minimalism might not be the answer

  • In a q&a style, I want to answer some questions regarding minimalism, friendships, sustainability, and mental health and talk about the question of why we follow a certain lifestyle and if minimalism itself is going to make our lives better or if it is just a small part in a longer journey.

I may not be a minimalist but I do believe that you should only have something you want and not consume unnecessarily.

Minimalism has been a blessing for me to encounter. For a while I was extreme. Decluttered to the point I owned almost nothing. I think I was watching too much minimalist content on UA-cam. I have since found a balance. I’m more intentional with my belongings and have adopted some of the principles of minimalism without feeling bad about having more than 5 t shirts. Overall I’m glad to be aware of the concepts.

I am not a minimalist, but I am very attracted to it because of this exact point of view. I think people lose sight of these values and then blame minimalism for unhealthy behavior and thought processes. I think the same thing happens with other practices that are really great, like sustainability, but the internal pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect can ruin the whole mission we originally began with. I honestly really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this, as well as seeing your reality as an imperfect human too. We are all in this together! 💖

This is actually a great video! I was thinking that I don’t know anyone in “person/real life” that is a minimalist, and I often have these questions for myself or I wonder about these things, so is great to hear you talk about it. That’s something I really like about your channel, that you dwell on very specific topics that might not seem relevant but they actually are because we do think about those things.

Less stuff, more meaning, more joy. Isn’t that the point? Your questions of “What helps, what hinders and what is irrelevant?” Those are the core questions for the minimalist. It’s being intentional and conscious about the things we own and the things that we own that don’t serve us.

Lia, I always appreciate hearing your inner thoughts and the way you are so candid / authentic with the way you speak them. As a lifelong open-minded learner and contemplative thinker, you have so much good to say and give to the world! ❤ Your perspective as a social worker paired with your humanistic, ecological perspective as an overall thoughtful, compassionate individual, is always so refreshing, comforting, and relatable. I appreciate you and always look forward to your videos! 🤗❤

Thank you, Lia, I'll watch that again tomorrow, there are many good points! I think there are many reasons for minimalism and most are not mental issue related, but there are practical, financial, religious reasons, or just a sense of responsibility for the planet and the future generations.

I also feel a bit isolated and have some difficulty making new friends as an adult. I consider my two closest friends to be my first friends from my childhood and they're in another country. I have a husband and two kids who are young adults and I also have some colleagues that I'm friendly with but they are not very deep friendships but more on a superficial level. Most of my family are also in another country. Sometimes I just feel like giving up trying to make friends, I find it so much easier to have a relationship with my cats.

Maybe you have already talked about it but have you considered an ebook reader instead of "real books"? What is your take on it?

I actually have an ebook reader! And my library also has a lot of ebooks. But right now my boyfriend is using it 😊 I love to have the option but I also love looking through physical books at the library so let's see how it develops 😊

Perhaps it's about cultivating (healthy) drive without succumbing to desire, the later being that which the world around us attempts to foster in us at any and all possible moments?

Lia, do you ever consider "canning" your surplus fruit, it might be an answer in circumstances like this? I love listening to you talking sort of randomly. My youngest daughter has decided I am a hoarder, which I don't think I am, I have the assorted "stuff" of a marriage and 5 kids which my Ex (and I suppose the kids) left me with. This overload of belongings causes me to be sort of paralysed by indecision. Anyway, I enjoyed the videa, thank you

Thank you for the insights and questions. Recently I have had a feeling that I want to declutter everything, but it seems I am not just fulfilled with my life. So now I want to incorporate more balanced way of living a sustainable and more happy life. Also can I ask if someone knows UA-camrs about the minimalism and sustainable life in German? I am learning it now and need some recommendations.
