  • First time turning Acacia, I guess. I was not expecting the wood to be so hard but, wow, it is! Got through it with lots of sharpening and found the grain to be beautiful and colorful. Complimented by the excellent bark, it turned out to be a beautiful piece. Not sure about the shape, though, what do you think?

Pretty slick. I think there are more types of Acacia than states in America. Most types come from far away. But nearly all varieties are hard, heavy, and have a tendency to have interesting grain patterns. Every tree is different but this wood is usually twice as hard as the woods that North America calls hard. Such a lovely thing that you have made, Phil, thanks for doing what you do.

I love the shape, somehow I feel it shows off the beautiful colour and grain beautifully. The distinctive bark too adds a great deal. As ever Phil, I am watching you at ridiculous o’clock (5.15am) here in Scotland after being blasted awake by a bad dream (I think!?). I miss the smell of a woodshed, since my husband died, and now I watch you and allow my mind to inhale what I know to be one of the nicest scents in the world. Anyway, thanks again for a wonderfully relaxing and interesting video! 👏🏻🪵

Luckily, I don't do anything during my waking hours that requires a lot of sleep to get over! LOL!

Our sweet acacia known as huisache in Texas looks very close to mesquite which is also very plentiful here. It’s much more dense and heavy and is harder but shares the same white sap wood and pink to deep red heartwood. They can be mistaken for each other when very mature. I cut and mill both.
The bowl turned out very nice. I’ll have to try to turn some one day.

I believe that is Bird's Eye, like you find in Maple. Too many holes, and they don't go deep like woodpecker holes would.
Just my guess, and I'm sticking to it. ;-))

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  2 роки тому

Thanks a lot, Gord! I agree it looks like woodpecker holes but, they are very well spaced, not hap-hazard as you might suspect a woodpecker would make. I have more of this and it's the same way but it might have come from the same part of the tree. I just think it's the way the bark is but I really don't know. 😊

Beautiful Phil. The branch inclusion is a plus. The compression grain is stunning. Personally I would have thinned the walls a bit more. Thank You Phil...(i am late 4 your show today, the job gets in the way at times)...Acacia grows all over my area and comes in many different kinds. I did not know it was such a hard wood. Excellent bark and nice crack free turning. Phil you are the crack, cavity, spalted, rotten, wormy, rocky-ist wood turner on UA-cam so I suspect it was a bit of a carefree turning this time? .. I was thinking if it would have worked to scrape in reverse on that torn part? Would it have not torn or torn more? ... As said, I am late BUT I am having fun as always watching you turn Phil and look forward to your next performance... TM

Thanks a lot, Tuffy and your tardiness is excused. 😊 I don't think turning in reverse would have helped. I spot sanded and sanded at 80 grit, forward and reverse and it just would not smooth out. I know, it's just weird! It was not a carefree turning. This wood was HARD! I edited out most of my "I'm gonna go sharpen up" but believe me, there were plenty of them. LOL!

God directed acacia for the supports and all the wooden furniture of the tabernacle of meeting (Exodus 25 - 38). This video highlights the hardness of this wood, and therefore presumably its durability, as well as its subtle beauty, suggesting why God chose it to strengthen and beautify the place where He dwelt among His people.

I agree, not sure about shape, probably a little upright for me. I’d have made a shallower curve, but all in all great job.
You don’t seem to have any really big swept back finger nail gouges. I don’t like them either, I prefer standard grind, or just a little sweep on wings so that I can get down the bottom of bowls better.

Depending on whether the inside or outside finishes out better is the side I display. But, I'm someone who likes wormholes, various sized cracks, bark inclusions and odd shaped wood such as crooked roots and elbow shaped branches. Again you did a fantastic job on this bowl.

    Phil,
Beautiful bowl I love the flaws that nature gives us. These flaws give our projects character. Great job!!

Beautiful piece. Phil do you sand between each coat of sanding sealer & finish? If so what grit do you use. I admire all of your work.❤

One of your video you did back min 2019 you made a comment you weren't an artist. This video shows you truly are one SIR

Another beautiful piece. The grain is just lovely, not replicated outside of nature. Also, I couldn't help but notice the injury to your left hand above the thumb. All okay? We just care, don't want to help it.

Old men that take an aspirin every day tend to bruise easily, Tom. No biggie, no pain, it's all good! 😊

I can't have enough watching seasoned turners like you digging into wood and come up with a Mother Nature's wonder. By the way, I noticed your 5/8 bowl gouge was getting shorter close to the end of the video and was afraid that Acacia was so hard that you had to sharpen it hundred of times. Just kidding! Thank you for sharing.

Haha, well, you might have noticed that! Actually, I was switching between a newer and older 5/8" gouge so I wouldn't have to stop to sharpen so often and when I did, I sharpened both. They are exactly the same except the five year old one is about 2" shorter than the newer one. 😊
