 'wearing them like the dead'

My theory is that if the Targaryan wedding costumes are inspired by kimonos, I was thinking that the Valyrians got it from Empire of the Dawn, which is far east, representing tour far east and tthe somtumes of Korea, China and Japan, as Martin clearly was inspired by our own world map and cultures. Some speculate that it is the EOTD that tought Valyrians to tame dragons. and it would in that case be natural for the Valyrians to adapt other culural influences from EOTD. Just a random thought some time after this episode aired XD.

Please do the costumes for the new AMC series "Interview with the Vampire". They did some interesting things in that show, especially in how elements of Lestat's and Louis' costumes reflect, complement, and contrast with one another harking back to their shared and opposite natures. The time period from 1910 to 1916 is also beautifully evoked in the costumes of the supporting cast.

Also any advise on trying to find images of those Targaryen tapestries? I hope they add some structural undergarments next season because how winkled and weirdly fitted some of the costumes are are distracting

@@Costume_CO The dragon orgy Targaryen tapestries you see in the background of the first few episodes in the red keep. You are able to find great images of the costumes on mannequins on HOTD so I figured I would ask advise on seeing if the art team has any images of the tapestries

I think the costumes in the series have pretty much been on point but I really hated the wedding costumes Daemon and Rhaenyra wore, especially that headpiece of Rhaenyra’s. It looked like she slapped a turtle shell on her head. I think something larger and grander - and in a different color - like the Russian headpieces from which it was inspired would have been better.
