  • The stunning realization that "a building is like a flower" is revolutionizing the green building and sustainability movement world-wide.
    Considered one of the most influential individuals in the green building movement today. McLennan is the recipient of the prestigious Buckminster Fuller Prize, as well as CEO of the International Living Future Institute, a leading NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) that focuses on the transformation to a world that is socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative. He is also CEO of Cascadia Green Building Counsel. McLennan is the founder and creator of the Living Building Challenge, widely considered the world’s most progressive and stringent green building program. His vision and published works have made a pivotal impact on the shape and direction of green building in the United States and Canada.

    It is not "hard to do" it just takes a commitment at the very beginning and getting the entire team on board, then magic happens. It becomes an incredibly rewarding experience for building in our world because you know it is helping the much needed transformation to living in harmony with nature and leaving a living legacy for future generations.

      +Susan Rainier Yea its not that hard. As an engineering student me and my team composed of architects and engineers from various fields did conceive a building like this in our final university project.It was a lab building for a research station with cafeteria and dorm rooms.
      Of course we didn't meet all the requirements of LBC but we had net zero energy (using a passive building), all natural materials know to be clean and not harmful and rainwater recuperation and recycling. On paper everything was working great. We simply used the 3 R tactic for every aspects. Reduce-Recycle-Renewable(sources).
      We estimated that the building would have cost 30-35% more than a regular one with same sq ft. Its not that much considering you practically get no bills. You get back in your investment after less than 10 years which is not that much considering a useful life of 50-100 years... Promoters need to wake up and start building green now. Its possible you just need the will a bit more investment at start.

    Now let's make it affordable for the average first time home builder to incorporate so all new buildings can employ these processes. It would seem that these technologies and levels of expertise would come at a high cost for now. Make it profitable for the average person and the average business owner and it will spread like wildfire.

      Yes, let's! Would love to hear some people's suggestions for how specific costs could come down -- what sector/product/materials, and active solutions. We're made up of a team of everyday citizens who are pursuing the Living Building Challenge on a residential home in Los Angeles. It was built in 1947. Always eager to bounce ideas around with others who are passionate about improving our cities.

      The solar energy and battery systems will be expensive for years to come, but efficient building standards are affordable and have been known for years. Insulation, sun orientation & shading, and natural building materials are already out there.

    Hi, I'm a jobless nobody with a highschool diploma and I don't really know what to do next but I do know that I want to be the kind of person that designs things like this. I love the idea of orchestratic something organic and using biomimicry principles, coming up with ways to be cleaner and more efficient. Small scale, large scale, using it all to better the lives of everyone.
    Anyone know what the first step is? You'd change my life, quite literally.

    • @shreyasmore7119
      @shreyasmore7119 3 роки тому +2

      You've already taken the first step. 😊 I don't know which country you belong to so I can't suggest or recommend anything specific. Perhaps look up at local sustainable/climate conscious/environment aligned companies, NGOS, and institutions and understand the spectrum of career opportunities available. Dive really deep to understand this and you will find your next step in the process. Good luck
      :))

      Attend architecture talks at a local university, consider a short course in architectural design to understand the key principles of building design, start entering architectural design competitions (i.e. Evolo), use YT as an educational tool to learn the skills required to work in an architect's office (i.e. AutoCAD)

    A greenhouse that grows plants is a perfect place to have composting toilets, so the visitors actually contribute to supplying fertilizer for the plants. This seems natural and appropriate, not something that should be strange and awkward.
