  • A Perspective Shift: Why Thailand Trumps the U.S. for a Best Life

Over the past four years, I've made my home in Thailand, trading the hustle and bustle of the U.S. for the serenity of Thai streets. Recently, I returned to my homeland for the first time since my departure, and what I witnessed startled me. Things had changed, and, frankly, not for the better.
One of the most striking differences was the sense of safety, or rather the lack of it, in urban American centers. As a homecoming welcome, a local advised me to be fast on my feet. His words echoed in my mind as I walked through the city, yearning for the safety and peacefulness that Thailand offers.
This brought me to a realization, a validation of my decision to call Thailand home. It highlighted ten aspects that I truly missed about my adopted country, things that make it special and superior, in my eyes, to the U.S.
    1. Peacefulness and Politeness 01:06
Thailand's tranquility is something I miss deeply. Amid the chaos of any downtown American city, I reminisced about the calm, polite, and faith-driven culture in Bangkok. The sense of safety, the harmonious environment, the absence of overt moralism and polarization is a breath of fresh air. I longed for the sight of people praying openly, a common scene in Thailand's cities, radiating an aura of peace and tranquility.
    2. Hustle and Resilience 01:59
The grit, hustle, and resilience of the Thai people are inspiring. Their unyielding spirit shines through every street vendor in Bangkok, each selling their wares with a determination and endurance that is humbling to witness. Their no-excuses attitude in the face of hardships is a sight I miss, and one that is sorely lacking in the U.S.
    3. Lower Poverty Rates: Thailand is more uplifting 03:00
Another stark contrast is the poverty and homelessness that pervades the American urban scene. While Thailand isn't devoid of poverty, it isn't as despair-inducing as in the U.S. The cities in Thailand are comparatively clean, and you don't see as much obesity or other health issues. This resilience in the face of adversity, again, testifies to the strong character of the Thai people.
    4. Minimalism and 'Unfashion Fashion' 03:42
Thailand's 'unfashion fashion' and their lack of obsession with brands and consumerism are aspects I adore. The laid-back, carefree style coupled with a healthier lifestyle is a refreshing contrast to the conspicuous consumer culture and obesity prevalent in the U.S.
    5. A Superior Coffee House Experience 06:16
The coffee house experience, particularly at Starbucks in Thailand, is in a league of its own. These spaces in Thailand are work-friendly, serving as excellent spots to plug in your laptop and get some work done, with the added bonus of offering cocktails alongside coffee. This contrasts sharply with the grab-and-go Starbucks experience in U.S. city centers, which feels stressful and uninviting.
    6. Affordable Bodywork 09:34
One cannot talk about Thailand without mentioning Thai massage, arguably the best in the world. An essential part of my active lifestyle, I frequent these places at least three times a week. This kind of bodywork at an affordable rate is something I dearly miss.
    7. Delicious and Affordable Food 10:01
The mouth-watering Pad Thai, along with all other Thai delicacies, is another thing I miss. At two dollars for a meal, it is an affordable luxury. The lower cost of living, coupled with a higher quality of life, is an unbeatable combo that Thailand offers.
    8. Fresh and Affordable Tropical Fruits 10:39
The tropical fruits in Thailand are fresh, delicious, and, most importantly, affordable. You can enjoy a wide variety of fruits, like mangos, papayas, and pineapples, at a fraction of the cost you would incur in the U.S.
    9. A Broadened Worldview 12:23
The way of life in Thailand is different, often in positive ways, from what we are accustomed to in the U.S. It's simple yet sustainable. The traditional Thai homes, for instance, are more environmentally friendly than the supposedly 'low-energy' homes in the U.S. This shift in perspective has been enlightening.
    10. The Thai Smile 16:12
The Thai people are known for their warm smiles, a characteristic so deeply ingrained in the culture that Thailand is often referred to as the 'Land of Smiles'. This genuine kindness and welcoming nature contribute to the overall sense of safety, peace, and happiness in the country.
Living in Thailand has opened my eyes to a different way of life, a way that values community, simplicity, and wellbeing above consumerism. While there's still a lot to appreciate about the U.S., my time in Thailand has taught me that there's more than one way to lead a fulfilling life. It's time we rethink our priorities and maybe, just maybe, incorporate a bit more of the Thai way of living.

In 1552 Francis Xavier, writing from Sancian to his friend Diego Pereira, expressed his desire to go to Siam, but his death on 2 December 1552, prevented him. In 1553 several Portuguese ships landed in Siam, and at the request of the king three hundred Portuguese soldiers entered his service. The following year two Dominicans, Fathers Hieronymus of the Cross and Sebastian de Cantù, joined them as chaplains. In a short time, they established three parishes at Ayutthaya with about fifteen hundred converted Siamese. Both missionaries, however, were murdered by locals in 1569, and were replaced by Fathers Lopez Cardoso, John Madeira, Alphonsus Ximenes, Louis Fonseca (martyred in 1600), and John Maldonatus (d. 1598). In 1606 the Jesuit Balthasar de Sequeira, at the request of the Portuguese merchant Tristan Golayo, and in 1624 Father Julius Cesar Margico, came to Ayutthaya and gained the favour of the king. A subsequent persecution, however, stopped the propagation of the Christian faith and no missionaries were allowed until Siam was made a Vicariate Apostolic by Pope Alexander VII on 22 August 1662..........................

@tiaimo thank you for your comment. My Thai friends express their frustration with the government and inequality, no country is perfect. But, with the way things are going in the US - the peacefulness, kindness, warm-heartedness, and safety of Thailand becomes more valuable than possessions found in Western countries. If basic needs are met, a simple, joyful life in Thailand is a rich life. And better than volatile life in the U.S. right now.

Tbh I used to looked down upon my hometown when I was studying in California. Maybe because I was lucky to be in a small town called Davis and everything was relatively nice. I mean the government is literally enabling drug usage. Too many people are in denial of how much of a dystopian this country is.

In fact, millions of Thai are staving in poverty. Approximately 89% of the population have debt, and less than 5% have 1 m. Baht in saving.
Thai always smiles in all circumstances. Buddhism is a foundation of peace and compassion. They are helping and giving, although nothing much to give. The Westerners are the opposite, it is individual and self-centered.
Many foreigners are here for personal gain because it is easier than homes. Some become victims of each other. Marry for convenience, But some good expats dwell here because of the comfort and peaceful Thai style. Some become good monks and abandon all materials.
Many good things offer in the US, but people take them for granted, and the war business is destroying everything. The elites always have a good life at the taxpayer's expense. Thailand is the same, good and bad are everywhere. There are no last satisfactions. Best.

I'm Thai. I disagree with your opinion. It's not uncommon for Thais to go into debt for buying houses, cars, and luxuries. But they did not starve. Everyone had plenty of food to eat. Fishermen have seafood to eat. Farmers grow vegetables and fruits to eat and sell. Thai people are kind-hearted and don't like to take advantage of others. Respect all people of all nationalities equally. In fact, the rich in Thailand are more selfish than the average citizen. Thailand has a low cost of living. Therefore, savings of 1 million baht are already very valuable for Thai people. Some people are in debt but they have more assets than debts. Everyone who is a government official has debt. Some people go into debt because they want to invest money in their business, including me.

@@PhilipJames360The West is falling and Asia is rising. I welcome all good people but always more bad than good are moving to Asia. SE Asia, Thailand is a first target because of the pro-Western society, uneducated people, especially hookers and women will take advantage of foreigners. Hookers today are proud of White husbands which once was a shameful occupation, but it is a survival in the games
Thailand is not now in a position to deal with its messy culture. In fact, Thai culture was much better than today's greedy Thais. They are consuming too much Western media. Corruption is rampant among locals, especially military and police mafias. Time will tell you the truth.
Please monitor the situation and help us clean up the foreign trash. I have done that for the US, and this nation has many good Americans, and they are doing well in the US and Asia. It is the US politicians and corporations that are the world's enemies and cause the US to decline. Thailand is the same, politicians, police, military, and many bad dudes must be destroyed.

Very true. But Thailand has to be very careful. The US meddling in Thai affairs by using paid US puppets like Thanintorn etc, US paid NGOs harming the country and further the american harmful influence in the country should be stopped. Thai public is unaware of what's going on behind closed doors of geopolitics. There is no country in the world the US ever helped. The US uses positive sounding vocabulary such as democracy, freedom, prosperity to brainwash the nation while meddling in the internal affairs gaining more power and influence. Furthermore, there is plenty of examples of US robbing countries of mineral resources, various scams in Healthcare industry and so on. I could continue, but let's not talk about mayhem, death and destruction of places where the US stepped in.

The cost of living for what u get is way to high, for no good reason... There's racism and division... consumerism is off the roof...ppl just buy so much junk... Yes, everyone seems obese...ppls diets are terrible...The only silver living is spending time with my family, especially my dad...But I'm leaving in a month and a half...flying back to Asia...and the day I fly out most likely will cry happy tears...This trip was needed but also confirmed to me what I already knew...The US is just not the place for me right now...I love and am privileged to be born in America, but this is no longer hm...

I love America. It's my home. I'm a patriot. However, for the last 5 years I've lived in Vietnam working as an English Teacher. I live on the top floor of a 30 story High Rise building with a stunning view of Ha Long Bay. I've been to Thailand about 4 times and I'm getting ready to spend 30 days there in just a few more days. My family and friends miss me back in the US and often ask me when I'm coming back home. Honestly and sadly I tell them that I don't know that I will ever return. I want to, but it breaks my heart to see my home country falling apart. Greedy politicians on both sides are literally tearing America apart. No one smiles or says hello anymore. Mental illness is everywhere and honestly, everything is way too expensive there. The price is so high, that people just barely make enough money to pay the bills. Over here in Asia, everyone wants to come to America. They have no idea how things have changed. I tell them it is better to wait for better times. They look back at me confused and disappointed. They really believe that if they could just get to America they would become rich overnight. I tell them it's possible but unlikely in this day and age and they absolutely have no idea how dangerous it can be. Over here in Asia people trust each other and families are everything. I saddens me to tell them that in America, you have to know someone for about a year before they open up to you and decide to be a friend. In Asia, roles are more traditional. Most people know who they are and no one is going to push an agenda on you. Back home in the US, our people are divided and close to a cultural civil war. So yes, I totally understand what you are saying and I'm glad you posted this video. At least it gives Asian people a more realistic view into what to expect. Again it breaks my heart because it is true. I'm getting old. I'm 58 and I do want to go home again soon. America is the land that I love. Even with all it's problems , I miss freedom. Over here I'm a foreigner. I have to follow immigration laws and have visas constantly updated. So it's not as easy as some would believe. But you are right. Vietnam and Thailand are amazing places to carve out a good life. Cheers!

You can find emporiums in Bangkok with all the highest luxury brand names. Some Thais are very rich, actually a lot are very rich. Also solar energy would work wonder in Thailand. They should definitively go that way asap. Mind you, maybe they do it in remote villages already. But I can't say. I have not really been in the deep country for ages. June 2023, I went to the US for the first time in my life, visited LA, SF, and NY. I was deeply saddened to see an astronomical number of homeless people on the streets of those cities. I would not have believed this without seeing it with my own eyes. It would have been worse for these poor souls in winter when the temperature plummets. What more was that they were always hungry. Seeing many of them scavenging through rubbish bins, I wish I could feed them all. But then, I would not have had a dime left :(
Thailand is still a poor country but starvation is almost unheard of. If nothing at all, we can always go to temples where monks can share their unconsumed daily alms. Most of all, (with some temples excepted) we can rest, sleep, or shower in the temples as well. When sick, we can go to government hospitals to receive free health cares. Although not the best medical service in the world, but most treatments are accessible and common ailments are cured. Witnessing the state of physical and mental healths that have plagued the homeless communities in the US, my heart sank. How could they endure living with the sickness and pain is beyond belief.
Overall, the USA is still the great country but much more is needed to resolve the homelessness issues.

    2. Our poverty is far below the poverty line - they are just tucked away in certain parts of Bangkok and outside of the city. It is still a big issue for many parts of Thailand with no access to basic survival needs such as fresh water, food and/or electricity.
    3. Mental health is still a stigma for Thais to openly discuss. They maybe smiling on the outside but just the cover up. It is such a taboo we don’t even have proper terms to discuss our emotions nor having ever been educated on this topic. Our language is so limited to convey concepts of mental health issues.
