- [Mono] Ms. Straw is accompanied by Dave Alvin, and the in-house band for this live performance on USTV, which includes Tom Barney on bass; Don Alias on percussion; and Philippe Saisse on keyboards. Hal Willner was the creative genius behind this special program.
The introduction to the clip has a few glitches, but settles down by the start of the performance.
Syd Straw is CRIMINALLY underappreciated. And Surprise is a classic from beginning to end. It was when it was released, and continues to be today.
Holy shit. What a performance....and Dave Alvin on guitar. Fierce indeed.
I always had a thing for geeky girls... Love you Mrs. Fingerwood!!!
'Surprise'- greatest pop album of 1989. easily.
Syd Straw in her prime. A giant talent of American music.
John Beck ...the is nice...wow,...Surprise record is loaded...a real gem
That's a solid band she had.
NO kidding! That's young Dave Alvin in there!
david sanborn midnight music show... I made sure not to miss an episode
Excellent song! Thanks for sharing! I used to wear my VHS cassette out watching this performance over and over again.
I discovered Syd straw because of the golden palominos and I know about the golden palominos because of Drivin'n'Cryin. I will be checking out more of Syd straw and golden palominos
Ha-ha. The Syd bone connected to the Palominos bone. That's music discovery.
@@e-care-books9867 golden palominos link to Drivin'n'Cryin started when the late great drummer Anton Fier, helped out DNC new Drummer Jeff Sullivan on sophomore album called The Whisper tames the lion. Drivin'n'Cryin' got drummer Jeff Sullivan from a band called Mr Crows Garden that later would become the Black Crowes. Drivin'n'Cryin and The Black Crowes were on tour together this past summer and I got to see them in Jacksonville Florida. Roots Run Deep and the branches are many on the tree of music!
Sounds so Innovative and Fresh.... Her upper range is so Strong.. I think I did have the Cassette with John Lydon on The Animal Awakes.
She certainly deserves a LOT more attention. This is superior to a lot of the Dreck we've be listening to Lately with the computer 'Fakey'
enhanced little girls singing into their Hairbrushes. Makes you Wish For the Days when everyone was more unsure of the Direction.
A Syd Straw classic. What a beautiful song.
Dave Alvin on guitar
This is a great find, I never heard this song before.
Scott Taylor You should track down the whole lp/cd then. It's great, through and through, and features a stellar cast of musicians to boot :)
