I'm a collector of "ancient science fiction" and Murray Leinster was in the forties, the "Dean of Science fiction" because he was writing science fiction before the magazines were begun. There was another "Dean of Science Fiction", Jack Williamson. He started publishing in the early Amazing Stories in 1928 and his last books were published in the 2000's, making him the only writer to have published in 8 decades. Thank you for mentioning Clifford D. Simak, he is my favorite SF author. City is good, but his masterpiece, in my opinion, is Way Station. But most of his novels were some of the best SF for the time. You will enjoy both of these writers, I guarantee!
I love seeing older book covers! It really feels like a time capsule. Cover design has evolved so much but there's something charming about the older covers...
Some solid books here, Michael! The Mars books are quite fun, and I enjoy the Old Mars/Old Venus books that a number of writers produced. I have a Clifford Simak book in a science fiction anthology, but I believe it’s Way Station. I’ll probably be getting into it later this year. Hope you’re having a great start this week. Best, Jack
Murray Leinster (William Fitzgerald Jenkins) was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1956 for "Exploration Team." He was also awarded a retroactive Hugo in 1996 for Best Novelette for "First Contact."
The real future is lame for sure, haha. Burroughs is fantastic, and I really want to find that Kline book, "Jan of the Jungle." It sounds hilarious. I am building up quite the collection of science fiction paperbacks from the golden age. They had the best cover art in those days--but still don't have one of those double novels. I will have to be on the look out.
I know Murray Leinster only from his short story First Contact in the volume Science Fiction Hall of Fame (1970). Gardner Fox I know of course from all the comic books I bought in the 1960’s. I read a few Clifford D. Simak novels (The Goblin Reservation being my first) and have a few more on my shelves to read, but I don’t have City. I ordered it once from Amazon, but the pages got bent and twisted before the shrink-wrap went on, so I had to return it. I’ve got to try to get that book again.
City is such a good book. I hope you get a chance to read it. Murray Leinster is one of those guys who seems to have just vanished. I did find that a bunch of his stuff is available as cheap ebooks, so perhaps he still has some readers. I hope so. Thanks for watching and for your continued support!
O the memories! I was scarred for life by Rod Serling. Unlimited books and broken glasses ... the horror. Frazetta! The old covers reminded me weirdly of the movie The Killer Shrews. Strap fur on a dachshund hey presto a killer shrew. Shouldn’t the resident alien have made an appearance? Deb
Thank you for the video. I remembered some of the names, but it seems I've never read one of those books. I should remedy that. Looking forword for your next videos.
Ah, I watched Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and The Jetsons. Have to check out some of these authors. Learn so much from your channel.
Have you read The Twilight Man: Rod Serling and the Birth of Television by Koren Shadmi? It’s a biography in graphic novel form. It’s fantastic! Geez, I’ve read Simak’s The Way Station (excellent!) but only one of the 12 volumes of short stories I own… really hope the random generator picks another one soon! I would frame every one of those old science fiction books. Droool…
This next video is going to be classic fantasy so Gemmell is a bit late. I am going to be reading his stuff this year though. Have not read his work since the 90s! Should I start with Legend?
He's my favorite writer in any genre so.....I'd start anywhere. LoL. Maybe start with a self contained book, and wait for the series books after. Like maybe MorningStar ,or Echoes of the Great Song.
Also if you care on my Channel I have an Instrumental called The Dance of Night & Day inspired by one of his books the Swords of Night & Day from the Drenai Saga. It is my first video I posted so the oldest, and not great quality. Done on a Acoustic and recorded by my phone. No editing. I am going 2 rerecord it soon.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Although I talk overwhelmingly about comics, I have a similar reading background as yourself when it comes to SF and Horror, and perhaps a bunch of other stuff. Leinster: What, no mention of Four From Planet 5, Monster From Earth's End (basis for the lame movie), War With the Gizmos? He was also Will F. Jenkins, the writer of many westerns, maybe a few mysteries and such. Don't know Richard Wilson. Mack Reynolds I see a lot - did anyone ever read his stuff? Adelbert Kline seemed a bit tedious when I tried Port of Peril. Great covers. Jan Brady is preferred. I have the Gulliver. 2 copies because i forget what I own and it's Frazetta. Haven't gotten to it yet. Loved Almuric. I don't think Howard actually wrote it, doesn't feel right, but maybe. Seems superior to Kline who some say wrote it. Simak is one of the greatest. City, Way Station, and lots of wonderful short stories. Atlantic Abomination was a decent minor SF horror. I have heard of all except Wilson, but I am an old fart who has started reading again. So I know of the old stuff. Don't miss Simak. You won't be disappointed. Another cool video. Thanks Michael.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I think Jenkins was his real name. He wrote Outlaw Deputy, Outlaw Guns, Texas Gunslinger, and others. I have a western movie tie-in named Dallas with Gary Cooper and Ruth Roman on the cover.

A classic video! I did manage to get that same edition of City. I love that dog, that trippy, spaced out little guy.

That dog cover is pretty great!

I need to do an Outer Limits Marathon. That show was great!
