- On 28 November 2001, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh visited ITN during a day dedicated to the broadcasting industry. As part of a guided tour led by newsreaders Trevor McDonald, Mary Nightingale, and Katie Derham, the Queen and the Duke were shown the ITV News studios, newsrooms, galleries, and other behind-the-scenes nerve centres of ITN's sprawling news-gathering operation.

The ITV News presenters back in the 1990's were in a different world back then. The way they researched and presented the stories on air was second to none. The current era has not and never will match the standards that were set in the 1990's and early 2000's.
The footage just looks so clean and crisp as well.
Also, bear in mind, there was no competition from social media
That visit wasn't the 90s, though. The news being covered during the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's visit was the war in Afghanistan/search for Osama bin Laden (post-September 11, 2001).

She actually said to Trevor McDonald "it's so exciting". The reaction many of us would have if visiting ITN. Such a sincere and genuine woman, really interested in the places we went around Britain, the people she met and what they did and why it was important. She knew how to dress for every occasion and she knew how to make everyone she spoke to feel important and valued. God rest Her Majesty the Queen.
I would have thought more interesting than exciting , to visit some news studio ? Hence , one can only assume that the late Queen was seeking to show polite enthusiasm and not a lack of intelligent conversation ?

I have no doubt HMTQ chose well ahead of this engagement that she would appear in head-to-toe green screen green. I'm sure all wrote it off as a funny coincidence, entirely unaware that when it comes to on-point and painstaking (practically forensic) wardrobe choices, no one can match the Queen's mastery in the art of the subtle nod of the unexpected & haute coture perfection.
Worked at ITN for 38 years, best job I ever had! ❤

Great piece of footage. The calibre of newsreaders ITN still had back then was exceptional. The only one left now is Mary Nightingale.

0:48 - The Queen enters Studio 4 at ITN - This was the studio used for ITN News bulletins from 1995 to 1999 and was based in the heart of the ITN newsroom. In 2004 it was revamped to become the home of London Today/Tonight. In 2012 it was decommissioned and converted back into office/newsroom space.

3:52 - This is the basement of ITN, and houses two studios, Studio 1 and 2. Both are still in use today as of 2024. In 2001 their green screen studio was based in Studio 2, with the main ITV News set in Studio 1. This would be reversed in the 2004 relaunch of ITV News and today the main ITV News and ITV London News sets are in Studio 1. Studio 2 is used by Channel 5 for their news and the Jeremy Vine morning show.
