This $10 Billion Startup Is One Of The Hottest Design Companies | Forbes

- In April, Dylan Field had his craziest day since he skipped out on Brown University to try his hand at startups nearly a decade ago. At the virtual conference of his design software company, Figma, popular with customers including Airbnb, BMW and Zoom, he announced just its second-ever product, a tool for online whiteboarding sessions punnily called FigJam. Hours later, he found out his wife, Elena, was pregnant with their first child.
Field, 29, had spent the majority of the pandemic listening to Figma’s users. While he has traveled as far as Ukraine and Nigeria to visit clients in person, he passed the time during lockdown reading customer support tickets, scanning feedback from sales reps and responding to users on Twitter. By October, he had a plan.
Figma’s main product provides a virtual canvas where designers and others make visuals in real time. But there was no way for them to use Figma to diagram early ideas or create flowcharts. That’s where FigJam comes in, serving as a digital version of a home or office wall covered in Post-it Notes. “With a brainstorming session, you’re trying to create this really fluid space and get everyone into a headspace of ‘Are we in flow? We’re going to have fun. And we’re not trying to worry about pixels,’” Field says.
Adobe popularized software for designers back in the 1980s; by the time Figma, No. 7 on this year’s Cloud 100 list, came around, designers were also turning to Sketch out of Europe and to InVision (No. 52). Figma, launched in 2016, already has millions of users and expects annual recurring revenue to more than double this year from $75 million in 2020, according to sources. Joe Biden’s campaign managed all its visual assets via Figma. And when toilet paper ran out across the U.S. in 2020, Kimberly-Clark drafted reorder forms using Figma’s tools.

Its surreal to see finally Figma get the recognition it deserves. Been using it since its Beta version
I tried Ligma in the beta
Same here!
@@APAstronaut333 whats ligma?
@@hukumbra ligma balls
Same lol
One of the greatest tech products in the 2010 - 2020 decade. Figma is directly competing with Adobe shitty products, and amazingly, they are winning!
Adobe is really shitty,true
@@uxbykilian3148 adobe Photoshop is not great but not that bad either
@@chr2547 photoshop is still probably the best image editing software, but figma is competing more with like illustrator, and is already 50x better. if figma put their minds to creating a photo editing software though like photoshop, they would also blow adobe out of the water. they have gotten too complacent with their monopoly on the design suite industry, glad to see companies like figma either pushing adobe to do better, or pushing them out of the way completely
Figma is in direct competition with Sketch. Sketch has been the industry standard in UX/UI for a long time. I’m still a Sketch user and probably will be for a little while. Figmas advantage has always been accessibility. But their features are starting to get real compelling.
It competes with Adobe XD and Sketch. There are cheap/alternate versions of Adobe products but as a complete creative suite, there is no other alternative to the creative cloud which is kind of sad.
Figma is unbelievably helpful, easy to use, versatile and very generous, love it !!!
Did you try Ligma?
Figma is what Adobe should’ve been but never could
Adobe is still allowed to exist today because of their tightgrip monopoly on each designers design process reliance to their products, because they're still the only design tools that can do that such thing. Leading to them being this big design behemoth that has a lot of resources behind it.
I am so glad companies like Figma is here to challenge that notion or the world's designer's reliance on these legacy dinosaur companies like Adobe.
Nah, can’t create illustrations/edit images on figma. It’s great because it’s so intuitive to use when creating an app mock-up, but it’s not the same as Adobe.
@@maboo736 you can create illustrations just fine, I actually prefer working with vector graphics in Figma for performance and ease of use, it’s just that they don’t support print colours and illustrator does
Adobe has always been more interested in making money than making great tools. Even now their creative suit is basically the same as it was 10 years ago. Same broken UX, same bugs, same s**t
@@dariostefanutto5780 They just aren't a product centric company anymore, may follow the fate of IBM/ Blackberry etc within 10 years. Reminds me of this: ua-cam.com/video/K1WrHH-WtaA/v-deo.html/ They do have bubbles of good product within the company though, take XD or Character animator for example.
Figma + Canva = best things to ever happen for start-ups and small businesses.
I use this tool everyday. It's sensational! The world defo needed it
Shout out to the company, teams that solved problems for a lot of people across different industries, departments not only designers. Figma not only helped me in my daily work life but also inspired me on how to be more creative everyday. The company’s vision which made the design is not a silo’s journey is something that is undoubtedly insightful
Happy to see Figma getting this recognition. Three years ago I was introduced to Figma, a year ago I joined the community, and now Figma's my go to tool for design.
I am a self-taught designer. I started my design journey with figma back in 2018. I knew it from the start that figma would conquer design industry..i am so happy for figma.
Figma is the best thing to happen in the design industry for years. I would love them to tackle desktop publishing and perhaps offer dedicated creative modes for illustration / web / desktop publishing / animation / in the future that Tweak the workspace to fit better. I truly hate using Adobe products and think Figma should directly challenge all of their Creative Suite. All of the bones are already in place to do that. Incredible product.
Big fan of Figma - excited to see more great stuff from the team!
figma made me such a better designer because i was able to quickly pick up the technical aspect of the program and just focus on the creative brainstorming, execution + expanding so far beyond practice. love u figma
Figma is the best tool for so many things. It has utterly and completely replaced all previous tools we used to incorporate. Haven't looked back once since switching in 2018.
What were you using previously, and for what tasks?
Feeling very proud to see these young entrepreneurs!!!
Rich kids*
@@parimtm don't think he was rich in the beginning
@@dhaloh look deeper
@@averagejoegrows good for him for doing something that helps others for the money then. Most rich kids blow it on dope, cars, parties and girls. Figma has helped so many designers. I have been using it for years.
so funny how all silicon valley guys all have a similar tone. he sounds so similar to zuck and elon
a friend of mine just introduced me to figma. It's amazing. He was a UX designer but I just use it for collaborative presentations. Love it.
Figma is pretty fantastic from what I hear (used Sketch in the past). Curious is it's possible to make video/audio content on it?
I love using Figma. Please add a scroll bar to the layers panel!!!
My team uses Miro for collaboration and Figma for UI designs, but interesting that Figma has collaboration features.
As someone who's used Figma, I think that this is one of those few decacorns (10x unicorn) that actually deserves their $10B valuation. If anything, I feel they are undervalued compared to Adobe's $300 Market Cap.
Been a fan of Figma over 4 years now. Never a day of regret
Figma is out this world, they keep bringing awesome, mind blowing updates.
Big ups team Figma ❤️
Figma is LIT!
I love to design and make mobile apps as a hobby. Y’all make my life so much more ❤️
I love using Figma its so seamless and the fact that it's free is just amazing for broke students like me 😅
I love Figma and use it everyday to get better at what I do and to create experiences that work for people. One bit of wisdom, to create and not be perfect, just keep going.
Sounds very similar to the company my brother started called Ligma
Love Figma, such a nice way to start developing what you want without a massive knowledge in coding!
Using this tool almost daily too!
It's great interview 💯
Wow never thought of the guys behind the product. I love figma so much it's replaced SOOO many other different types of programmes. Sitting in your browser is the most handiest thing ever, Google docs, figma, what more do I need
Who is here after the purchase
Does it support Wacom Tablet Pen?
What do u guys think about Adobe XD? I've tried Figma a bit and been using Sketch at my student job but i find their to be too many tools and too much navigating / clicking to find the things i want to find. To me Adobe XD i have the things I want right there in 1 - 2 clicks and it just works seamlessly, no need to go around finding it or clicking bunch of stuff to get to where I want to get it's just there in the face in front of me. It's like using Apple products it's the simplicity of things and not having to have too many unnecessary tools that are not needed, that's why i switched from Photoshop to Adobe XD back in 2018 and never looked back. What do u guys think of XD? would like to hear your thoughts thanks!
We use it in our work for the app, my company runs, the question is, they redesign figma on figma?
Never used Figma, but I'm curious to try it out!
Figma accomplished for the design world what Spotify did for the music world. They listened to what designers were struggling with and innovated in a space that seemed already conquered. Think iTunes for music and Photoshop/Sketch for design. Love Figma and can't wait to see what the future holds!
I've been replacing Adobe Xd with Figma for like 4 years. Amazing tool!
Pretty cool company
Whenever i see these kind of tech startup company realize how important is it to know coding in this century.
Not important but valuable.
It's important if you want to be a developer I guess otherwise it's not that important.
@@BrieoRobino it’s more about the ability to bring your ideas to life and if it’s a good idea being credited with name value and capital
@@arcisvar4863 What you described is someone that wants to be a developer in some capacity. So my point still stands.
@@BrieoRobino lol most people will stay poor and mediocre their entire lives, if they can code, their chances of leaving that behind significantly increases, so yes it is important.
Good for them
They make it user friendly for everyone and that’s why they’re good.
"Nothing great is built alone". So true.
Good job sir
How you created Adobe xD clone or replica in just 5 months approximately
i love figma as a user
Worth every penny of that 10 billion dollar valuation.
I'm not super tech savvy. Can someone explain some practical applications of this program? Like specific examples of what you can use it for.
do interface design
I never heard of it. How s that
Is this a competitor to Canva?
Fair play I mean but the UI looks like a crossbreed between Miro and Canva. How is it worth 10B+ ?
Adobe is wack, bad UI and UX. Figma is King❤️
Figma completely changed the game. From unknown to hands-down best digital design tool BY FAR imho. Constant innovation blew away the competition. THX Figma
Fun fact: Many UA-cam features are also designed in Figma.
Figma is the best thing to happen to the tech industry in the product design space
Most important part of what he said. "perfection is the enemy". Everyone trying to launch a start up remember that.
figma is so so good it’s crazy
10 months later Adobe acquires it for $20 billion
Its an awesome software ✨
Finally figma is getting the recognition they deserve
Figma should create a premium, light(cloud based) and easy to use alternative for Photoshop and illustrator
It will be awesome but It isn't it's purpose thoo, it's great for prototyping and wireframes. But figjam too lacks a lot compared to Miro
As a web developer, I use figma every day and ever since the first day I used it, I can't believe it's free.
This guy is natural not some BS MBA student with excellent achievements and granted an six digits offer in a big corporate America.
Xd tryna catch up.. 😂😂
you know the product is actually great when the comment section is all about praises. I'm a designer and Figma really is the best thing ever happened to us, great job!
Figma is becoming industry standard, undoubtedly
Figma is like a game for ui designers.
Firma - Photoshop Witz a good User Experience
This guy designs.
I just love figma 💗
Figma! 👌
i wonder how they built their ui

As a web developer. I LOVE FIGMA ❤️
figma is roughly 5 yrs old. wow
Figma is phenomenal!
Figma is an amazing tool
I know You are looking for the comment "Why join with Team Adobe instead of playing with them?"
Love love love Figma
I love Figma!
There correct question should have been: 'Figma what's your dogma?'😎
"..nothing great is made alone "
I love figma and use it everyday
Amazing interview.
Figma or Adobe XD?
Figma truly can dominate the design software market. Better than Adobe XD
Figma is just an outstanding product!
I'm no designer, but I used Figma today
If I see a well groomed CEO I am suspicious but this guy is what you want
Figma definitely going public
Figma is a game changer
RIP Figma.
Hail figma
Figma is more than a design tool. Figma is a way of life now
Who loves Figma?❤️❤️❤️😇
Forbes getting around the advertiser label?
I love you figma.
Absurd title. Figma is a technology company selling a tool for designers. Not a design company.
I love figma

Figma was far better than Photoshop at user interface design..
Figma is bae ❤️
